Help please with new layout idea

Hi GWers,

I posted a layout about a month ago and received some excellent advice from many of you. At first I couldn't see how I could make the changes since it included turning doors into windows, etc. but I went with it and came up with a new plan.

What do you think? (Sorry, I still can't figure out how to get the picture to show on the post.) I'm thinking it needs a prep sink somewhere (island?). I've also thought about swapping the main sink with the cooktop and putting the cooktop between the windows.

I don't think I'll have upper cabs on the window side. I put the DW and trash compactor on the island since they will not have cabinet panels and I can hide them better there. Not sure if that is the best place, however.

Is there too much counter space? (I'm sure once I figure out how much granite that will be I'll think so!)

My kitchen is torn out now and my cabinet guy is waiting on me so I need to come up with something fairly quickly. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Thanks.

You have lots of wonderful work space there, Camphappy. I'm not sure but think I probably would move the sink to the left of the refrigerator. The mess accumulating there would be farther from the table and to some degree blocked from view from the entry by the bulk of the refrigerator. That would also set the stove opposite the long side of the island, which is what I have and really like for maximizing the function of the island.

One think I am very sure of, though--you need to draw in your chairs to scale! They will be huge in real life compared to those little rectangles. I'm also pretty sure I'd pull the kitchen counters back to give more room to the dining area and those poor chairs. Devouring adjacent areas is a very common mistake in designing kitchens and wanting extra inches for this, and then that, and then the other. The other spaces really need the same greedy attention to their requirements and so often don't get it. Fortunately, you do have lots of lovely work space with that plan and can well afford to be generous to both.

I read what you said on your other post about feeling almost as if you could be out camping when you look out your living room windows. Nice!

I sure wouldn't want the dw across aisle from the sink. Lots of twisting and dripping, and inability to work the water and drain with that of the sink.

I'm not sure I see enough value to the counter to the right of the fridge to crowd the stove wall that much. I'd move the fridge to the right and get the cooktop out of the corner.

Your plan certainly could benefit from a prep sink. I would put it on the corner of the island closest the fridge, so accessible from stove end and baking side. That's the way we have ours and it works great.

If you can get the fridge out from behind the island, I'd move the island toward the cooktop run. I have 36" between island and cooktop and it's very efficient for turning from prep to stove and back. We have 48" where the dishwashers or oven open into an aisle, and it's pretty roomy for that, but doesn't seem necessary for the stove work space. I wouldn't have more than 42", and prefer, for what works here, the 36".

If you swap the sink and stove, a lot of things change. You no longer have the same access from stove to fridge and oven. When someone sets or clears the table, they have a long way from dishes to table, and vice-versa. Before dinner that would mean traffic through the cooking and baking areas. I'd leave it as is.

Thanks Angie for posting the layout.

Rosie, I liked the idea of moving the sink too but as Rhome stated I like it being closer to the table for cleanup purposes. Under the window is where it currently is so saves on plumbing too. I also was thinking of shortening the runs. The baking center run is against a wall I don't believe I can shorten, though. That wall is 12' tall and I think is significant to holding up the roof. The sink wall can easily be shortened but not sure if it would look off balance with the other side longer? We'll be replacing that slider on the sink run wall and may lengthen that to 7-8'.

Rhome, I completely forgot about the DW/sink hookup. Thanks for the reminder. I like your idea placement for the prep sink, being close to the baking center as well as cooktop. The little counter/cabinet space between pantry and refrig was going to be the office zone for mail, keys, phone, charging, etc. I thought if I kept the counter space small and limited it would limit the amount of "stuff" that would collect there (paper items seem to breed in my home).
Moving the refrig over to the right would keep it from opening into the island. I would just have to find my office space someplace else.
I was keeping the cooktop as far over toward the windows to keep the hood simpler. My ceilings angle up on that wall with the lowest point at the window side. The farther over I move the cooktop to the right, the higher my hood chimney needs to rise.
Thanks GW for helping me design a functional kitchen!
