Could Use Some Backsplash Brainstorming

I've ordered Quarter Sawn Oak cabinets in a rather deep brown color, with rivets in the corners from Kraftmaid - color is called "Kaffe". I'm about to order Ceaserstone's "Jerusalem Sand" in a honed finish for the countertops. Have not made up my mind for the floor, although I saw a ceramic tile which is sort of a terracotta with sand and black tones in it with the terracotta color as well (it is patterned) or might do wood if possible. Hardware, will probably be one of the darker metals, but not sure which yet. Appliances, are SS.

Anyway - I initially was thinking subway tile but I've put it next to the cabinets/counter material and don't like the way it looks - too bland. I don't want anything "glitzy" like glass - the house is a 1915 Craftsman style home and that's completely wrong for the kitchen. I love the artisinal tiles I've seen but many are far too expensive and I'm WAY over budget on everything thus far (it's not only a kitchen I'm doing, I just purchased the home and it requires a lot of work).

So, I'm a bit stumped about what to use. It feels like it needs some color, something with *some* punch but nothing modern or overly fancy. Right now it's all got too soft a feel to it, too low key.

Any ideas?
