granite in, (help) backsplash?

Here is my progress-- the granite went in last week (and sink and faucet). The first picture is really more accurate color wise, I will try to get more with the recharged camera(the photos were seconds apart so I cannot understand why the later ones are so dark and dismal. I am not a camera person though obviously). I guess I need to learn some tips on photographing the kitchen.

This shows my changes- I am pleased with the island overhang shape and the little changes such as the glass cabinet, the pendant lights etc.

I am looking at the tumbled marble botticino in the lighter 4" - looking for light and simple.

Feel free to give me feedback and suggestions. I am likely NOT changing the appliances (though who knows, so I do want whatever to work well with the white which is also the floor color )

And I meant to add, that what looks like a 3" white backsplash is just the outline of the removed old one so the walls are just waiting for paint and tile..
And the granite is sapphire blue.

Guess I will be a hog here, and now post the pix of what I am thinking of for the backsplash. Basically it is a light tile (and then I put some "friends" that I might or might not intersperse for variety)... and then there is a the stronger color. In the second photo I have them alternating. What do you think? (also the mosaic thing is the color of the light one, but I don't want to use the smaller tile except maybe in a decoration).
What do you think? Does either go better or not at all? Would you use both? Am I on the right track or am I just delusional?

    (((help!?) here is both?

    Sheila,

Our granites look the same (Peacock Green)and I have a tumbled marble backsplash that looks similar to the ones you are considering. I posted a picture so you can see how they look together. My tiles are called Dark Andino. We also have the same drawer pulls, but I have darker cabinets. Hope this helps! Susan

Susan~ Needless to say, I think your kitchen is lovely! you know how they say great minds think alike or similarly anyways.. so do you think the color tiles I am showing work? I think this minute I prefer the light one but I do like them both and would be very happy to decide so I could order to get it done... these were at lowe's and home depot.
I am so insecure and have nobody to share this with so I am truly appreciative to this forum.

    Sheila,
I completely understand about the insecurity. After all, how many people do their kitchens more than once or twice in a lifetime? Its not like we can say, "I'll do this for now, and next time I'll do..."!

Its difficult to tell from the pictures which tile would be best. They are all neutral so none can be wrong, however, be careful about not clashing with the light cabinets. Any of the tiles will work with the granite. Since my cabinets and granite are both dark, any lighter tile worked for me.

As far as the inserts, all the glass ones look beautiful. I personally did not want an eye catching or busy backsplash, especially since the tumbled marble tiles have a lot of variance. I do like the brown glass tiles, though.
(See I can't even make up my mind about someone elses kitchen!) Good Luck, and let us know what you choose. Susan

    Hi Sheila,
The granite, cabinets and pulls look fantastic! I think the backsplash tile is too close to the color of the cabinets. i suggest search the Finished Kitchen's blog for pix with cabinets your color and see which tone of backsplash looks like more of a contrast. I really like the blue/green accent tile better than the dark brown/maroon looking one.

To repeat, I so value the comments and suggestions here. I think both Susan and sue are telling me that the color of the backsplash tiles is a problem which is scary to me as I thought the lighter one looked good, the darker one had warmth but I thought that one possibly classed with the cabinets... I have looked through the finished kitchens blog and am stumped. To be totally honest, the dark counters, which I do think look very good in the room, are not really what I wanted but I do like them (my vision was just a lighter airy version which is kind of what I had before)... so I really don't want to go too dark. I know between the light cabinets, the whitish floor, and the dark countertops, I have some balancing to do. Do you think I would be better off with a plain offwhite tile (either matte or gloss) ?
Confused, needing help and lots of clues~~

    went missing?
So I looked through some more images and I just don't know. I thought it looked good.
    What would you suggest?(besides therapy)

i think that the best pairing for grabite is crackle tile myself because the crackles mimic the granite...

it would be interesting to see what a green crackle tile would look like with your granite.

    Sheila,

I like the colour of the bottom left 2" (?) tile that has the four decorative tiles sitting on top of it.

I also like the bluish glass tile best if you were going to have any contrasting inserts.

Someone here (sorry I've forgotten her name), really helped me out by doing a mock-up of my two final choices (maybe you remember that?) Even though my present granite (which is pretty similar to yours) is being replaced, I actually think the tile I chose will go with the new granite. Perhaps you can take pics of the tiles by themselves, and ask for some mock-up help? I wish I had kept a copy of the pic- dagnabbit! I just did a search and couldn't find it in the archives.

Thanks Raehelen. I think I will take some photos tomorrow. THe 2' tile you like (that is the whole sheet you mean right?)- is actually pretty similar to the lighter color of the 4" tiles I have leaning against the wall, and in real life they look good to me but they are more varied Ithe larger ones) so I don;t know. The 4" ones are also easily half the price of the smaller 2" ones. I honestly would prefer the larger tiles... Thanks for the feedback. I am going to call it a nite, but tomorrow mornign I will be posting better pix of the tiles I guess against the cabinets because it does seem they all work well with the granite.

Oh well, another bump maybe a day or 2 later will come some brainstorms? Still thinking that the lighter ones work. Has anyone done a mixture of 4" tile and the 2" ? Like for example having the bottom row of 4" horizontal, and then some sort of border and then the 2" on the diagonal?

This is a little OT (well, totally OT- sorry) but your dog doesn't wear the prong collar all the time, right? :)

muscat you are too sharp!! Actually she wears it more than you probably would want her to.

;) Well, just thought I'd ask....it *is* a little bit of a hazard.

    sheila,

The color of your cabinets looks so different in this post. They almost looked a little on the pink side in your other one. Which one is more accurate? If it's this one, then I'm really liking the travertine tiles with the smaller green (or is it blue) accent tiles.

I know I am coming in to this a little late BUT.... we have the sapphire blue countertop as well. I am doing almost exactly what you are doing. I have the travertine tiles in 1" (durango) and have 1" glass tiles in blue and brown. I really think they bring out he blue/gray color in the countertop. I think that it is hard for people to see the color in the counter in a picture. it is really something that you have to see in person. We are going to try and match up the floor tile to the brown in the counter. I think your ideas will look great but like i said i had the same ideas!!

This is funny about the color of the cabinets... I think this post is more true. The funny part is that we got recessed lights a few months ago and I decided to try the true white bulbs but only on 2 of the lights to experiment. The wood really looks different in different lighting, and while there might be a little pink, they are more tan which is also in the granite but isnt showing up so much in the pix.
In the other post, I mixed the 2 colors.
today I saw at Lowe's that they also have the travertine which is honed and filled, as well as porcelain tile that looks very much like the stone. It is my understanding that those would be preferable? Anybody have any comments on that?
Jlab, I woudl love to see a pic of yours- and thanks for the feedback!
