So how should our Loo Look?

{{!gwi}}Even with Swarovski crystals, it's still an exposed intestinal toilet.

    I saw the Swarovski one in the Hammacher-Schlemmer catalog. Nah, I don't want one. haha

  • 17 years ago

    Oh my wouldn't you feel so 'special' using that sparkly loo!

    I kind of like the wood & stainless one on the right, actually. The alligator print one with the matching bidet is disturbing.

    I think I'll take my ADA height, elongated plain white potty, thank you. Function over form is important for those types of things.

  • 17 years ago

    I am curious about the stainless steel toilet at the bottom of the thread. You don't give your source for the photos.

    I've always wondered why homes never have stainless steel toilets in them? I think they look great. They put stainless steel toilets in jails and places where vandalism is rampant because they can't be smashed. Stainless steel looks so sleek and modern and would perfect in the right decor. It would be timeless. Never again would anyone have to rip out a perfectly good toilet because they do not like the color. Is there a drawback to them that I am not aware of?

  • 17 years ago

    dilly, I'm sure the stainless toilet show spots. :)

  • 17 years ago

    bodica, lol indeed -- can't imagine how long it must have taken you to put together that "lovely" collage. Very impressive.

    Is it alligator? I thought it was python, and those were my favorites... in a manner of speaking.

  • 17 years ago

    Stainless toilet, you'd have to find tan colored microfibre cloths for cleaning, I've only seen them in brighter colors.

  • 17 years ago

    That first pick with the crystals sent shivers down my spine. I can't even imagine how one would clean it and keep it clean. Yuck! Interesting morning eye opener. I'm going for a second cup of coffee!

  • 17 years ago

    I have to admit that I LOVE the wall-mounted toilets and wish we had them.... just imagine being able to mop underneath so easily.

    This one is in a shower wetroom,

    Note the trough drain.

  • 17 years ago

    Wow .. most of those are just plain awful ... definitely sent shivers down my spine.

  • 17 years ago

    Please add your pic of how it should look

    Does the orange one seem awfully low to the ground to anyone else?

    I have to admit that I like the floral one with the matching trash can.

    Nice one piece design. No dirt and odors to get trapped in between the tank and the bowl piece.

    Bodica, having the whole bathroom double as a shower stall was (is?) not uncommon in Mexico. Really. I've seen it done that way lots of times. I think it's stupid.

    I had a friend here where I live in the Midwest, who bought a condo with carpeting in the bathroom. She and her husband were doing lots of fixing the place up, redoing the kitchen and whatnot. She was giving a tour of what they had done so far and what the plans in the works were. She wanted to rip out the carpeting in the bathroom (Good idea!) and replace it with tile. AND she wanted to put a shower head on the wall. She was showing us all where she was going to put the showerhead and drain in the floor. She kept saying "I don't care if it splashes on the toilet. I don't care." I guess once you get used to something the way it is, its what makes you comfortable.

    -------------------------------

    I Googled and found some examples of it being done. It seems tourists like to blog about it and pose with pics.

    Thanks for more knowlege DillyDally, I've not seen wetrooms like that, interesting and always fun to learn more, I wouldn't like it that close either, the handicap access to use and shower with wheelchair or even gerney is one option, but those combos almost seem like rv's. What's the best option you have seen or what should your dream Loo look like? I love the simplicity of the Kohler Hatbox if it has to be seen, otherwise, privately concealed, easy to clean would be my priority.

  • 17 years ago

    The whole shower in the bathroom bit would scare me. I don't want my obituary to read that I died after slipping in the shower and hitting my head on the loo. Hmmm... would that mean that there is a built in seat in the shower?

    OK - I'll play:

    I don't know why that third pic came out so dark. It was not that way on the blog. The guy is standing under a showerhead and staring at the shower control handle with a posed confused look on his face.

    This "shower bathroom" is in Sweden:

    In other countries where homes are much much smaller than in the US it is common for the washer and dryers to be put in the bathroom. Here idea for one space saving monstrosity. This ecologically friendly one saves the laundry water in a tank to be used for flushing. Great for areas where there are water shortages.

    I think this has been posted here before. Maybe not. Those poor fish, every time it flushes.

    Retrofit a foot flush for your toilet so you do not have to touch the handle. Ugly.

    A toilet so fancy that you would not need a fuzzy tank cover:

    This one I would be afraid of. It looks like it might eat a person.

    As you can see, Alibaba makes some ornate toilets. If you visit their website you will see toilets in the same genre but a bit more restrained in design, and they actually do look quite nice unlike these.

  • 17 years ago

    The throne:

    The fuzzy toilet cover.

    The carpeted toilet.

    The "Hatbox" toilet. I would be afraid no one would recognize it and use the sink.
    {{!gwi}}

    Sleek design handicap toilet. That is not a matching sink next to it. It is a chest board to lean on and handles on the side to grip. I think this is an ingenious and well thought out design. Handicap persons often complain that everything made to accommodate their needs looks so ugly and no thought goes into how the thing looks. This looks cool.

  • 17 years ago

    Call me crazy, but I truly wish I had this:

  • 17 years ago

    That thing that looks like a coffee table or TV stand is a toilet. Look close. No lid. The wood slides across and over to cover it. Nice idea at first glance but ooooh I would not want to clean that thing. Maybe it would stay clean since guests would not recognize it as a toilet and use the sink. LOL.

    This looks like a toilet scrub brush in the photo without any reference points in a room to denote the size. It is a toilet.

    Ya gotta be kidding. The description accompanying the photo say it all..........OMG Imagine trying to clean that thing? Did a man invent this? Storing this "urinal converter" next to the toilet and lifting it onto the toilet to use? LOL. Can you imagine "suffering from nausea" as they say, and trying to fit this thing over the toilet and then clean it up afterwards? This thing is for sale and not a joke.

    Gold Man is a toilet accessory that enables a regular toilet seat to be adapted to become a urinal for men avoiding the unhygenic practice of urinal spillage during toilet usage. It is also a useful addition in case of sudden need for those suffering from nausea.Gold Man is easy to store on its own plastic base close to the toilet and
    May be lifted in place as and when needed.

    Can't train him to put the seat back down? How about a button operated sliding toilet seat? Nice idea until the slider starts to corrode, and the twice daily cleaning of the slider with a Q-Tip sucks all the fun out of life.

    Any one every encounter a German style toilet while in Europe? The hotel rooms and even public restrooms supply a toilet scrub brush so you can clean the shelf afterwards. I was told that it is thought to be unsanitary to have water all in the bottom of the bowl because of the possibility "splashing" on to your butt. I learned later that you are suppose to put toilet paper on the shelf FIRST so that when it flushes there is not so much "residue" left to have to clean. These style toilets were all over Germany and I heard they are common in Russia.

    Aunt Jen, they can be found for sale with matching sinks too!
    {{!gwi}}

    {{!gwi}}

    You think your bathroom is tiny? Yes that is the sink in the corner. It is one of those "water saver" toilets. Water from washing your hands is stored in the tank to use for flushing, hence saving water.

    I would be afraid this one would escape if you did not keep the door locked.
    {{!gwi}}

    No, this is not a display in a store it is installed in a home. Why the platform?

    A bunch of the toilets the OP posted are antiques or reproductions of antiques. Many Victorian-era toilets and sinks and the occasional ceramic tub were beautifully decorated, embossed, transfer-printed or hand-painted, just as nicely as any table china - indoor plumbing being such a novelty and status symbol, great effort was made to make these things beautiful.

    Here's a lovely embossed and printed example from the late 19th century that will make the germphobes scream in horror:
    {{!gwi}}

    A very rare embossed "elephant trunk" toilet (the drain is in the front rather than the back) from around 1905:

    A transfer-printed early Victorian toilet:

    Or embossing AND transfer decoration:

    And a somewhat exotic shape with hand painting:

    I would LOVE to have high-tank toilets in my circa 1900 house but they are just SO expensive! Dig this corner model:
    {{!gwi}}

    Depending on cashflow at the time, I might splurge on this code-compliant repro of a 1910 toilet:
    {{!gwi}}

    I LOVE that console sink on the filigree-metal frame in the fourth row down, two photos to the left of the pillbox toilet (code-compliant repro of 1920s toilet - IIRC Eljer was the only manufacturer of pillbox toilets at the time, but the storm's mucking with the mental database)... I would do any number of evil things for that! LOL Quite spendy though. Here's a sink from 1886 that I think is an absolute hoot:

    More and more companies are phasing out/cutting back on attractive non-ADA-height/"comfort" height toilets, which is a distinct drag. I am a short person with a long torso and short legs - my toes just touch the floor on an ADA-height toilet! I put one in my previous house (Toto Whitney) and ended up really disliking it, but I did learn my lesson to always wear the flattest possible shoes when toilet shopping. :-)

    (Why do adults use the word "potty" when talking to people older than kindergarten age?)

  • 17 years ago

    Why does this bathroom look soooo familiar? I feel like I have seen if before? Or a bathroom very, very similar? Maybe in a famous decorating magazine?

    Its a public restroom. I don't think anyone would really decorate at home like this. Would they?? I mean would they??

    {{!gwi}}

    Ceramic painted toilets and matching sinks available too! I believe that painted ceramic bathroom fixtures like these are made in Mexico.

    {{!gwi}}

    Made in Italy.

    Guitar toilet seat. I have no words.

    You can even buy toilet stickers to decorate your toilet! Unfortunately the Amazon site that sells them say they are currently sold out. Check Back! They have more styles!

  • 17 years ago

    Johnmari, that "elephant toilet" that you mention, is what I was referring to that they have most common in Germany. The drain is in the front and there is a dry "shelf" in the back of the bowl.

    {{!gwi}}

    And speaking of elephants.........Elephant in the room. Needs vinyl tape to hide.

    Learning curve:
    {{!gwi}}

    That bites:

    Apparently the cunning plan to train the cat from not drinking out of the toilet failed:

    Hey! A chrome toilet seat to go with the stainless steel toilets. Cool. I mean COLD.
