Clip rings - again!

OK, this is *my* first post about clips rings. First of all, should I use them with 95" panels (96" ceiling) in my LR, with these Romans? Or should I use valances to hide the trim and top edge of the inside-mount shades (and the flat piece of wood in the middle of the double window)?

I'd *love* to get a flat screen to hang on the wall b/t the windows, with the matching coffee table underneath for components (baskets on the floor under table for DVDs?). I was thinking of just putting one panel on each of these windows and pulling them to the sides away from the TV. That way I could use the other 2 panels to give more fullness to the double window.

Second, if the vote is for clip rings instead of valances (panels aren't pinch pleat, aren't lined), which color should I use with these rods? Silver (brighter, matches the rods better) or Antique Pewter (which matches the HW on the end tables)? It may be hard to tell in these pics, but the silver ring is closer to the end of the rod.

The sofa is kind of contemporary/transitional, the tables could be either - sort of A&C, but the house is more traditional farmhouse Colonial (I think you've all seen my front porch - won't post another pic). My cousin calls it "generic" so I can decorate any way I want LOL!

Thanks

I must have been hiding under a rock because I have never seen those things before!!
They look rather like a roach clip to me....no I wouldn't use them!

    LOL lindac

ajsmama, this must be a different room than the room off your kitchen?? I love your sofa and end tables. If your ceiling is 96" and the panels are 95" plus the length of the clip ring, then they are going to touch the carpet? Is that the look you are going for? The color of the clips you have in the pic looks good with the rod. I would rather panels than valances since this is your "fancier" room. Is that the only spot for the TV in this room. I would rather panels on both sides of both windows but not if the TV is staying there.

I got them from JCP. Where do other people find them? What do they look like? I suppose I could take the clip off and just sew the ring on. Or should I just put the panels on a standard ivory rod and hide it with the birdcage rod and valance on top?

ctlane - I have both color rings on the rod - look at the 2nd pic, I think it shows the color difference (they do look the same in the 1st pic).

Yes, this is our "formal" LR with the French doors, but it *is* the only place for the TV (we do have connections in MBR and in study but that's DH's room, I just had it wired for cable in case he ever wanted to put TV there for a "man cave" but he works from home right now so no TV there - and esp. no kids). It was supposed to be more of an adult room (future MBR?) but DD spends more time there than anyone.

I could hem the panels - just didn't want to order 84" and have them be too short.

Use the rings that match the rods.

The ring closer to the end seems a good match. I think you are going to have to decide where you want your rod placed and then hem them. Maybe not use the valance.

OK, no valance (will the top of the romans be OK showing?). How high (allow for possible future crown molding?)? Sew on or clip on? Note - I've had these curtains for a year and a half, *finally* got the woodwork done and the shades up, sewing may delay things even more LOL!

    LOL @ lindac!

How about placing the rod half way between the top of the window trim and the bottom of the new crown.

If you could sew the rings between the 2 layers of fabric, it would be a nicer, more custom look and it would hide the loop.

Look on Thrifty chick decor blog, she has a neat way to hide the clip.

Thanks bonniee! Thrifty Chick just clips them on the back rather than the top, no sewing required! I'm going to try that (can always take them down and hem them if they're still too long, but I do want them almost touching the floor).

Now, how far out to the sides? The oak furniture in the corner is not staying. The room is 13 ft wide, the double window stool is 82.5" so I have 37" on one side, 37.5" on the other. The left hand single window is 21" from the corner, those windows are 42" wide (edges of stool - casing is slightly less). The smaller rods I have say 28" -48" but I believe that doesn't include the finials. BTW, there is an outlet in the corner, the edge of the plate is 5" away from the left hand window stool - I don't know whether I should cover it with drapes. I *could* just put the shorter rods up the widest they go, but should they be centered over the window if I'm only putting 1 panel on the side?

Should the long rod be the same distance from the sides of the large window as the rods are on the smaller windows, or would you go wider on the wider window with more wall space to side of window (so maybe in the corner where the rods meet, the ends are the same distance from the corner of the room?)? I have a rod that goes up to 120" for the large window. I'm not sure if people look mainly at the window (guess they can't tell how wide it is if panel covering edges), but I think they might zoom in on that corner as soon as they walk in the room since the French doors are directly opposite that corner (door frame is only a few inches from corner directly across from the one where the windows meet).

    Thanks!

Uh oh, I found this image - maybe it just works b/c the scarf valance matches the shades, but I noticed the top of the shade lines up the the top of the drapes. DH is going to kill me (after putting holes in the woodwork to inside mount the romans!) but should we mount the romans above the windows? Only thing is, they're not wide enough - bought the (stock) size that fit inside the jambs! Since I have 2 shades on the large window, does it matter anyway? Just leave them as is?

    Thanks again.

This one has inside mount shade, they put the rod on the trim so that the top of the drapes lined up with the shade. Think I should try that (maybe not putting the rod on the trim - depends on how big a ring I use - could return these for bigger rings so drapes hang lower - trim is 2.5")?

    http://www.levolor.com/images/gallery/full/62.jpg

Here they're hung higher - does it just work b/c of the strong wall color (which I guess I have too)?

    http://www.levolor.com/images/gallery/full/275.jpg

    http://www.levolor.com/images/gallery/full/281.jpg

These are hung (with some room b/t the ring and top of drape) so that the drape top lines up with the top of the trim, even though the shades are inside mount - could that work too?

    http://www.levolor.com/images/gallery/full/229.jpg

Of course these don't line up with anything, and the center bracket shows (which would be my case too if I didn't use a valance).

    http://www.levolor.com/images/gallery/full/255.jpg

Oh, the more I look at images the more confused I get but I'm convinced that my inside-mount romans, thin rods, and unlined unpleated drapes are bad choices! Please help!

Roger on 'Sell This House' always uses the clip rings...in conjunction with white bed sheets! I'm not sure what you mean by Thrifty Chick clipping them on the back instead of the top but will take your word for it. Good luck on your project, sorry I have no advice for you I am helpless when it comes to window coverings.

Since your roman shades are mounted inside the windows and with such a perfect fit and no rod or header that shows, they look like they are part of the windows, not part of the drapery/panels that will dress the windows. Therefore, I don't think they need to be considered at all when deciding on where/how to mount the window panels. If you use rings, I would simply make sure the top of the panels are even with the top of the windows or higher. That way the space you see between the rod and the top of the panels is the wall, or hang them without the rings showing.

Sorry I can't help with your other questions. BTW, I absolutely love your roman shades. Can you tell me where I could find them...they look exactly like what I want for one particular window. I like that they don't look at all bulky when pulled up.

Thanks for the kind words - now I know why I never hung drapes or pictures in my old house until we were ready to sell!

Sharon - I got those shades on sale for $10 ea (normally $20) at Ocean State Job Lot! I know, put the cheapest shades in the fanciest (except for DR) room LOL! But they were the color/pattern I wanted, I meant to switch the fabric out with my JCP double romans in the FR so I would have the doubles (sheers behind) on all the front windows, but since I couldn't find cordless HW for the FR we just hung them all the way they originally came. They are flimsy (no lining, and you can see the rods inside bend - they're just plastic, not metal).

The JCP blinds are bulkier b/c of the two layers and I don't like dealing with the 2 cords, at least not in the FR with the patio door. But they do sell single shades - you might try a stock size and return it if you don't like the way they hang. Are your windows a standard size?

These are the made-to-measure JCP shades in the FR (I hung knobs on the walls to use as cord cleats but with 2 cords on each shade that's a bit bulky too wound around the knob)

Here is the double window next to the slider with the sheers down

Here are more JCP double shades in stock sizes in DR (sorry, hadn't got trim up yet in this pic)

and MBR (they're a bit long, I haven't shortened them yet)

    HTH

And if anyone has ideas about how far out to the sides to put the rods (esp. in that corner b/t the windows) I'd appreciate it!
