I think it would look lovely. Just make sure you have an accent color to break up the neutrals.

As you can maybe tell, the wall color now is burgundy, and I am trying to decide between a khaki color (which the majority of the house is) and a warm rust to go with new grey carpeting. An adjoining room has dark brown distressed hickory wood flooring which I plan to add in front of the fireplace...

You might consider a golden/ocher color which would really make the stone and wood floors pop. Try 3-4 colors in 2'x2' squares to see what you like most. You can get small samples from most paint stores. This way you can see the color next to the stone so you have a better idea of how they will work together. Make sure you check them in all the kinds of light that enters the room. Sunlight at different times in the day can change color a lot so can the lighting you use at night. So make sure that you like your choice works before you commit to the color. Although remember it is only paint and can easily be changed. Good luck!

Forget rust paint. It will remind you of the burgundy you have now. If you can take a few bricks and a carpet sample to a paint store and look for a greyish green if it is in there. It will warm up the grey better than another earth tone.

I suggest that whatever color you decide on, please take several poster boards and paint them with a sample of the color you're thinking about. Put them in various areas of the room and live with them a couple of days and look at them at different times of the day and in different light. It will save you a lot of money in the long run. If you don't like the color, you can paint over the boards again with something else and do this until you get what you like.

I would look at BM Revere Pewter for the room.

TOTALLY! In fact you can pull colors (3) directly from the stone veneer. If you have any extra pieces just lay them out in different configurations until you find what you like then put them in you bag and go. Take them to the paint store, the fabric store. What fun. Good luck.

Not sure why, but I think of grey as a cold color, but am fine with using it in the carpet. What about a dark brown wall color?

Great advice so far, what Is also important is the furnishings you have or wish to have. If you are looking for new pieces decide what you wish to see where for example if you want warm rich leather sofas use a lighter color on the walls or your khaki. If you take a piece of stone to the paint store and identify some of the colors you love then decide how you want to use them with walls furniture art and rugs. This will give you a more cohesive look and help you decide what colors look best.

Go with the khaki or a taupe. Brown will be just like the dark red. Try out the paint before painting the whole room.
