Finalizing layout for modern kitchen

We are getting closer to finalizing the layout for the kitchen in our new house.

In the picture the distance from sink to cooktop is about 9'. The entrance to the kitchen by the peninsula is 42" and the dimensions inside the U is about 8' x 6'. The U will not have uppers as one wall is counter to ceiling windows and the rest are open to dining nook and the living room.

The cooktop wall will have be flanked by two tall cabinets (floor to ceiling) with full depth uppers connecting them. Kind of a cabinet wall with a cut out for the counter cooktop. See link.

My main concern right now is the placement of the fridge which is currently right outside the kitchen. We'd like to get a 42" or 48" fridge and placing it next to the cooktop would through off the symmetry on that wall.

The coffee bar might go away to give the 1/2 bath more room.

Input is welcome.

Here is a link that might be useful: cabinet wall

Someone with more experience may differ but my opinion is that passage is way too small for a peninsula with seating.
Would you consider turning the U so the wall of tall is joined to the window wall and getting rid of peninsula?

Also to consider: what if you did a 24" wide fridge only and kept a 24" wide freezer in the pantry area?

Big fan of the small appliance corner nook

Personally, I can't imagine having a cooktop 9' from the primary water source. That would be incredibly dysfunctional for both food preparation that requires water and situations where I find myself quickly needing to dump or douse a very hot pot into the sink.

I think I would put the cooktop inside the "U" and create a "wall of tall" on the wall that currently houses the cooktop that includes the large fridge.

I'm with controlfreakecs on this.

You would have to be yelling when ever you're going to pour out pasta water or walk over with a hot frypan to plate food, or whatever so that you don't run into someone who is coming into the kitchen. If the cooktop is 9' from the sink the fridge must be what?, 14 or 15' from the sink? So follow this - get some vegies from the fridge and walk to the sink, oh shoot forgot the lettuce, back to the fridge, take the unused vegies back, all the while walking through the entrance into the kitchen and across a traffic walk-way.

What about putting the sink in front of the windows and the cooktop where the sink currently is and then make a tallwall which would incorporate the fridge. The current layout will require a heck of a lot of walking and a caution light at the entrance into the kitchen.

Function should be paramount over form.

I too like the idea of moving the cooktop over to the U, and putting the fridge on the 'tall' wall.

My main sink is 9'5" across from my cooktop. I addressed this problem by having a prep sink to the left of my cooktop, so I have water for prep and I can dump hot water without having to walk across the room. You *could* do that along your current cooktop run, but I think it would make more sense to move the cooktop to the U.

Thanks for the comments and validating the things we have been struggling with.

Bringing the fridge into the tall wall and moving the cooktop are definitely things we have been thinking about. What makes moving the cooktop difficult for us is having a hood hanging down between the kitchen and the living room. The other option is in front of the large window and again we don't want a hood in front of the window.

Having a hard time coming up with something that works functionally and aesthetically.

Cooktop with hood in front of window can look pretty awesome with the right hood:

How big is that dining area? it looks really narrow to have peninsula seating and a walkway through it.

It is 6'x12' and the passage is 42".
