Rail system Track Lighting vs can lights

I would love ya'll's views on putting in can lights or have a rail system track lighting put in the existing light source.

Here is a track light similar to what I am thinking about only in a brushed nickel.

Thanks again for the help... More questions coming :)

Here is a link that might be useful: Track light

I vote can. Much sleeker.. and does not distract from other decor/lighting/etc.

Can. I was debating between can, track or pendant for a while. SInce I already have cans, we are just going to add a few more.

Track lighting is pretty 70's uncool unless you are trying to do a 70's hip style loft. Trying to "update" it by putting it in oil rubbed bronze clothing is even uncooler. It's like taking a hideous Barcalounger and putting $500 a yard designer fabric on it. It's wasting the fabric and making the Barcalounger look ridiculous.

I haven't checked on electricians. I need to add that to the list to check on.
    Thank you for the input.

Can lighting for sure with some pendant lighting above island or peninsula, depending on your layout.

I will give mini track lighting a thumbs up in certain areas such as highlighting a fine piece of artwork. If done right, it is fine in any style of home.

    Cheers!

Can if you can do it. I may be stuck with track lighting since there's only one box in my ceiling and it's poured concrete, but unless you're in an equivalent situation, I'd definitely go for the cans.

Track lighting has come a long way, babe. There are a lot of different systems out there, including ones where you can add wireless speaker units and pendants. I think it does become a design element but in some ways may be preferable to the swiss cheese look and still be able to highlight where you need it. For a great system look up farmgirlinky on this board. She has soapstone, a farmhouse sink, Aga, and ... track lighting.

I would probably do recessed cans if I could. We don't have much choice because we have a vaulted wood ceiling with no attic above it. I hope no one thinks the monorail system looks like 70's track lighting in our modern kitchen.

I have a sloped ceiling with only 2x6 ceiling joists so there was no room for recessed cans. So I went with track lights. It was hard to finds ones that I liked the look of, there definitely are many Austin Powers-looking options available (Yeah Baby!) Also many track lights are designed for spot lighting, such as for accent lighting or task lighting rather than for the overall lighting for a room.

I ended up with the following, with one track along one side of the galley kitchen and another along the other, with track mounted pendants over the peninsula:

    {{!gwi}}{{!gwi}}

I am happy with the look and the light, I am less happy with how frequently the bulbs burn out and how difficult it is to remove the bulbs without damaging the fixtures.

SapphireMoon - due to the electrical restrictions in my co-op building, cans weren't even an option for my galley kitchen (not enough space in the ceiling unless I dropped the ceiling which I did not want to do) . There are many great options for track lighting and I am super happy with the ones we have in our new kitchen. I have adjusted them a bit since the below picture, but you can get the general idea.
