Spoon collection solution

I started collecting souvenir spoons when I was about 9 years old, and also inherited my grandmother's spoon collection a few years ago. I don't have a very traditional house, so the standard spoon racks really wouldn't have fit in, so I bought a large shadow box, attached small Velcro dots to the backs of the spoons and arranged them in randomly in the shadow box:

I think that is a great way to display them. I like it alot. Personally I dont care for the traditional spoon holders, they are a bit boring, this is definitely not boring!

    Interesting, and fun!

One thing you might consider doing is taking a pix of the display, printing it out in black and white, and then putting a number on each spoon. List those numbers on another sheet of paper, and write down the provenance of each spoon - where it is from, when acquired, etc. Someday that information might be special to future generations. You could attach those sheets to the back of the frame in an envelope, well-attached.

Oh, very clever! If I saw a traditional spoon display I wouldn't be at all interested in looking at the spoons, but displayed like that it makes me want to go over and take a look.

You sure did get a lot of cool stuff from your Grandma.

How completely wonderful! Please share a picture when you get it hung in its permanent place.:)

And I agree with Les; you definitely should document each spoon. My DM gave me several family items years ago and I didn't listen carefully to whom owned them first and now she is unable to tell me again. (Alzheimers)

Very clever, and so much more interesting to look at than the soldiers-in-a-row look.

I love it! I have the ones we used as babies, but don't like the rack look either. I may have to steal your idea. ;)

I forgot to mention the best part of using the shadow box - no dusting!

I really like the shadow box that I used because it's not too deep, and the backing is designed to stick to Velcro.

Les, that is a great idea to document the spoons. Hopefully I can remember where/who all the spoons came from.

Brilliant idea! I may copy that as I long ago gave away the spoon racks I inherited altho still have the (useless) spoons.

That is a great idea! Vintage utensil photography is a hot item in wall decor. You are cutting edge!

I keep my baby spoon in the utensil drawer and use it when I eat ice cream once in a while:)

Cute idea....but what are ou going to do when they need polishing? And if you have any cardboard in that frame, they will need polishing in a year or less.
Wold have been a good idea to make the backing in a silver cloth to retard tarnish.

Now, that's a lot of spoons!

I posted my spoon shadow box on here a few years ago. They were spoons that I had duplicates of. I already had the shadow box. We have so many from different relatives, and some of our own that were wedding gifts, that I decided to display some.

The spoons have held up quite well without having to polish. The only problem I have is when I decide I really need to use that spoon that's tucked away in the shadow box. Like that stuffing spoon on the bottom. Needed it over Thanksgiving last year, so I took it out. Now it keeps falling off the velcro. :( Currently, that little finger ring spoon in the lower left corner is falling off the velcro. I think the weight and heat get to the sticky after a while.

This year, I used other spoons on hand and didn't bother the shadow box, but would have really liked using one of the relish spoons in there. lol Oh well, I get a lot of compliments and questions on the spoons whenever we have guest over.

I believe I will let them tarnish in place. Many of the newer ones are stainless steel, and this display sure beats having them in a box in a cabinet!

I really like your serving spoon display newhomebuilder.

What really compelled me to get these out on display is that my son bought me several spoons when he studied abroad and traveled around Europe. I wanted to show him that I appreciated his thoughtfulness.
