Backsplash Deadline

The wife has a deadline of picking a backsplash later today after visiting numerous tile shops. Hope the good people at Garden Web can offer their opinions.

We have ivory/cream coloured cabinets with light highlighting brush strokes in brown. The counter is a dark brown Cafe Imperial granite which has many reflective specks. The appliances are stainless steel with brushed nickel switch/outlet cover plates.

The last design piece is the backsplash.

Here is a photo of a section of backsplash with sample tiles. I thought the random linear blend looked good at tile stores but this piece doesn't look good. The mosaic has small travertine or marble squares and some light beige glass. Don't think either does anything for me.

We are also considering regular 3 X 6 cream subway tiles or honed and filled travertine subway.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not "feeling it" with the random on the left. The right one is nice, but might be too much if that's all you used. What about using the one on the right in one of two ways? You could do a midfield with the one on the right and then border top and bottom with the creamy subways; or do the midfield in the creamy subways and then border top and bottom with the mosaic. You could also accent between the three fields, in either example, with a thin strip of SS as an accent to tie into the knobs and outlet plates.

Or you could do your creamy white subways and, every fifteen or so inches, accent with something like the tile below. Don't know if it's your style, (and that one is vintage and they're only selling one), but I thought it was pretty.

I love that granite. just a pool of melted chocolate that is.

Some good ideas, especially mixing the subways with mosaics. The subways alone are clean but a bit too plain. Since the floor is travertine, everything except the counter is beige. Wondering if things become too monochromatic. There are much better examples of one on the left. It gets expensive at close to $18 per sq ft.

I like the random blend look - it's interesting and unusual. But I like the mosaic for the colors. I'm wondering if you can't introduce some color randomly throughout the random blend instead of all of it being the one color. The colored tiles can even be a different material than the others.

I like the one on the left alot, but if you're not feeling it, you probably need to keep looking. Is your wife as unsure about them as you are?

Wow, if I could pick a tile that went as well with my cupboards and counter as well as that random marble, I think I would call it a day and thank my lucky stars. I think it looks wonderful and really really sets off your cabinets.

However, it's your kitchen... I personally don't like the tiny mosaics- think it would draw attention away from both the counter and the cupboards.

Thanks for all the advice. We went to another tile shop and picked an unusual 8 X 12 inch ceramic called Twill. See link. It has small 1 X 2 rectangles but the surface is alternatively tilted causing shadow effect at the edges. The shadowing changes depending on the direction of light.

Between the upper and lower tiles we'll insert a 2.5" strip of glass mosaic in a brick pattern.

    Will post pictures when done.

I like the twill much better than the others. Good job.

Wow, I've never seen anything like that. I can't wait to see the finished results. Glad you found something you like.
