End table help

Now that we're mostly settled in and mostly decorated at our new townhouse, there are some details I'd like to attend to. Our end tables from our previous home don't really work with the new layout. We have a long rectangular open area from kitchen/dining to living room, and the stairs go from the far end of the living room up. there are windows along most of the far wall and a corner fireplace as you can see. With the need for a walkway to get to the stairs, and the fireplace/TV layout dilemma, the layout you see below was the best compromise of aesthetics and practicality we could arrive at. My husband likes the chaise for TV/games so that's why it's right in front of the TV.... :)

So the round glass table is too high for the chaise and it's tippy on the rug which we don't like because the cats jump on it sometimes. So we've removed it for safety. But we need something to set drinks on that doesn't impede movement or look silly. And the end table with the lamp beside the arm chair seems too wide near the window, I'd like a smaller table - and maybe remove the table lamp and use a floor lamp instead.

I tried swapping the tables but the square table is too large and in the way near the chaise.

Also we're on a tight budget so any new items need to be less than $75.

Any suggestions?

Something almost at seat level for next to the chaise. Low, for easy reach from elbow level when seated and large enough to place the glass away from where your husband could bump it playing video games.

I'm sitting here with my Eileen Gray In front of me as I do some sewing prep (a table my little granddaughter declared "perfect") and think it would also be perfect for your room.

It's stable, adjustable, iconic, and easily moved wherever your DH might need it.

It's a little more than $75. Target has it for $109, amazon for $99.

Would you be interested in a Chinese Garden Stool? They are small and come in many colors. I think Pier One would be a good place to look or World Market.

I purchased two of these for my sun room. They're terrific as they're so portable. I use one for my laptop and tuck the legs a bit under the chair. The other is used next to a lounge couch and it too can slide over the couch and you can watch t.v. with it so near you. They're very very sturdy and good looking for the low price. I first bought them for 89.00 on another site for my lake house but since finding Wayfair, I'm very pleased with the mark downs. There are others on the same site, just google end tables but this is the best buy.

Your furniture is very heavy - I would probably bring home a little bling - something shiny - lighter in scale and see if it works - if not just return and try, try again.

Crate and Barrell Clairmont grouping might me a nice start to see if it works in your space.

I really don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I think that a lot of the problems you're having with scale and layout are because of the awkward furniture placement. Having the chaise right there kind of cuts the room up, and I think adding another table will probably only exacerbate things. That said, if you want to keep the furniture where it is I would suggest a C table with a heavy base. I linked the first one I could find, but the same style can be found more cheaply elsewhere. These are nice because you can pull one directly up to the couch, chair, chaise, or even over the ottoman. And because they can go over the seating surface rather than next to it, they don't have to take up additional floor space.

AmyAnyman, no worries - I did mention that I am aware this is not the most aesthetically pleasing furniture arrangement... but the room is very awkward to lay out to start with and then when you add in spouse's priorities... well let's just say you don't want to hear about the discussions over surround sound speakers. We don't even have cable TV, we only watch netflix a couple times a week and play games!

However I'd be happy to hear suggestions for better layout, and maybe I could convince DH to try them out.

My original plan was to have the sofa facing the TV and then the chaise and armchair angled in at each side... but this is the one room that DH really had strong feelings about.

Well, I think a tree log/stump still with attached bark then painted/rubbed silver/pewter would look fab. It would add color, texture, be the exact size and sturdiness and be cool.
You'd have to have to find the log or cut it yourself though.

tinan - I get it, believe me. we only watch movies maybe once a week, but EVERY SINGLE TIME my BF moves both club chairs to the hallway, and drags the sofa halfway across the room so he can be at "optimal viewing distance." Apparently our (by no means small) TV cannot be viewed from more than 6 feet away. LOL

If you have the luxury of convincing DH to compromise, maybe you could move the chaise a little bit further toward the fireplace, so that it is still parallel to the couch, and still facing the TV, but the room is more symmetrical. Then you could place a rectangular table behind the head of the chaise (perpendicular to the couch), and the club chair could face the TV, and also use the other side of that same table. I'm not sure if that makes any sense whatsoever. Basically, the chaise and the chair would form a corner, with the table in between them. Depending on the length of the end table, the chair could be almost next to the chaise, or centered in front of the TV. Then again, without measurements I can't be sure - maybe you've tried that and it was awful. ;)

I can tell you have a bit of a challenge here, but it is a lovely space regardless. Best of luck!

Only thing I'd want to do to the arrangement is to pull the chaise back into the walkway area so that when you're sitting on it you can see someone sitting in either the club chair or the sofa without craning your neck....and it feels too close to the TV where it is.

I second the small ceramic side table/garden stool that grandmaof3 mentioned...

I've even seen kitschy looking ones made with camels and such....

I have moved that chaise so many times and it gets dragged back to the "optimum viewing distance" square in front of the TV, LOL. I gave up! If we have company coming I move it to a nicer position :)

Again, you'd think we sit in front of the TV every day which we don't - but apparently when it is done it must be done right!

I love all the suggestions, I'm hunting for the right stool/stump/table.

I ended up with this from overstock - for $80. It's a hand finished wood stool, blends in well but adds interest, and is just big enough to put drinks on without getting in the way. Thanks for the idea of looking for "stools" rather than tables!
