Pillows, accessories - clueless

I mentioned that my sofa needs more pillows - not so many that no one can sit down, but enough to be comfortable (the back is pretty firm) and to look inviting.

It's a short sofa, really only seats two, so at the minimum it needs a pair of pillows for the back. Color? Pattern? More than two?

I've also mentioned before that I am clueless about accessories in general, so all suggestions are welcome.

Here are the sofa, and the fireplace end of the room with the sofa on the right.

Clueless?!?! I think NOT! I love what you have done. What a great room with MCM charm and warmth, and a hint of funky with the leopard print chair cushion.

I would use a couple of square ones in a deep neutral and one round one with a pop of color.

I'm wondering how a retro-look "atomic" barkcloth pillow or two would look on your sofa? Maybe too much competition with the painting over the sofa, but then again ... maybe not?

Here's perhaps a better link. I've bought from this seller before and was very please with the design and quality of the pillows.

I like the one that you have currently. Your room is nice and neutral - is there a color that you would like to add in your accessories in both pillows and perhaps a bowl or vase etc?

hint of funky with the leopard print chair cushion

You can't tell in the photo, but it's not leopard print - it's a botanical print of leaves and berries (with an overlay of cat hair) that is totally unsuitable to the style. The cushion is also too thick and too soft, so it's on the list to be replaced, only I don't know with what.

AAMOF, I have Pat-Pend on my list of favorites at ebay, but haven't purchased anything.

is there a color that you would like to add in your accessories in both pillows and perhaps a bowl or vase etc?

Aside from blue, of which there already is some, and grey, to complement the bluestone of the fireplace, I think that some brighter warm colors are needed. The chair that is barely visible in the foreground on the left has a red cushion (original), and I am inordinately pleased with the orange lamp, slightly visible on the left, that I just added. The lamp is new, not vintage.

That lamp is stunning. Well it's clear then you need to add some orange and/or red pillows. LOL about the cat fur, sometimes it's best to pick something that matches them so it just blends in.

I'm so glad that AuntJen posted about this ebay seller - I love those pillows. Alexander Girard made gorgeous mid-century designs, love 'em. Thanks

Great lamp! I vote for orange and blue pillows to pull together the colors in your wall hanging and lamp.

Lots of great things in your room!

I wonder, have you tried the blue art piece above the fireplace instead? Looking at the fireplace wall, most everything you have there is small, and almost all of it is on the bottom half of the wall. I would like to see a piece above the fireplace with more visual impact, so I am wondering about the blue art?

Then move the grouping of three pieces to above the couch. Add a blue and grey toned vase on one bookcase, perhaps with some stems of light manzanita or pussy willows and grasses. Perhaps a plate or platter on a stand on the other bookcase, with a pair of interesting candlesticks done in pottery or metal (perhaps a pewter to pick up the grey tones of the fireplace, but no wood), with dark blue pillar candles in them.

The little votive candles on the mantel are lost. I would at least group them together more closely, or move them to another spot. I think with the right piece of art there, you really don't need anything on the mantel. I would like to see that white trim painted out to either a grey tone as the stone, or black. The white looks kind of out of place there.

As for the couch, I would like to see solid color pillows or simple stripes on there, with blue. I think that would be in keeping with the more modern feel that the couch has.

I would also consider, if the lamps aren't valuable, doing a pewter or hammered silver paint finish on them, and then darker shades.

I think that the camera perspective is misleading: the proportions of the wall above the fireplace are more pleasing in real life than in the photo. The votives are actually in large double old-fashioned glasses with an etched design, and while they are not effective in the photo, where the glass is further washed out by the flash, they work better when they're lighted. I will try to get a photo with the candles (battery) turned on and no flash.

I moved the oval aluminum tray from the coffee table to the left bookcase, replacing the glass plate (which was not effective against a dark background) and like the effect. I have a fair amount of 50s-60s hammered aluminum and would like to use more, but most of it is large trays. There's a bread dish that could possibly go on the coffee table, with something (what?) in it.

I'm trying a pair of pewter candlesticks on the bookcase. They look OK with the aluminum tray, but they're not tall and they're for tapers. Furthermore, the tapers that I have on hand are dark blue, and something brighter would be better.

I looked at all the pillows pat.pend.pillows is offering, and emailed about one where I might want a pair but the listing was just for one - received a reply within minutes that more were available and the listing was being updated.

My thought about this is to choose colors and patterns that coordinate with the sofa and complement the art and the stone, but which don't provide a startling contrast that would compete with the other elements. For the back of the sofa I have in mind two pillows in a stripe by Alexander Girard that is predominantly shades of tan but introduces the grey that I want:

Then possibly this one by Hella Jongerius, which includes some coral, for the other end:

It should be obvious that my taste is conservative - in general I prefer even accent pieces to be somewhat subfusc. I always remember the time one of my aunts decided that her living room, which was painted hot pink, needed more color, so she bought green lampshades.

I'd put the orange lamp next to the sofa, lower the blue painting about 6 inches, and find a fabric that has both colors in it or maybe one of each color with a texture (raw silk, heavy cotton with a hand-woven look, knitted but not crafty). Hammered aluminum sounds great.
