Need Help Deciding on Layout

Please help choose between the kitchen section of the following two layouts. What we are trying to decide between is the balance between "too open" and "not open enough". Notice that the first layout has a pantry wall on the lower right corner of the kitchen whereas the second layout leaves that area open.

Also, we don't think we are huge fans of the "peninsula", so we are trying to come to terms with it. Does it work in this layout?

THIS IS THE FIRST ONE (SCHEME 6):

THIS IS THE SECOND ONE (SCHEME 7):

I guess this doesn't technically address your specific question, so feel free to ignore, but I don't like how either plan seems to form a chute for traffic right past the range, where the cook will be crossing the aisle with prep items and hot pots. I also worry a lot about how I see stools on the range side of the island in the 2nd plan. That's not a good place for people to be in the way. Is there a reason to have stools at the island and the peninsula?

If you don't like the peninsula, do you have an idea of what you might like better? I can't tell without spending some time and having dimensions, but could you do more of a galley, having the window wall be a straight line, then a longer island, and having a full wall of tall cabinets on the wall where traffic walks through from family to dining room?

I'm trying to get a sense of what that pantry wall does or doesn't do for closing the kitchen in. It seems to only block the view to and from the courtyard. Is that something you want to see from the peninsula and/or kitchen? Is it undesirable at all to be able to see into the kitchen from the courtyard? How do you feel about your amount of storage? It looks like a really large kitchen. With that much room, it's shame not to have a good pantry. (my personal preference anyway)

As I said...Lots of comments, but not sure whether you'll find any helpful or not.

    Best wishes with your project.

I don't like the pantry cabinet in option #1. If you flipped the frig and range, you could do like rhome suggests and create a floor to ceiling pantry wall that includes the frig. This would make it easy for anyone just looking for a snack to stay out of the main cook's way. I also was wondering about the duplication of barstools at the island and penninsula.

Thanks for the feedback- we feel the same about the cooktop placement but keep getting some push back from our architect. We wanted to move the cooktop where the frig is but the wall length is only a little over 7 feet. They felt that was too short a wall for the cooktop given the overall size of the kitchen- 15x20. Thoughts? My other thought was to put it on the wall where the sink is now and have large windows on either side of it. I could then move the sink maybe to a pass through between the kitchen and the dinning area.
The courtyard is beautiful, that is why we wanted to move that pantry wall. Just did not know if this was too open to the family room? The designer felt there should be an "end "to the kitchen.

As for the stools-totally agree that there are too many. I was having trouble giving my stools up on my island as I have always wanted them. Would it be strange to have two stool at the island and 3 at the peninsula? The space between the island and the counters is 4 feet.

Thank you so much for the feedback- makes us think we are not crazy.

Very much loving the idea of the range on the outside wall with flanking windows. It would get it out of the traffic. The dining room wall is OK for the sink, but then where could you fit the fridge and still get to it easily from the range?

Would it be strange to put it across the island where the cooktop was? Or I could get rid of the peninsula and make that a shortish wall for the refrig. Then I could have my stools on the island. I think the kitchen would still be open enough to the family room?

I'm not sure of the length but couldn't you put the sink and DW in the peninsula? Leave the frig on the DR wall and make the wall where you originally had the cooktop a floor to ceiling pantry hutch dish storage type setup.

put the range on the wall where the peninsula "was" before we killed it. Make your island a bit longer, pantries or baking area where range was?

I think your ideas or bmorepanic's can work, and I think remodelfla's are the same as what I'd suggested, so you have a few things to consider that should be better than the designs above. Try them out and see what looks good to you...Or post all 3 and see if we can find the pluses and minuses.
