Kitchen Layout Help Needed

Hi,

So I bought a fixer-upper - built in 1968. It's a standard brick colonial, with 5 bedrooms. One bedroom downstairs and 4 upstairs. The laundry area is currently located as a separator between the kitchen and the living room. I am moving the laundry upstairs so that the kitchen area is nice and open to the family room.

I posted over in the Remodeling forum, and the main comment was 'Need a better kitchen design..'

So everyone, please chime in on the proposed plans, all comments appreciated.

Attached is a link to the plans and pictures of the kitchen. They are fairly close to scale.

The kitchen will be a complete gut down to the studs. The house faces SouthEast, and the kitchen is in the back of the house. Currently the stove and refrigerator are on the wall between the kitchen and the dining room.

Thanks in advance,

SailorGal

I see the case for a different handling of laundry;the office[?bedroom?] has a full bath-do you need a tub there? If you take a section of that room/reduce the bath to a half, or replace tub with smaller shower stall-put laundry in somehow, add cubicles or storage that you like, make another"part"the office or desk/counter/shelves/computer station or what you wish. The reason is that you have quite a large home/therefore assume it will always attract occupants of four or more. This space would be a great dedicated zone for functions mentionned. As you open up the kitch you will have these needs taken care of..important things when greater numbers of people occupy a space.Laundry upstairs? what if you come in from garage and need a rinse basin or such...how does that work with laundry basin/supplies upstairs?

i totally agree with herbflavor that the house needs a way to come into the house better. You need organization area for kids and adults. You need to be realistic about how you will come into the house. if you are coming in from the front door, you need to have something by the front door for immediate dump (ie bench) AND a place to store stuff: hats, coats, umbrella, backpacks etc.

Only you know if you will park in the garage or not. If the garage is big enough, you can carve out storage from the back of the garage.

Sailorgal, I think the kitchen design does need help. You have your stove and sink crammed in the corner, then lots of counterspace with no obvious purpose. Is window placement or plumbing able to move? If you move the stove (which shouldn't be by a window) to the long wall, or at least scoot the sink down away from the stove a bit more, you'd have a more usable space. Moving the stove to the long wall is preferred, because having at least 18" of counter on each side of the cooktop is better for both working room and safety.

Check out the kitchen FAQ and post in detail about how you plan to use the kitchen space. Also, since folks seem to be wanting to redesign the office and entryway as well, I think you should post clearly what parts of your plans are already "fixed" and which are up for suggestions.
