I need a stainless steel side by side refrig to replace by Viking one - which is 12 years old and will cost 3500 to repair... What are experiences with sub zero or other high end refrigerators?

It does use one, very efficient variable speed compressor, whilsts the SZ uses the old style On/off type compressor, albeit 2 of them, which at least to me, is not a "Must have" for me, as I have always lived with single compressor
fridges, and have yet to encounter "Off taste food, or ice cubes.

It does however look like my icemaker has taken a dump.
No Biggie, new one is $155 and you just remove 3 screws to replace it---Not Rocket Science.

I mention the ice maker due to my "Truth in Posting" manner of doing things (Not that others don't do the same),
Since SZ does use the Whirlpool Icemakers (Jenn-Air is owned by Whirlpool now, so I suspects the ice maker for the
JA is probably made my Whirlpool.

It might be interesting to see what the price for an icemaker is for the SZ?

We really like the lighting inside the JA, We like its glass shelves (Some even have a crank handle to adjust them).

It has been very reliable, cept for the icemaker, that has only lasted 5 years (sniff sniff), other than that , it has been trouble free, and it's very quiet.

I adore my Liebherr, if you haven't looked into that brand yet. Best fridge ever, hands down. Silent and keeps produce fresh for an eternity.

I recently replaced both a subzero fridge and separate freezer with one 36" wide unit to fit a renovation. I wanted to stay high end but I also needed a lot of freezer space that was truly useful. I went with the largest model samsung side by side and I love it. The meat compartment can be separately programmed to be several degrees cooler - it keeps meat fresh for days. The freezer space is amazing. Not a subzero...but a great alternative.
