We have a U shaped stairway that faces a wall. I'm planning a niche across from it so we're not looking at a blank wall when we go up or down the stairs. I was going to make it about 6" deep so that I can put 4" cans on top to highlight whatever I put in there. I was thinking of doing a photo arrangment of family photos of extended family.

Here the floor plan: The wall is not drawn solid but we changed it to solid and 12" deep.

Will it look wierd 6-7" deep?

How high off the ground should I make it? 36 or 42". The ceilings are 10'. It's going to be about 7 1/2 feet wide.
