matching patterns

I am in need of new window treatments for my living room. I am also purchasing new upholstered chairs. I was really wanting something in a pattern and had previously had solids(I was a little nervous about matching so I played it safe) The walls are a light sage green, trim is light cream. carpet is sage in a slightly darker shade. I have a cream sofa with accent pillows in shades of wine, a stripe a gingham check and a floral(these came with the sofa and can be changed). There is an area rug in a bold stylized floral with colors of wine, cream, gold, rose, sage, and black. All my decorative pieces in the room are English and I really wanted to tie this together with a patterned curtain, I love plaid! I am at a loss as to what to look for. I keep finding curtains with the right colors, but when I bring them home it looks like too many different patterns. Am I just being a chicken? Or is there some kind of "rule' when mixing patterns that I am just not seeing? I see other rooms in mags and such and they always look so put together even though you'd never think to place some of those patterns side by side. Do the colors need to be exactly the same tone? If so I am running into a problem as the area rug is so vibrant and a lot of the draperies are the right colors but muted. I haven't even begun to look at chairs and the patterns they will have. HELP!
