help with trash pullout

I have 48" of base cabinet space to the left of my sink, 24" of which will be the dishwasher. This leaves 24" of space to work with. I need to put the trash/recycling pullout in this space with our silverware drawer above.

Ideally, I'd like the silverware drawer to hold more than those 12" cutlery trays, so that I can also have steak knives, chopsticks, and maybe even serving spoons and/or napkins in the same drawer. 24" would be perfect for the large cutlery drawer, but I can't imagine a 24" trash pullout.

Has anyone seen pics of a 24" pullout where the cans are side by side vs. front and back? Would this be too bulky a cabinet to pull open every time you throw something away? should I stick with an 18" cabinet? If so, what do I do with the 6" of leftover space? We're having inset cabinets, so interior dimensions are about 3.5" less, if I understand that correctly.

Personally, I wouldn't want my silverware (or anything) in a drawer above the trash pullout. Will this be where your main trash sits? If you have a huge recycling center/trash center then you'll have items under there for a week or so. Will you have a compost bin under there as well? I may be wrong, but wouldn't odor and/or fruit flies find there way up into the drawer? We change our trash constantly, but there are those days when we open the trash in the morning and get hit by the odor of last night's dinner scraps that someone threw in the night before. Out goes the trash of course. But to have the silverware or anything above all night? Is that okay??

Our main garbage is a Simple Human trash can with foot pedal (this is the trash can that on occasion can get smelly). And then we also have a trash pull out. There is no drawer above our pull out on purpose. The pull out has two bins. One is used for compost scraps and the other is for light garbage (wrappers, paper, etc. No food scraps). Above the bins, inside the pull out, there is a shelf. We use this shelf for our fly swatter and feather duster.

I have seen the cans side by side. Also front to back with smaller bins on the side for compost.

Are these custom? If so, you can make your trash cabinet multifunctional. Put the cans to one side, and have dividers in the extra space for things like bags, with a lid to keep trash from accidentally falling in.

You can do a false pullout in 6", which looks like it has an inset door, but the whole face frame pulls out as well.

In three inches you can do vertical storage for cutting boards and baking trays. Or you can do a pullout towel bar thingie.

We are just starting to use a trash pullout that is 12" and has a trash in front and recycling behind. 24" sounds like a large pullout solely for trash. Since these are custom, I just wanted to add that we asked the cabinet maker to put a solid barrier between the trash and the drawer above.

Very few manufactures make a 24" trash cabinet. Those that do call it a recycle center and it may have 4 bins to work with. Usually a 21" would be the largest.

I thought having the silverware above the trash was a little weird too. But, it really is the best option for it. The only other possibility is on the opposite stretch of the same counter, but that's in a corner which will be my prep space, and it's less accessible for others.

I read the suggestion here to entirely box-in the trash cabinet to contain odors. Also, my city has a great recycling system that basically takes everything except food scraps. I've taken to using a small trash under the sink for stinky organic waste. Wonder if I'll do the same in the remodel? I always wished for bigger recycling bins...

Still, 24"? I can't visualize it.

Have you seen these from Rev-A-Shelf?

It is meant for a 24" wide cabinet and it is called a recycling center. My trash out is from Rev-A-Shelf also.

Check out Richelieu for european options. We're going with a 15", but I seem to recall they had wider, with a drawer above.

if you don't mind using some of the under-sink area, i really liked the picture of analysisparalysis's under-sink garbage pullout. look under the heading "Fourteen months later...it's DONE!!! (Pics...and a thank you!)" -- the picture is toward the bottom. perhaps then you could use undersink for garbage and the other for recycle. it wouldn't be so bad to have cutlery above the recycle bin.

we considered getting a 24inch double garbage/recycle drawer but tried one out and decided that it would just be too heavy when full. but i don't have some hand/wrist issues-- so maybe it's fine for you.

I also think 24" would be unwieldy for a pullout that you would be using frequently. I haven't seen this, but could you use an 18" pullout, then use the extra six inches of space for open wine cubbies or something like that? You could also do tray storage there. (I don't have insets, so I am no entirely sure how much space would remain in a 6" tray cabinet, but the wine cubbies would be open, so you should be able to use the full 6").

This is the 24" pull-out I was thinking of. It has an automatic lid, and can be mounted under a drawer. Richelieu is the Canadian distributor, but should be available in the US somewhere.
