Would this look funny?

The island saga continues... I have 72" available for an island and I need a 32" base min for the cooktop. That leaves a 20" base on each side. I want a trash pullout on the right but it only needs a 17" base so I hate to put in a 20" cabinet there. I'm afraid the counter is small enough that it will look funny with the cooktop off center. Perhaps more importantly, I use the right of the cooktop as a prep area so I don't want to make it any narrower. I'm also not sure how much wider I can make the pullout cabinet and still fit the pullout hardware.

Would it look funny if I made the pull-out cabinet 17" and used a 35" cabinet for the cooktop but pushed the cooktop to the far left side of the drawer base cabinet? That gives me a centered cooktop relative to the countertop and maintains the prep space but, viewing from the front, the cooktop will not be centered in it's cabinet. There is already asymmetry in the front view because I'm using drawer bases for the left side and cooktop cabinets and the pullout has a door.

I think it might. What kind of cooktop? If it's a flush one you can maybe pull it off, but if it's gas, I don't think so. Is there a hood?

I do understand not wanting to waste any inches, but there might be a better way...

What about using a 17" cab for the pullout trash, then a 3" pullout beside it? I LOVE my 3" pullouts (i'm just now starting to fill them up... they are holding FAR more than i would have expected!

    It's a Miele induction cooktop.

Hmmm...I thought about a pullout but didn't realize I could get something that small. It seems like it would be relatively expensive for such a small amount of space. What do you have in there? Do you have a picture of it?

I have a 3" pullout. I use it for storing my spices. I have another area with 3" filler and wish I would have gotten a second 3" pullout instead. Here is a picture of mine.

Crap...one more thing to think about! I thought I had almost all the details worked out. I have currently have all my spices in the top drawer of a nearby 36" drawer base and that's worked out well so I'm not sure I want to mess with them. I saw someone had their knives in a narrow pullout. That was really neat but I'd be worried about having knives in a base pullout if we ever had little kids in the house. I was actually wondering if I could put a magnetic rack on the back of the the corner angled wall cabinet. That would be a perfect location. I assume I'd have to make the shelves less deep so the knives would fit there.

While I'm asking about the island, I'm still not thrilled with the asymmetry I've got with a drawer base for the left and center cabinets and a door for the trash pull-out on the right. I just went through some pull-out threads and saw some that had a full sized door attached to the bottom drawer with an independent drawer inside (like a bottom freezer drawer). That would give me a drawer with the look of a door, but I'm a little worried about problems with the door warping if it's only attached at the bottom and because the drawer pull would be near, away from where the door drawer front attached to the door. I've seen it done with small drawers, I'm just worried about trying it with bigger ones. Has anyone had issues with that?

I sent an email to Scherrs asking if they can do a 3" pull-out but I'm having a hard time figuring out how I could put that small of a space to use since I *think* I've already got a place for everything.

Anybody have comments on my question about making a bottom drawer with a full height door front and hiding a middle door behind that so the island would have a "door" panel on each end and a drawer base in the middle?

WOuld it be convenient to use the 3" pullout to hang dishrags?

I would do the 32 inch base for the cooktop flanked by 3" spice and 3" dish rag pullout and then 17 inch bases on either side. I just like things symmetrical. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Just wanted to let you know that you do not need a cabinet for the 3 inch pullout. Rev a shelf has one that you simply position in between 2 adjacent cabinets and attach a front to it. The fronts can be fancy like a corbel type thing or a plainer cabinet front with a knob.

I would use the 3" for tall oils, very handy near the stove. - the shelves on the rev-a-shelf should be adjustable (you should ask anyway) - I've also seen it used for vertical lids, which would be handy near the stove. I agree with michellemarie, except instead of a dishrag pull out (which I would not use near the stove) have a "mitt' pull out, where you could hand your oven/stove mitts. I just put mine hanging behind a door instead of in one of my drawers - it is the same amount of movement, and I like it so much better. I posted a link to a Rev-A-Shelf pull out that has a stainless panel that accepts their hooks, so you can hang anything you want in that space.

I don't think there are actual 3" cabinets...I think they're filler pullouts. If they were cabinets, you'd lose the width of two walls (1" to 1-1/2", depending on the thickness of your cabinet walls).

Instead, Rev-A-Shelf (and others, I'm sure) came up with the "filler pullouts" that attach to the cabinets on either side. That does, however, mean (1) they have to be installed at the time of cabinet installation, not after and (2) they cannot be installed next to a DW or at the end of a cabinet run if there's no wall at that end.

(I think you could have a wall put in next to the DW or the open end, but you will have to have another 3/4" for the pullout to fit....3" filler pullout + 3/4" panel to attach the pullout to = 3-3/4" space needed.)

mdod, is the side of your island visible from far away? Or does it face toward your perimeter? The reason I ask is that my island is not at all symetrical with regard to cabinet configuration, but it's a complete non-issue because it's only 42 inches away from my perimeter counter. You really can't stand far enough back to look at it and notice it's not symmetrical. Besides, I don't think a 32-inch drawer based flanked by a 20-inch door unit on one end and 20-inch drawer unit on the other will look assymetrical at all.

Here's a run of cabinets on my perimeter, which unlike my island, is very visible from the rest of the room. You'll notice I have drawers to the right of the cooktop and a door to the left. Does it look bad? Sometimes we overthink these things. =)

I also prefer my spices in a drawer instead of a pullout because I don't want to stoop down to read the labels from the side. I guess you could solve that by labeling the tops, but that won't help with the spices on the lower tiers. I would go ahead and use the 20-inch cabinet for your trash pullout and use the extra space on the side to store paper bags or something.

Thanks for the suggestions, links and pics everyone. The idea of using a pull-out for lids is the most intriguing to me. I love having all my spices in the top drawer of my 36" drawer base. If I had room for a wider pull-out I can see where one would be good for oils but the 3" pull-out will only fit small bottles and I'd want to be able to fit all of mine in one place.

I only looked at the price for the Rev-a-Shelf but I can't bring myself to spend $300 to get use of 3" of space. These things look like a drawer installed on it's sides. Has anyone done a homemade version?

I can see a pull-out to re-capture space lost to a filler but there's no way I want to drop my 20" drawer base on the other side down to 17" to have symmetry. I was excited that I had come up with a possible alternative to having one on each side by extending the door for the trash pull-out and attaching it to the filler pull-out too so that both would pull out together. It seems like that should be possible. Then I realized that the filler pull-out goes all the way to the top but the trash pull-out has a drawer above (which I want)-soooo close.

Beuhl: You are the queen of links, especially to great threads!

Erikahn: Yes, that side of the island isn't visible from the angles most people would be viewing it from so I can live with the asymmetry but I just like symmetry. Yours looks great but it's also a longer, more complex run where you don't expect everything to be symmetrical and you do have symmetry with the cooktop and pull-outs and the end units are comparable in size.

I need to see how these trash pull-outs work to see if I can take advantage of the extra space within the trash pull-out.

I hear you on overthinking things. That's the curse of all the information available on the internet, especially for a perfectionist/OCDer like me! I can research and analyze every decision to death. I got all worked up over buying a stainless look refrigerator with black sides and finally went with it anyway because it had everything else I wanted. With my layout I never even notice the black sides.

I had to laugh at a post I read in the bath forum where the poster said s(he) picked out the tile, fixtures and vanity in less than an hour without any advanced research, just going with gut instinct. Then she found Gardenweb and and drove herself insane deciding on wall colors! I can soooo relate!
