Current kitchen dreamboard pic

Well, as requested, here is my current kitchen dreamboard. Come a long way from red cabs and chickens like I said in another thread. Flooring is marmoleum (currently with green diamond insets). Ceiling will be knotty pine tongue and groove. The pic showing the stained glass: one of the big ones will be incorporated into the window over the sink... flanked by either awning or double hung windows.

Leaning toward quarter sawn oak for the cabs and an warm white quartz countertop. Just playing with the bradbury wallpaper for a backspash... would have to have glass in front of it (or maybe coat it with a glaze that would be washable....)if I actually did go ahead with it there.

Not sure if the fridge should be stainless or white yet.

Stole the cab pic from the Kennebec cabinets home page. Someone posted it recently and I just fell in love.

Fire away!

Hi Deedles, I think Marthavila's fridge is a Liebherr. I believe they cost slightly less than Sub Zero. Many on GW love them.

I'll look more later and comment more, but I love the backsplash paper. I could dream myself into that. It would have the advantage that it doesn't have to be forever. I like that it introduces a strong flowing pattern and a rich organic theme.

    Also really like the cabs.

Hi Deedles, My apologies for repeating if another poster already suggested an oil-rubbed bronze finish for the fridge. Jenn-air makes a french door fridge in this finish to complement your sink:

Hi Pooh, yup... you know, when I posted the bisque pic I almost typed "now I'm getting bored". I do remember that thread, actually. Can't remember if it was someone's real story or someone's hypothetical trying to make a point story... but I do remember. I figure I can fool around all I want in paint and in real life get my big stuff figured out and the BS, etc will make itself known. I do love that Bradbury paper... it makes me smile every time I look at it.

Jessica: Really like cork but I've heard that cork and dawg nails don't go well together.

I took a pic of the flooring samples out in the daylight..

I would keep the wallpaper backsplash. I've like that paper for years and thought of using it my self. For me it makes your kitchen.

The sink bothers me a little but have no suggestions. I would go black on the fridge.

Please keep the wallpaper. Having lived near three original Greene&Greene craftsman homes, I say that bs completely fits the craftsman look. Very beautiful and outside the current trend, but authentic. The fridge is the only element that looks "off." Stainless is just wrong.

i love it--the sink, range and cabs and the backsplash.
it occurs to me tho that the contrast between the countertops and the backsplash is jarring to my eye. i'd want to see a softer colour to blend into the gorgeous earth tones of the backsplash.
as for the floor i like it very much but in this case may be tempted to go darker, to mimic the grounding of the wallpaper.
and we have cork planks and big dogs. no nail marks, as they sink in and cork bounces back.
the finish could be better, next time i'll add a finish to the floor before we use it.

The floor (and this is just my opinion) doesn't seem to go with all your other choices...at least, not as well as the wood. Could you do a vinyl floor that looks like wood? That would be my first choice! Of course, if you really put several coats of (urethane?) on the wood floor, it's supposed to offer a lot of protection. If you do decide to look at wood, I'm sure you can get a lot of recommendations on GW.

More votes 'for' the backsplash. Hooray! :)

    last modified: 11 years ago

The comments about the backsplash are dead wrong, sorry. There seems to be a GW conventional wisdom that everyone is entitled to precisely one interesting item in a room, and everything else must be reduced to wrist-slashing, pillow-over-the-mouth tedium. This is simply incorrect, and very frequently leads to kitchens posted here as proud finished kitchen announcements that are just plain dull.

In your case, the wallpaper functions the same as a key fabric in a room and pulls everything together. How it plays out in 3D is an open question, but the 2D version absolutely does not appear to be too "busy" (possibly the most overused word in English). Keep it.

The floor however--I agree w LL. It reads too harsh, but obviously may work better IRL.

    Your direction is great.

deedles, I wasn't suggesting that you use cork, simply that you might consider Marmoleum in similar tone-on-tone shades to the cork I posted. However, after seeing your flooring samples more clearly, I like your current colors.

Bellsmom echoed my feelings on the wallpaper very eloquently: "I like that it introduces a strong flowing pattern and a rich organic theme."

I also love the fridge francoise47 posted, though it looks pricey! Some commented on the sink. It isn't exactly my taste, and I doubt I'd ever think to pick it out...but I like it in this context. It's unique and colorful; however, it isn't my favorite part of the room, and I bet other options would work nicely as well, should you have second thoughts.

As for the durability of a wallpaper backsplash...most of my google results suggested a tough, scrubbable wallpaper, like vinyl, for an instant backsplash, no topcoat needed. HGTV has a method where you use regular wallpaper and cover it with water-based polyurethane. This Old House suggested covering the wallpaper with 1/4" tempered glass, though I've heard that having the outlets cut out gets expensive. There was also a post on apartment therapy & the kitchn where a gal did just a couple panels with wallpaper, but not the whole thing (and the panels are held up by silicone bikini straps and wedged in place...maybe the budget ran out after the major layout reconfiguration).

Absolutely love the cabinets, QSWO, sink, stove, & ESPECIALLY the wallpaper/backsplash idea! We too are heading toward Craftsman style, & your choices are making me want to get our project moving already! My question was the same as fallingwaters' - the countertop seemed too white (monitor?) - but I'm a fan of deeper (& lots of) color. We're also heading toward paneled (maybe integrated) fridge - just can't imagine SS, white, or bisque nestling in w/ that cabinetry. Your stained glass windows are stunning - are you using all 3 in various places in your home? Are they new or vintage? Can't wait to see more of your "ingredients"!

Francoise: I remember the ORB Jenn-aire... you may have suggested it in another thread? I'm going to call my local salesman and find out the price tomorrow, well, today now.
I did slot it into the dreamboard and although it looked nice, I think a paneled one looks really nice. Price matters though. I do appreciate all your input and ideas!
DebraK and Dretutz: I'll put you down for 2 wallpaper votes.. and there are no suggestions for the sink. It's here. It has to work. It's actually nicer in person than it's showing in the pics.

Fallingwaters: I'd be looking for a counter with more ivory tones. Paint doesn't grab colors very well. I have some quartz samples and a couple of the softer white ones are really nice. I'm interested in your cork floors... dogs are hurting it? What do you mean by a finish? Aren't they finished?

Lav: even the close-up pic of the floor samples didn't change your mind at all? Well, like I said, the floor is still on the table.

Marcolo: Thank you. I do appreciate your time and respect your POV and eye for the obvious that isn't always so obvious until you point it out. And isn't this way better than the clown vomit kitchen/green stove idea?

jessica: thanks for the link. I'm liking the water based poly idea. I'm bound to screw a hook or something into the backsplash at some point and glass would mess that up for me, lol.

JBGB: paneled is looking better to me since I found one that isn't 49bazillion dollars. The KA is doable and yeah, panels.
I am using all 3 windows, one is already in the entry... I had a casement made to accept the glass (out of the original frames) and the smaller one will be in the entry door eventually. DH found them at a rummage sale 20+ years ago... no one wanted them so he got them for 5 bucks for all. What a deal, huh?
    Pooh: thanks!

    I like your lights too.
I want to dig up another post where someone was going to use a sort of plain field tile with little rosettes as an accent tile. Maybe you saw that one.

Thats what I had in my head when I was thinking about your bs.

I disagree that the floor is too harsh. With the wood cabinets and other warm tones, it is balanced.

    I really like it.

Oh, I thought the dark color in the flooring was black.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I like the dishwasher paneled...but the fridge is on the other side of the room, right? So, I think if you needed to trim costs a bit, then a black, white or even stainless fridge might work.

The window looks beautiful, in your new dreamboard pic. The lines of the window go so well, with the lines of the trees in the backsplash :)

As for the floor, it's not that I don't like it...I just don't think it looks right in this particular kitchen. The creamy/yellow and dark brown don't really match the other colors (at least not on my monitor) and the pattern seems wrong, too.

You have lots of long, skinny details, in your cabinetry, your stained glass, and your backsplash...but the checkerboard floor doesn't pick these up at all. Rather, it seems to compete with the other elements.

Don't get me wrong...in a different kitchen, I think that floor would be charming. But, a wood floor would still be my first choice. Well, wood or a really nice vinyl that looked like wood...in a tone very similar to the cabinets. I wouldn't want the floor to stand out at all, but rather just fade into the background. Kind of like the dishwasher.

This is the type of kitchen that I think would look great with your flooring choice. Again, just my two cents...because it's a pretty floor. But, not one I would choose to go with all the other elements in your kitchen. {{gwi:1914942}}From Cottage house plans

I adore your cabinets! Next kitchen (I should live so long), that's what I'm getting. I actually love your floor, but when I look at your selections, it completely commands my attention. I can't stop looking at it. Of course, it will be on the floor and not on the vertical plane. Perhaps a little less contrast between the squares? As much as I love wood floors, you've got a lot of wood already and I like the look of something different on the floor.

since that range is kind of the heart of the matter, I think the backsplash is the best way to get the other greens to speak to one another....

that being said, I would want to see the light in the room before I decided to go with light or dark fridge...the warm white would give it a more craftsman feel, the black and stainless would be more sophisticated/modern bent to it - but it really depends on whether it's a 'morning' kitchen (go with the white) or an 'evening' kitchen.

the bronze, or the panels, could go either way : )

    last modified: 11 years ago

Okay. I was toying with black for the fridge actually. White is an option, too. There are so many shades and some are great and some are yuck. The stainless really doesn't seem to flow with the rest of it in this pic. I thought maybe black would disappear. I have chrome on the stove and copper on the sink. Maybe the best thing is black or a soft white because a fridge that takes panels isn't in the budget for us.

I vote for black or paneled (as you later indicate is a possibility). Let me share my experiences.

I didn't want white or stainless, and was worried that a 36" black fridge would look like a big black hole. After much debate, we settled on getting a paneled fridge and DW that I am covering, not in wood, but in patinated copper. Here are my copper panels at the start of the patination:

We bought a black KA panel-ready fridge and a GE panel-ready DW for this project. There are two things relevant to you regarding this. One is that I was able to buy the fridge at Sears Outlet for modest money ($1800), and the DW at Sears Outlet for small money ($400 for a $1400 MSRP DW). Since they will be paneled, minor scratches and dents don't matter! (I happened to score a fridge that was new-in-box, but I could have lived with scratches and dents on parts that will be covered up.)

Secondly, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. I have been living with the black fridge and DW for months now. I have grown to rather like them. They tend to fade into the background:

Bottom line, I would certainly not be upset if I had chosen the "black hole" option. I think I would prefer that to the "wall of wood" look that I feared if we had done a wooden panel. Right now, I have wooden panels on them (that will soon be covered in patinated copper), and I don't like it as well as the plain black.

Finally, I have provided a link to LWO's hypothetical exercise in straying from your vision.

    HTH.

I'm not sure what the red and cream blocks are for (is that tile) but I like the stained checkerboard wood floor floor much better :)

If you have the room (and it's the right color with the range) a few Jadite pieces would look really nice. It would bring a little more vintage/green into the space.

Are you using the other stained glass on upper cabinets in the pantry or somewhere? They're so pretty!

    last modified: 11 years ago

Lav: The red and cream was an experiment that I forgot to delete from the pic. I thought you might like that floor... I think it's really beautiful. I used to have a ton of Jadite and sold it all on Ebay years ago. I wouldn't be opposed to restarting a collection, though.
The other stained glass windows are being used in the entry; one is already installed in a casement window made to fit it and the little one will be in the entry door eventually. They are pretty, DH had a good eye when he grabbed those years ago.

You know, the more I look at this 'dreamboard' in its various configurations, the more I'm feeling (and God help me I hate to utter this out loud) like the sink is kinda the fly in the ointment of this arts and crafts wallpaper thing. There, I said it.

Maybe it's just the 2D rendering or maybe I'm looking at it too much.

    last modified: 11 years ago

You know, I liked the little green squares that brought in the gorgeous stove.

I also love the wallpaper. It is all so soothing to the eye. Like a perfect quilt. The sink didn't glare for me, either. It is just another lovely texture. Could you introduce a few understated copper ornaments, perhaps hardware?

I'm not hip to the stainless, but when someone put it in with wooden panels, it relaxed me. I'm not hip to the idea of cream, either, even though the counters look that. I think the fridge should be in keeping with the perfect era you're creating.

However, the mock-ups without the wall paper? All I could moan was "BORING!!!"

I don't know how many glass cabinets you're going to have, but I'm thinking the beautiful slab (my favorite, beaded inset!) gives the eye rest and the ability to enjoy the textures and depth of the kitchen.

I like the wooden checked floor and it introduced a bit of red, which I love.

All in all, trust your gut. It's absolutely beautiful

    last modified: 11 years ago

The wooden checkered floor is beautiful! But, I miss the little green squares, which tied in the windows, range, and backsplash.

The sink was just 'ok' earlier...but it's growing on me. When I picture a plain one, I get the same feeling I did from your backsplash-less boards, which was 'meh'.

I'm not sure how I feel about the paneled fridge; I may prefer the cream. However, the old house I was visiting Saturday did have a wood-cabinet-looking ice box, so paneled may be the way to go, if you can.

Your copper sink is gorgeous, don't doubt it. Its patina references the green in your Chambers. (I am jealous I can't use my white Chambers, and have to sell it!)
I love the Marmoleum and I think it has the right feel for the era you are recreating. I might just play around with the colors a bit more. Leave the green in the mix in some way, even if it is in a border, but perhaps the other colors should not be such a contrast. What about a golder cream, and a golder/redder brown, perhaps these would highlight the warm honey and amber of the cabinetry more?
Your choices are all lovely and I am sure you will make the right one on the flooring too.
PS I think the black fridge does disappear, but panels would be perfection. Definitely, not white and not stainless.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Deedles- I like the copper sink! It looks great with the backsplash and stained glass (at least on my monitor) and I really like the glass in some of the upper cabinets, too.

Now that you have the wood panel for the dishwasher (which looks wonderful and doesn't distract from the sink, backsplash and stained glass) I want to change my opinion about the fridge. I think the stainless steel would look great, since I believe the fridge and pantry are off on the other side of the room....far from the copper sink. And, the stainless steel would tie in with the chrome accents, on the range.

Can you post your kitchen plan, just so we can see where everything is located? It would help to see how the items relate to each other and how close together they will be.

Oh...and the floor. I know your close up shows the tiles as creamy/yellow, dark brown and green...but on the dreamboard those dark brown tiles look black. I think this might be giving the black fridge an advantage, since it appears to tie in with the floor tiles.

And...I still think the stained checkerboard wood floor is the best! :)

the sink pops with the range, honest.
and that dark wood floor was great.
would you ever consider a dark green floor?

also i think jerusalem limestone would make gorgeous counters with the sink and wallpaper and range.

oh and the cork planks hold up well to dings, but the finish was too fragile for me. i scratched pretty badly moving the fridge.
next house i will add several coats of poly or something to the cork planks.
we like them much more than tiles and the cork is really nice to stand on.

So I had to go to Bath, ME yesterday and stopped by the Kennebec Cabinet showroom. So lovely. They are not a style that could work in my home, but it was fun to look. Are they making your cabinets? Are you in Maine?
I don't want to distract you from your vision but I really fell for the cherry cabinets with the dark countertops. They seemed to complement each other and not stand apart as separate elements. If your dream is a whitish countertop it certainly works with cherry as well, I just wondered if you had contemplated dark.
I do still think the perfect flooring is elduing you, it could be the dream board mechanism making the marmoleum colors too stark. I saw this picture on Houzz and I love the way the two colors blend seamlessly and look all worn and sandwashed. I wonder if it was a special finishing technique?

    Hi Deedles,

Sorry if I missed it and you already mentioned it: what are the floors in your living room?

Now that I see your floor plan and see how large the opening is from the kitchen to the living room I am thinking that maintaining the same flooring in both rooms might work well for "flow". Perhaps the same could be said for your dining room/porch?

Or, perhaps you want to strongly articulate the differences between the two rooms through the flooring?

    Hi deedles,
I am posting this in case it helps. I came across it today while searching for my own inspiration kitchen on Houzz. It has lots of similarities to your dreamboard(IMHO) because it mixes a similar craftsman cabinetry with green cabinetry that refrences your green Chambers. And, it has your original Marmoleum floor choice.(sans green diamonds)! Their hardware is chrome, but perhaps we can think of that as a reference to the Chambers as well.

Localeater: you lucky dawg! I'm in Wisconsin so no, haven't been there nor ever will be probably. I sent their pic to a local place that seems to build really nice kitchens so they had reference of what I'm wanting. AND, the nice lady at Kennebec said they'd sell us the stain used on those cabs, so there's that.

The second pic! Thank you! I think that looks really nice and works well with the floor.. and the yellow/cream walls as my countertop... probably not that yellow but you know.
I'm adding that one to my ideabook!

As for the floor pic, I think that's just two of their colors that match each other beatifully in tone and intensity. I like that! The guys that install it have a special technique to bond the separate colors so that they are seamless. It's not a DIY.

Pawa: thanks for the pic... I really do like the brown and butter squares with the green diamonds. Er, actually it'd be brown/butter diamonds with green squares... however it works on the diagonal.

BL: Thanks for taking the time and checking back in to let me know what you think!

CE: I'm putting you down for the original floor idea, then?
Thank you for the kitchen envy but let's wait and see how it all turns out... not to mention WHEN it turns out. I know you're well versed in the long view :)

I have rarely ever had kitchen envy in my life til I started looking around here at everyone's stuff. Jeez.

Francoise: The living room flooring is TBD. Actually leaning towards wall to wall wool carpeting as our sump pump is right under the living room and it's kinda loud. Also, I like carpet in a living room AND there'll be a beamed pine ceiling so I'd like to keep the clattery noise factor minimized.

What I want is a floor that flows through both the entry and kitchen (since the way in to the house is through the kitchen), maximizes the visual 'space'(teeny entry) , was low maintenance, tough and easy to clean and doesn't off-gas nasty petrochemical gick. Have a real problem with Monsanto/Dow and their ilk and will not spend $$ on their products if at all possible.

I felt like Marmoleum diagonal checkboard pattern fit all those criteria for the entry/kitchen and I do love the look... that Grandma thing again, probably. And it's a small house so I'm trying to keep a visual flow and not have 'this floor' and the 'next floor' and 'another floor', you know?
