small drawer worth considering?

I have a space next to my stove that needs to be filled. I do not have a matching lower cab small enough, but I DO have a matching upper cab that is 24". The height difference between my upper and lower cabs is 4.5". I thought, what if I bought/built a shallow drawer to sit under this cab. Can I buy that size of drawer? Is it worth building? Or by the time it's framed out will I have no usable space? Although, it's not next to any other cab/counter space so I could probably add an inch? It seems like a good place for the oversized cutting board my DH has that I can never fit anywhere. I guess it could be on top of the cab as well, but the drawer isn't going to match 100%, so under the cab would be better.

The other possibility is to take our 30" Ikea cab (the very max size I'd want to put there, but it's really a little too big and actually has a different purpose), buy nice doors and panels and create a hutch type thing there. But I already have that unused matching upper cab...

I'm not following this - can you post a pic of it?

Eh. It doesn't matter. DH just came home and pointed out the major flaw in my idea. The upper cabs are half as deep as the lower, so it would be goofy to use an upper as a lower. Thanks anyway.

Sure. Why not? You aren't happy with that little empty space and you have a solution. go for it! Nobody HAS to do what everybody else is doing.

If you built the toe kick under it wouldn't it be the correct height? It is shallower but you could cover it with a piece of countertop like butcher block or something that also rested on a support attached to the wall.

SO what if it's a different depth? No one will see it once your countertop is installed. It could be used for tray storage.

But, is the "space next to [your] stove" 24" wide? That's a significant "space". If so, I think I'd rather just get another 24" base cabinet... If not, how wide is it?

I installed 4 small drawers next to my range instead of a pull out or cabinet and I think they will be very useful. So far I'm thinking the top for potholders, the next 2 for dishtowels & napkins, not sure about the bottom. Of course this may change but I'm not sorry I did them.

We are still wrangling with this space. It's more than 24" wide, more than 30" in fact. But I like the size of 24" to keep the doorway from getting crowded. We looked at hoosier/hutch type pieces on craigslist, but they are all wider than 30" and I realized we also have a light switch on that wall now, so a 30" hutch would block that switch.

desertsteph - I don't actually have pictures, it's just an idea in my head. Basically I was thinking of somehow installing/creating a drawer under an upper cab and using it as a base cab, but I wasn't sure if the size the drawer would be was worth the hassle.

Buehl - I wish I could get another base, but these are second-hand so what we have it what we have. But I hear ya about so what if it's a different depth. I'm going to think about that some more.

I'm also going to think about how I could get drawers there. It would be fabulous to have a spot in the kitchen (rather than in the bathroom closet) to keep my kitchen towels!
