Also looking for some dark, charcoal basalt or slate for the zen bathroom floor. Any suggestions for a dark natural stone but not uneven like slate? Should look earthy but not like patio stone...

soapstone would be nice as well as some of the ann sacks. I will get samples from all and see how they look in the space. I feel that black natural stone is very hard to do right. Dont want it to look like a public restroom :)

It must be some marketing gimmick because the Japanese don't live that way. I spent some time in Tokyo and most homes & apartments (except some new highrises) are very claustrophobic and even when they have extra windows or the rare view, 90% of residents keep all the shades/curtains closed most of the time. Most of the residential building are drab and ugly. New construction can be more "interesting" but usually done to maximize space, so it still ends up being ugly.
