We went with 12" and wish we had gone even deeper. MY DS is about to send me off the deep end with the constant kicking of the cabinets because he is just too close. Even 2-4 more inches would have made a huge difference.

MIne is 17" , counter height, and perfect. DH thought I was nutso when I told the counter guys to make it 17" deep. I used a large piece of carboard, pulled up a bar stool and marked on the carboard where I felt would be comfy and 17" it was. It replaced a 12" overhang, that I found not worth much. In theory you need less overhang the higher the counter...

Mine is 14" and it drives me crazy because the bar stools don't tuck under tight. 17" would have been perfect. In my case I would have had a shallower cabinet versus a larger countertop.

Our bar is 14" deep with a 8" deep overhang and it's never been a problem. I've never heard a complaint and it really never occured to me to make it any deeper when we put in new countertops.

6" is definitely not enough to be comfortable in my opinion. I have 11" at bar height and it's fine. If I had counter height I'd want a few more inches I think. Of course I have brick on the back of the bar so kick all you want :-)

Mine is 74" long and arcs from 12" to 17". It is counter height. The arc makes for less visual imposition on the space but still allows a fair amount of depth.

Ours is a 14 inch overhang and it's perfect.

Thanks for your input. Looks like the cabinet maker will just have to adjust the depth of the cabinet and we won't shorten the overhand.
