Question for zelmar

I saw one of you post, where you said: "None of our large appliances are covered and many of our small appliances are out on the counter and our kitchen looks like a.....kitchen." Can you please post photos of your kitchen, including those large appliances to give me some inspiration because I plan for my kitchen to also "look like a kitchen"? Thanks!

If you go to the Finished Kitchen Blog at http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/ and scroll down to the Z's, you will find the link to Zelmar's pictures. I've always admired her kitchen, too.

Here is a link that might be useful: FKB

    Hi letter100,

I'll admit that my kitchen is never as neat as it is in these photos so it generally looks even more kitcheny. The first 2 photos are the south wall. The first one is from the mudroom. We have to walk through the kitchen to get anywhere else in the house. The 3rd photo is the south wall, the 4th is the west, and the 5th is the east. The cabinet with the glass doors in the 5th is a dividing cabinet between the kitchen and eating area. The 6th photo shows this cabinet from the other side.

We maximized the counter space in our 13'x 16' kitchen which allows the small appliances to be out without getting in the way.

Thank you lyno. It took me a while to put my post together (very slow internet connection today) and I didn't get a chance to see your message first. I'm not sure if I'm in finished kitchens. Even though we've been 90% done for 4 years I keep waiting for dh to make lighting fixtures before calling it done. It's always the "next" project he is going to work on (but my fault too since I'm happy to get other parts of the house more functional.)

Thanks so much for the photos! Your kitchen is not listed in finished kitchens. Any chance you can post the plan / layout also? What style would you say is your kitchen? What wood are the cabinets? What height ceilings, wall cabinets, moulding? I like how you filled the otherwise useless corners, and how you use cabinet legs and beadboard. This is the first time I see it used on the side of the refrigerator, and it looks great! Is that a decorative panel on the sink cabinet? Is the design carved? Any extra maintenance to keep it clean? Thanks for the info!

Oops, I'm sorry, I left out part of the instructions I posted. After you go to FKB, scroll to bottom and on the right side pick "In progress Kitchens", then scroll down to the "Z's".

Here's the layout. The top is the south wall. There is an exterior wall that comes out horizontally (east-west) just above the mw. cabinet--which is what the hutch in the eating area butts into.

I think our kitchen is transitional since it has elements of Traditional, Arts and Crafts, Shaker and modern (at least the appliances and faucets.) Our farmhouse was built in 1912 and I wanted to be respectful of that era.

The cabinets are mahogany. The color is similar to the trim and doors in the rest of the house.

Our ceilings are 100" which made 36" base cabinets, 18" gap, 42" uppers, 4" molding (maybe more like 5" since it overlaps with the uppers) fit well.

The sink panels are routed out vents (I'm assuming that's how they were made.) Our kd (from the cabinet company) suggested this and I'm glad she did. I remember this being a fairly common element when I was growing up. No difficulty with maintenance. The vent holes don't need to be dusted as often as the ledges and nooks of the cabinets.

I like our super susans in the corners of the base cabinets. I'm not crazy about the corner upper cabinet but I like how it balances both the range wall and the sink wall.
