As someone who has a 19" deep hood over a pro-style range, I would say that no it's not really adequate. Actually to adequately cover the front burners you really need at least 24" and ideally 27". If you're talking about a wall hood, there's no view to block and although 30" is the ideal mounting height you can go higher if necessary to avoid hitting your head. In fact I believe that having a deeper hood is more important than having a wider hood which most people recommend.

My 19" hood does well for things on the back burners and captures some stuff from the front burners, but the outer front of the hood definitely gets greasy.

The hood depth over my CC is 27".

With a high-powered range, that depth is vital.

Thanks weissman, that is probably the question I should have asked. I'm 5'3 and dh is 6'4. I haven't figured out where to compromise on the height of it yet. Modern Aire's range is 30-36" off the cooktop.

I was told that it is best to have the capture area reach the front edge of the front burners. So, if you have that measurement it might help you decide. We have a similar predicament- I am 5'6'' and DH is 6'6''. We are visiting our cabinet maker in a few weeks and will belly up to the range hoods and see if 30" high will work for both of us. Depth is TBD.

@User I am in the same dilemma: I am short and husband is tall. Id like to get the Zephyr monsoon insert and Debating between 19.25” depth and 22.5” depth. Seems that people think that neither of these are deep enough but yet they are commonly recommended by appliance stores who say that depth is more of a personal preference and often has to do with head bumping issues. I was hoping that having a wider insert (42” vent over 36” wide range) coupled with high CFM capabilities would help overcome the extra inches of depth not covered by the vent. I think for practical head bumping and aesthetic reasons it might be better to go less Deep...

@Runnermom - head bumping in real life is not an issue. After a person stands in front of the stove and hood a couple of times your brain develops a memory of where the hood is, and you don't bump your head. So people who fear bumping their heads are afraid of something imaginary. Think of all the millions of restaurants with gigantic hoods, and how hectic it is for the several cooks in front of them, and they never bump their heads.

Ideally, a hood in a home kitchen should be 24" front to back. That is because your cooktop is at least that depth, and you want the hood to cover the front burners. You don't want to spend all that money on the hood, and find that the front burners--which most people use the most often--are not covered by the hood. If you must compromise because of the price of a 24" deep hood, go no smaller than 22" deep.

My husband is 6'5" and my DS 6'7" -- neither bump their heads on our hood, which is 24" deep (the recommended minimum depth) and mounted 30" above our cooktop. At 5'10", I do not either.

Shannon is correct, most people have a "feel" or "memory" for things like that. One thing I did do "just in case" was get a hood without a sharp edge along the bottom. My hood is a Vent-a-Hood and it has the "emerald lip".

@Runnermom I've been looking at the same Monsoon II hood. Did you end up going with that one? Are you happy with it?

Yes, we did end up going with the Monsoon II but unfortunately I can’t report back on it yet because we are waiting for it to be installed. It should happen next week and I’ll report back. Ping me on here if I forget!

We have loved the Monsoon II thus far - the LED lighting on it is amazing for illuminating the cooking space (two different level of brightness and looks terrific next to my other under-cabinet lighting) and it’s nice to have an option for a lower CFM level (and less noise) when it’s warranted. The Monsoon II also comes with a handy remote control which can be stored on a plug on the wall due to a magnetic backing. We do have whatever the manual recommends, as our contractor handled this and had to make sure everything is to code. I attached some pictures in case they help.

@Runnermom do you mind specifying how high you mounted it? Looks pretty high, did you go to 36"? Are you happy with the height?

Yes, we mounted 36” above the range. That is the maximum distance in the acceptable range according to the manual for this model (and most models I believe). We are very happy with the height; it protects the wooden cabinetry above the range, leaves ample head room, and still has great capture.

How has the noise been? I’m deciding between this and best cp5. The best cp5 was quieter when I tested in store (albeit it was a smaller 36” versions and I need 48”). The Monsoon II was louder but it had a second row of LEDs in the back and about $400 cheaper.

So sorry I didn’t see this question sooner! The Monsoon II is not as loud on the lower settings but can become pretty loud on the higher settings. I think the pros of the LED lighting and the cost and efficiency of the insert outweigh the noise cons at the higher settings.

We went with the 42” wide insert for our 36” wide range. We are still very happy with it! The higher settings are loud but extremely efficient and I generally don’t have to turn it up for long. Absolutely love the lighting!

Additionally, does your hood get greasy? We are also doing something similar and are a little afraid that the white wood will be difficult to clean. We satay a lot and use turmeric too.

I love my insert vent hood. I have the 42” monsoon connect. 19” deep. It is quiet, until it’s at 6. Sometimes I forget it’s on.
My cabinet guy advised me not to go too deep. I am so happy I listened to him.

The Monsoon II is 22.5” deep (note that this is deeper than the Monsoon I which has a depth of 19.25”).
The deeper vent allows for more capture.

The vent does get greasy (it’s doing a great job capturing everything after all!) and does need to be cleaned but it’s easy to take the pieces in and out to clean.
