We have a Zephyr Typhoon under-cabinet hood. I love the hood, but it is louder at high levels than I expected. Mind you, I don't think I'll ever need to turn it up more than mid way as the suction is amazing.

We visited the Zephyr Showroom in San Francisco and were amazed with the product line. They really know how to pack a lot of suction into small units.

I have the Zephyr Savona. It's very noisy even at the lowest speed. I only use it when I feel I absolutely have to.

We had a Zephyr Whirlwind in our last house and just bought a Cyclone, I think it was, for my in-laws' kitchen remodel. They are both undercabinet styles. I think the brand seems of nice quality and good performance.

I also meant to say they seem easy to clean. The Whirlwind was really quiet. It moves fewer CFMs, but the more powerful hoods in that line claim to be quieter. I think it can depend a lot on ducting direction and length?

We have a Zephyr Savona and are very pleased. The lowest setting sucks the smoke and steam up very well and I do not think it is noisy at all.

ptyles, thanks for that post. My Zephyr Savona just got delivered today and is now sitting in the garage, awaiting installation. Earlier post (natal) about it being noisy worried me. Maybe hers is defective?

As it is, I'm a little nervous because the electrician we have doesn't really know how to install it. I did download installation instructions for him to look at -- although I'm sure they're in the box with the hood, now that we have it.

I love the look at the Savona -- hope it works for me! (& is quiet -- DH is "allergic" to noise!)

I've been studying hoods for about a year in the search for mine. I looked at that one for a while last year. Zephyr is well-thought of in Appliances. The problem with it (if you can call it that) is that it only has a 6" duct. You'd get quieter with a hood with 8" or 10" ducting. I ruled this one out for this reason and because I wanted baffle filters which are reportedly easier to clean than mesh.

The cfms are a bit low if you'll be running a few burners and the grill at one time, but you say you don't cook like that. I think you'd be fine.

Like rhome mentioned, how the duct is run from the hood to the home's exterior has a lot to do with how noisy it is. A particular hood that vents straight up and out at my house would be quieter than the same model at your house where the ducting has to make one or even two turns before it reaches the exterior. Quietest is a large duct that vents straight up and out with no turns/bends.

I am glad to hear that most Zephyr owners are happy. I am sorry to hear Natal's is so noisy.

I did notice the Zephyr only has a 6" duct. We should have a fairly short, straight run to the outside. I am going to mount the chimney style hood 6' from the floor and run it straight up the wall and out the roof. Our vaulted ceiling is 11' tall where the hood will be placed, and there is no attic above that side of our single story house, so it should be a 5-6' straight run to get outside to the rooftop.

The hood choice is definitely a form vs. function debate for me. I love the look of this hood (and the current price) although I realize a pyramid-shaped hood would have a better capture area, and higher CFMs and bigger ducts would be better (although not necessarily essential for me). Baffle filters being easier to clean than mesh is something to consider. I would hope I can just stick the filters in the DW. I have never had a real hood (or cleaned filters), so this is all new to me.

Well, I'm hoping the Zephyr will work well for me & be quiet.

We also have a very short run, on an outside wall -- it could vent directly outside -- that's where the old OTR MW vent is.

The Zephyr Savona filters can be cleaned in the DW, I was happy to read in the manual, as long as you don't have high heat drying on. I have a Bosch DW, so no high heat drying, ever.

Something just occurred to me. Will the visual weight of that very slim hood be able to carry all that open drywall space above and around it? IIRC, the wall it would be on is very open and has tall ceilings. You might need the heft of something larger.

Breezygirl, my layout has changed a bit. I now plan to have the hood and range in the center, then a 3-4" gap between the hood and uppers, a 24" wide x 13" deep upper (probably frosted glass doors) on each side, then a 24" wide x 24" deep cabinet on each end that will house wall ovens and pantry pullouts. I fell in love with a picture on Houzz that shows a similar hood with a small gap between uppers and hood, as well as a glass tile backsplash I love (link below).

Cat_mom has a similar looking hood over a 36" Wolf range in a kitchen with vaulted ceiling, although she has no gaps next to the hood. I hope she doesn't mind me posting a picture of her lovely kitchen.

I have been a little nervous about a skinny chimney with a tall ceiling, but I really love that style of hood. I considered putting a "bridge" shelf with lights between the uppers at the tops of those cabinets and ending the hood into the shelf, but DH hated that idea.

Funny, I was thinking of Ca_mom's kitchen when I asked about your wall. Hers looks right because of the uppers on either side of the hood. Plus, the waterfall tile to the ceiling helps beef up the width. How wide is the duct cover for the Zephyr? The one on the Pando above looks bigger.

I didn't realize your layout changed. You've been working hard on that and on your appliances!

The duct cover for the Zephyr is 10.5" wide by 10.5" deep. Cat_mom's does look a bit beefier. I was thinking about doing the white oval glass tiles just under the cabinets and to the bottom of the hood, then having a light to medium blue paint behind the hood and above the cabinets.

I probably shouldn't rush the hood decision with several months to go before project completion. I just hate to pass up a deal, LOL. As of yesterday, I have purchased the fridge column, range, steam oven and undercounter wine fridge, which will soon be sitting in our garage. We don't even have bids from contractors yet (other than custom cabinets), but we have to do the kitchen now. DH likes that I have at least made some decisions and we are more locked into my last design now that appliances of a certain size have been ordered. I have fallen in love with slabs of white quartzite with blue veining, although I will not purchase those until we have a GC and counter sub hired so I can get pricing and they can verify my counters will fit on the 2 slabs.

I have been trying to schedule a meeting with the architect for the last few weeks so we can get revised drawings and move onto the bid phase. He seems to have lost some interest in the project since I didn't immediately accept his proposed layout of how our house should look.

I guess noise level can be relative. We do have a single bend in the duct work that goes up through the ceiling. The GC opted to use the old water heater route when we switched to tankless. Not sure how much the noise level is a result of that. I just find it irritating.

Are people here still find zephyr exhaust loud? Or have they gotten better?

I have one and it is reasonably loud on high speed, but the sones was rated fairly low and the pitch doesn't annoy me or anything. If it is moving lots of air, you are going to hear it to some degree. I use mine most of the time when I am at the range, cooking.
