Microwave over Sink?

While brainstorming about putting a range hood or a microhood over the stove, my boyfriend came up with the idea to put a microhood over the sink. In our kitchen, there's a raised cabinet above the sink (like the one that hovers over the fridge), leaving nothing but a big blank wall spot behind the sink.

We have power there, the light under the microwave would be useful and it's a convenient place to put it. Is this beyond weird?

Well, have you thought about the fact that the microhood will protrude a bit from your adjacent cabinets? Therefore might be harder to see what you are doing while washing dishes? This being said, I myself went for a standard cabinet over the sink, so it is a matter of taste, if you can live with it, then no worries.

About the fact that the microhood might look strange above the sink... Frankly, the fact that there is a microwave above the sink isn't strange, it's the microhood version that makes it strange: what will you be venting?
However, if you like that idea, why don't you get a microwave wall cabinet and just put a standard microwave in it. (it's basically, a cabinet with a shelf in it for the microwave to go in. You can then have a puck ligh installed right under that shelf for light under your sink.

I don't know--I totally understand cabinet above sink, but wouldn't you generally want whatever is there to be a bit higher than normal to give you some working room? I wouldn't like a microwave that high, unless you are all very tall in your house.

Height factor would be my concern. If you put the micro high enough not to bonk your head on it while using the sink, how easy would it be to take a bowl of hot liquid out of the microwave? I would think that the micro would have to be at least 6' up and that's awfully high for cooking anything other than microwave popcorn.
    Just some thoughts......

The thought is a good one. I'm not sure that I'd do the microvent tho....like a pp said, maybe just put in a microwave cabinet...or maybe just a nice cabinet style shelf and then put a light under that. As far as how high it would need to be and everything, if you already have that space there above the sink, get a cardboard box that is the size of the microwave area and attach it to the wall above your sink and see how if feels to wash dishes and such with it there. It won't hurt if you bonk your head on it either! ;)

    it's almost certainly against code.

I wouldn't like to have two work zones overlap that way...doing dishes or working at the sink and someone using the microwave would be a pain.

Ummmm.....anyone else see a problem with an electrical appliance directly over a water source...much lower than a light would be?

    Maybe I'm over cautious...

Agree with what's been said above. I wouldn't want these two functions which seem to be at cross purposes overlapping. Plus the electric/water combination probably IS against code and certainly not a great idea.
