Creative Side Table Suggestions

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have a creative solution to my table dilemma?

My sofa and loveseat both have high arms (about 29in). and most of the tables I have seen, that I like, are 25in. or less. Can anyone suggest something I might be able to repurpose as a side table that would give me the height I need? I'm trying to keep the width to about 24in.

Thanks to anyone who has any ideas.

Try looking at nightstands. A lot of them are 29 or 30 inches tall. There's a variety of styles out there, so you should be able to find something that doesn't scream "bedroom" but just looks like a nice piece of furniture.

I have an old piano stool as a side table--the kind where the seat raises and lowers on a screw. You can adjust it to the height you want. I also have an old school desk as a end table--it's 28 inches high. But I was lucky to find one with a level top; a lot of them have a slanted top, so aren't much good as a table.

Have you considered a skirted table? I just picked one up on CL that's 30" high and 26" wide. A very inexpensive way to decorate and possibly allow you to use the space more efficiently until you find something else you like better if you don't want to use it long term. I've been looking for a side/end table for my bedroom to use next to the chair in there and I've had a hard time finding one high enough to work with the lamp I have. It seems like most tables are approximately 25 to 26" on average.

I was going to say the same........look at nightstands. Here is a link for some from Walmart....

Home Goods has lots of side tables in that height range too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought of nightstands, but wasn't sure how they would look in the space, as they are often not as deep as end tables. Maybe I'll have DH drag one down from the bedroom while he's home for the holiday so I can see how it looks.

In the meantime, I may pick up a couple of those particle board round tables and tablecloths. That would atleast give my Christmas guests a place to set their drinks down.

I hate to buy anything I don't really love, but this room needs some tables badly.

    Thanks again,

Well, Levenger makes a 30" high end table, but it's a bit pricey.

The Solutions catalog has a "slim bookcase table" that's designed to be an end table and is the right height.

You could also check with the store where you bought the furniture. There might be a coordinating table that's designed to be the right height for the chairs.

The Sundance catalog has a cool adjustable height table, but it wouldn't fit in with every style: http://www.sundancecatalog.com/PRODUCT/For+the+Home/Living/Tables+%26+Cabinets/48370.html. The Wisteria catalog has a similar table that is all metal and a bit larger.

You could also check Ballard Designs. They have a number of taller tables/cabinets/consoles that would be the right height (I was looking for a taller than normal nightstand and ended up getting one from Ballard).

If you find something you like, but it is too wide, like a small three drawer chest, you can try turning it sideways, so the back of the chest is against the arm of the chair. This would make it seem deep enough and still give you the height you need.

    Hi:
I don't know your style, but I love the classic Eileen Gray adjustable side table. I think it can be used in most all settings. I have one in my smallish living room and I think it looks great. Since it's glass, it doesn't take up a lot of visual space.

My sister in law has a small 3 drawer (or maybe it's 2) antique dresser repurposed as a side table in her LR and it looks great.

Antique side tables (sometimes called "lamp" tables) are usually about 30" high. There are also antique or vintage 3-drawer dressers about that height.

My friend bought some tall wicker baskets with wide mouths and had glass cut to sit over top as a table top. They look lovely.
