Yes, you are right. There should be a molding between the cabinet and top crown molding so you don't have a gap.

Yes, I agree! We had the same problem with our crown. When we ordered the cabinets and crown no one told us we would need something to fill that gap. Thankfully we had some extra crown that we were able to cut and put in there to fill the gap.

I am not far enough along to offer any advice but I was actually going to put a post out there just to see how things were going for you. Looks like things are coming along. Wishing you continued progress.

Personally, I don't think it looks that bad. That style crown usually doesn't have another piece of trim beneath it. The cabinetmaker possibly could have done a little better making the doors/end panel taller to minimize the gap, and it looks like maybe the crown is projecting a bit too far past the doors. Also, I think the wrong color is contributing to it looking off.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad that it's not just me that thought the molding looked strange. I was beginning to think that maybe my vision is impaired after looking at so much stuff and making so many decisions over the course of this seemingly never-ending project! :)

Christine - thanks! The progress is very slow, but I suppose anything is better than nothing! Not sure if you saw the ongoing drama with the floors, but I posted an update with a photo also - the link to the post is below.

Mom2reese - thanks so much for those photos. I see what you mean and agree that the cabinet maker could probably have done a better job. We wanted a very simple crown and didn't want it to extend to the ceiling, although I don't even know why now! I initially wanted a much more modern look, but scaled it back a bit due to the age of the house and the style of the other rooms. I'm aiming for something between modern and traditional now, but not sure I'm hitting the mark! Anyway, after looking at the cabinets over and over, I think the cabinet maker may be able to just detach the molding from the piece he has it sitting on and attach it directly to the top edge of the cabinets (for some reason he put another piece on the bottom which raises it up more, but I think the odd gap at the corner will at least be eliminated by doing that (if that makes any sense!).

Thanks for those photos! I thought the same thing when I first saw the cabinets and said to my husband "he's not finished is he?" But we found out he was which worries me a bit - why would a custom cabinet maker think that looked OK?? Hopefully, he'll either have another solution or the one I described above will work (attaching the molding directly to the top of the cabinet - much like in one of your photos). I'm not willing to just deal with it since it will bug me every time I look at it. I'm sure he's thinking I'm just being difficult but I'm sorry, we're paying him for what WE want, not what he thinks is OK. I also still can't believe that he didn't notice the color difference until putting up ALL the molding. It was very apparent as soon as I saw it, even though it doesn't show up as well in photos. I really don't want him painting (spraying) the molding where it is because I'm sure no matter how careful, it will somehow get on something else and create yet more issues. I have a feeling that's what he's going to want to do though since it will be easier than removing it all.

The specification of the door-style end panel creates the notched corner.

If you treat the sides of the cabinets as a flush panel or "furniture side", you don't end up with this type corner in the body of the cabinet.

I think the way it has been treated is ok.

Palimpsest - that's exactly what I was telling my husband yesterday! The end panel actually wasn't specified as a door-style, however we simply told the cabinet maker that we didn't want them to be plain and look unfinished. He either forgot about that or never put it into the plans, so when he installed the cabinets and we asked about it, he just installed door-style panels. So...of course I wasn't thinking about the molding later, and this is the result. But anyway, we'll see what he says about installing the molding differently and see if that helps. I think the biggest issue for me was that this cabinet maker is very low-tech. For example, the only "drawings" we got were by hand, and consisted of boxes to show us how many cabinets there would be and the basic layout with measurements indicated for each. I have a terrible time visualizing anything anyway, much less how the molding will finally look on the cabinets :) I suppose for that reason I should have gone with a KD who could give me very specific drawings of how everything would look!
