Reversing sink

While looking through the plumbing supply store, we came across the coolest sink. It's huge. We have the room for it as our sink base is 33", but we have an additional 8" (4 on each side) of filler as we are bumping out the sink.

The thing is, my hubby came up with the great idea of reversing the sink, so that the curved part is in the bump out and the flat part echos the flat of the wall. I think it osunds great. My KD is drawing me a picture to make sure that it works esthetically, my builder thinks it will be fine, the plumbing store owner thinks it's a great idea. The only concerns are that the drain will be in the front and so the plumbing and disposal will take up too much room underneath, leaving the cabinet ineffective.

Any thoughts or ideas?

My GC reversed my zero-radius prep sink so that I could maximize use of the 30" base cabinet. By reversing the sink, the disposal and plumbing trap were in a single plane from front to back of the cabinet. We were able to fit in a trash pullout, a recycling pullout, a compact disposal with air switch, and a soap dispenser with Never MT. I was a little nervous about the aesthetics of having the drain in front, but I love it because the water from the tap goes straight into the drain. I wish I had reversed my clean-up sink as well.

Thanks, Lisa, it's Jeffrey Court's Fire and Ice in quartzite. Jodi_in_socal introduced it to the forum, and there have been a few copycats. If you do a search on Fire and Ice, pics of a few installations should pop up.

Melinrk, I don't think I'm getting the correct pic of your sink when I try your link. Is it a single bowl?

Also, if your sink cab is pulled forward, make sure you pull forward the sink, too, to avoid an awkward reach into the sink. You want a strip of counter no more than 4 1/2" wide in front of your sink. The width of the strip of granite in front of my sink is 3 1/2". My GC reinforced the cab to support this narrow strip.

I would think about how you use your sink b/f I reversed it. You usually "use" the bottom edge more than the top and that's where you want the most & best access to the sink.

If you reverse it, you will really only be able to comfortably access the sink in the middle...the sides will be too far back (b/c of the curve). You'll have to reach further into the counter to get to the sink from the sides.

Is there any way to mock it up to see how it would work for you?

Ah, now that I see the sink, I don't think I would reverse it, for the reasons buehl mentions.

May I ask why you are getting a D-bowl, especially since you will be pulling your cabinet forward? You would have more room with a rectangular sink.

Actually, it's huge and I think we will be able to utilize the whole thing. We really need to look at the actual sink again and maybe even make a full scale mock-up of the sink and the cabinet.
I was planning to do a rectangle until we saw this one in the showroom.
Since I usually cook multiple things at the same time, I always have multiple big pots to clean. It looks like I can fit several pots in the sink AND clean them.

It looks like it will be fine to me. I don't think anyone is going to know that it has been reversed unless you mention it.

It is pretty, and at 37 1/2" wide, it is gigantic! You must have a huge sink base.
