Pre-Kitchen Layout Question

I am trying to figure out appliance / basin / cabinet sizes for our kitchen and had a question(s) for y'all.

Let's say I want to have a 30" freestanding refrigerator, a 24" dw, a 30" range and two 24" cabinets/drawers on one wall.

Adding the dimensions together, I'm at 9 feet of stuff. Can I truly fit 9' of stuff in a 9' space? Or will I lose inches in between each of these items?

Thanks so much for your help with this.

The 24" dw and 30" range are generally sold by "opening width" not actual size. So, they come slightly smaller than 24 and 30 inches respectively.

The fridge will have it's own quirky requirements for door clearance and air space. Check the manufacturers website for a "dimension guide."

Not sure how the cabinets work -- I've been assuming they'd take 24" of space, but I have not tried to use all my wall space down to the last quarter-inch.

Are there walls at each end of the 9' space?

Do you plan to have side panels surrounding the fridge?

Have you checked the specs on the fridge you want for required clearance?

Do you plan to have a sink by that dishwasher?

    But the first thing to think about here is that 2 1/2 (fridge) + 2 (Dw) + 2 1/2 (range)+ 2 (1 of 2 cabs) + 2 (2 of 2 cabs) = 11 feet, not 9...?

Thanks for your replies and math correction. There's a wall on one end of the run--the right side.
In this scheme, the fridge will be on the left hand side of the run with a hinge on the left side (handle on right). I wouldn't think door clearance will be an issue here. I haven't chosen a refrigerator yet. Next to it is the DW and then the basin and then drawers, range, drawers.
The washbasin we're looking at is freestanding and 24" wide. If possible I would like to include this basin in this run. I have 13 feet of space. (The mis-mathed 9' scenario was to help clarify what I was asking)
Across from this run will be an island which we could put a sink and/or dw. In my mind, having to rinse a plate and make a turn to put that plate in the DW wouldn't be that cumbersome. I've never done it so if you think it's a total no-no, please opine.

As others have said above, most of those items allow you to just add up the inches, except for the fridge.

It sounds like you are not considering a corner cabinet -- those vary in the dimensions available. Our super susan is 36 inches wide, for instance.

What kind of flooring will you have? Rinsing, and then turning to reach the dishwasher will add up to many drips on the floor over the years... if that ends up being the plan I'd go with something other than wood or tile on the floor. (Tile isn't fragile, but the grout is a pain to keep clean.)

Would it be possible to put one of the 24-inch-wide cabinets/drawers on the other wall, in order to keep the sink and the dishwasher on the same wall?

I like a dw next to the sink, and with the right spacing could tolerate it in the run 90 degrees to the sink run...but across the aisle would be a pain, maybe even physically, as that's a lot of turning and twisting, and maybe slipping on water.

As for the original question...Against a wall, you usually want room for a scribe piece to make up for any lack of plumb. Since your run is open ended, it gives you room to move the fridge in and out without pinching, so that's a plus. Is the 13' exact or do you have any play? A cabinet is probably the measurement, plus or minus maybe 1/8", or at least 1/16". Don't make things too tight for reasonable margins of error.

Since not all walls, etc. are perfectly straight/square/etc., don't plan on using the entire space...leave a few inches (3 maybe) for "wiggle room".

If it's open on both ends, it's not usually as much of an issue, but if there are walls on one or two ends, then you need to plan for some uneveness.

Thanks so much, everyone. Your wisdom really helps clear this up.
If we do end up with this arrangement, I'll shrink the drawers to make sure the DW and sink fit next to each other and make up the cab space in the island.

    Have a great 4th everybody.

Consider a French door as only one side at a time need be opened and each door only opens half as wide.
