Suggest a wall texturing technique

I am stripping off 30 year old wallpaper (really!) from the stairwell down to our basement which is finished. It's one of those spots I just never seemed to get to in all these years.

The wallpaper covered up the fact that the walls are not all that smooth (it was a DIY project, obviously).

I don't want to take a lot of time and effort to mud, spackle and do all kinds of stuff to make the walls perfectly smooth as it's just a basement stairwell and dimly lit at that.

I am going to prime and paint the walls, but wonder if anyone could suggest a texturing technique that would camouflage the flaws in the wall surface. Textured roller? Sand in the paint? Swirling tool?

The easier the better as long as it looks decent. Thanks.
