Editing Your Posts

Hi everyone,

We've been working on adding an 'edit post' feature and hope to have it fully functional this week. We are rolling it out to a select few forums (including this one) for testing and would appreciate your feedback.

To edit, once you have loaded the page where your post is located, look to the right and you'll see an edit link just under the Clippings area. This will open up the post and you'll be able to make your changes. It will be very similar to making changes in the Preview window when you make an original post.

You will not be able to edit your Subject line.

You will only be able to edit messages that you've posted today and beyond. Messages that you've posted before last Friday will not be accessible with the edit post feature. Also, once you have posted a new message, there is no time limit to make your edits.

Once you've changed your post, a notation is added to the bottom of the post, showing that it's edited. There is always a log kept of the original post.

If you experience any problems, please be specific as to what you are seeing and - very importantly - what type of computer and browser (and version) you are using. Please post issues/feedback to this thread.

Any questions, let me know!

Best,

Tamara

Yay! I can't wait to have this feature as I always make typos. Even though I read my posts in the preview pane, I miss mistakes all the time.

ETA: Thank you. It seems to be working perfectly in Firefox 17.0.

    Awesome! Thank you!

    Oh, this is GREAT news!

ETA: and if this goes thru, then it works on an iPad via a free, crappy, unstable WiFi connection at an airport. That's the true test :)

And did those feet in ancient times
    Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
    On England's pleasant pastures seen?

I want to add a line or two
To test the Edit that is new,
And if it works for me and for you
    We'll build Jerusalem here, too!

    I lurk here. I don't post.

But who can resist the edit function? It works with Safari on a Macbook.

Testing this out. Been waiting years for an edit function...

Yep, it works. Using an IPad.

    Very fine news, indeed.

I strikes me that building this atop Spike's ancient software, and getting it to work as hoped is a programming tour de force. Kudos to the coders!

I often cringe at typos that have crept in to my posts despite editing and rediting them in advance. Now I can fix 'em.

It will also offer an interesting chance to observe an established online community adapting its culture to this new possibility. It seems to me that forums (and message boards) with and without after-posting editing capability have different social atmospheres.

ADDED via edit: Fixed typos. My browser is AOL, running on Windows XP, connecting via Verizon Mobile (hard connection to local antenna.) If you see this, it works for me! The (html?) arrows at top and bottom of the edit page may be confusing to some people. Thanks!

    OK, my turn.

WOW Most other boards limit the editing time to a few minutes to an hour...not a couple of days. What I would like to see with this change is to also eliminate the PREVIEW window and have our input go straight to posting on the forum{{gwi:807}}. Other boards that I frequent do not have the PREVIEW window. Seems an unnecessary step. With the new editing change, we can then go back and edit if we need/wish to.

If this shows up it *Passed the test*

Okey Dokey, Ill test it two.

That should be Okie Dokie, I'll test it too.

I'm not seeing the HTML tags

If you are seeing html tags in your window when you try and edit, can you tell me what browser and version you are using? This is a known bug and once fixed, you won't see the tags. I know it's confusing!

Regarding the amount of time you can edit a post -- sorry, I think I confused you. There is no time limit on post editing. Meaning -- you will always be able to edit anything that you've posted today and beyond, but any posts that you've made before today can't be accessed with the edit feature. Clear as mud?

I like the preview step, because it allows us to make sure the photos are coming up correctly before we post.

Testing from FireFox 13.0.1 with various add-ons.

    1) Remove text and saved.
    2) Edit again to add this line.

As probably one of the world's worst proofreaders and typers, I thank you VERY much Tamara and Garden Web!!!!!!

I agree with Newhomebuilder-would like to just be able to instantly post. (I'm such a FB fan, I'd love to see a "Like" button too!)

Worked for me! Yay! Two thumbs up GW!

Thank you!! This is so nice to have, I always wondered why GW never had an editing option, it made posting frustrating at times for me. I love this.:)

Please do not get rid of the preview window. It is something I really like about this site.

Concerning the Preview window. other boards have the option, but you do not HAVE to go through the preview step before posting. Would be nice to have the option (as with seeing a photo) or not.

I see the HTML tags. Using Windows 7 and IE

Safari, with an iMac running OS 10.7.5

The preview window is a chance to do our editing on a post as it will look, before we drag the rest of the readers through it, so I'm doubling my vote to keep it.

I've been trying to edit a post this morning and it keeps hanging up with an Internal Server Error. Lenovo, Chrome, Windows 7

dlm2000 -- This should now be fixed. Can you try it again?

Worked wonderfully on my desktop (iMac), but I received an error message every time I tried it on my iPad. Gerrie Bremermann's name remains misspelled. ;)
