Prep / Bar Sink selection

Somewhat early in our kitchen remodel and am looking for ideas/pictures of stylish and cool Prep or Bar sinks.

Thanks

Have you checked the Finished Kitchens Blog? There are so many kitchens to look at, many with prep sinks and a few with bar sinks.

One comment...bar sinks do not usually make good prep sinks. A bar sink is usually small and shallow while prep sinks are usually almost as deep as a main sink and, to be functional, at least 12" in each direction...bigger is better. Our prep sink is 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" (with one corner cut off) and it's just big enough to work in...I would definitely not want it any smaller! If you ask here, you will find that most people who put in a bar sink for a prep sink use it as an "ice bucket" at parties and that's about it!

    buehl-

I am interested that you mention that anything less than a 15"x15" isn't functional for a prep sink. My main layout hangup is the size of the sink (and thus the sink base), and whether to locate in right next to the range (30" deep base cabs) or at the end of the range wall run (4.5"-5" away). What size sink base did you use? Also what sink did you use?

I am doing soapstone counters, and was thinking about doing a soapstone prep sink. Haven't really seen those, only the large apron front main sinks (which we are doing also)

    Thanks!

I was originally going to go w/the Ticor S705 prep sink...it's 10-3/4" x 13". My KD discouraged me from going with it b/c it was less than 12" wide, telling me it wouldn't be easy to work in. I took her advice and looked around more. I found the sink I now have and really liked it b/c of the cut off corner...since our sink is partly in the peninsula I thought it would put the faucet & water a little farther away from those seated at the peninsula.

Once I started working in my prep sink, I realized how right my KD was...and I now even go so far as to say that anything less than 15" would be too small! [Note: there's now a Ticor sink that's a little bit better...S805. It's 13" x 16-1/2" but I still think it's too narrow!]

BTW...the seat next to the wall has become a computer station! My father and now DS have taken it over as "the" spot for their laptops! (My parents visit now & then and my dad spends a lot of time playing games on the computer! He's almost 80 years old...don't tell me anyone is too old for a computer! And, my 73 year old mom uses it even more and to do many more things than my father does!)

Sorry...missed the questions in the middle!

Our sink base is a 36" corner sink base. If we had uses a "straight" base, we would have needed an 18" sink base.

Our sink is the Kohler K-3345 Undertone® Five-Sided Undercounter Kitchen Sink.

    Overall Dimensions: 17-1/2" x 17-1/2"
    Interior/Bowl Dimensions: 15-3/4" x 15-3/4"
    Basin depth: 7-1/2"

Our prep sink is approx 37" away from our cooktop. It's a great space for prepping since I prefer to prep b/w the sink and cooktop. If needed, I can overflow onto the peninsula to the right of the sink or the 30" counter on the other side of the cooktop. Our refrigerator is on the end of the peninsula on the other side of a 32" path b/w the peninsula and fridge (tight, btw!)

We have an 16" round prep sink in an 18" sink base cabinet:

I agree with Buehl; you'll want to locate the prep sink so that you have a nice prep area between it and your range.

buehl- So are you happy with the 37" btwn the range and the sink? One of my 3 main "missions" for my remodel is to have enough space for prep btwn the sink and range. Currently I have less than 24" and it drives me nuts. I will be doing 30" deep cabs, and at the moment I could have btwn 36" and 48" of space between the two, depending on what size cabinet I go with on the other side of the range.

If I were to put the sink directly next to the range, it has been suggested that I could use the faucet as a pot filler (or actually use a pot filler for the sink as well). If I did this, would I have enough room in front of teh sink to work since the cabs will be 30" deep? Or should I just keep them spaced apart (3-4 feet isn't that far to move a pot full of water).

Also, say I went with a sink that would fit in an 18" cabinet- would a trash can pullout work, since I am getting the deeper cabs?

Personally, I would not put the prep sink right next to the range. You need work room for both the range & sink...preferably on both sides, especially the range.

I find the 37" a good size. I had 24" in my old kitchen b/w the main (only) sink & range and it was definitely not enough room! In effect, I also had the situation of no space on the other side of the range b/c it had become the message center/drop zone. It meant that when if I was prepping in the 24" b/w sink & range, I had no place to put things I took out of the oven or off the range top...I ended up trying to find space on the table or across the kitchen on the short leg of the "L".

I wanted to eliminate all of that so I now have usable room on both sides of the cooktop and a prep sink!

Do you really need a pot filler? I can slide a pot across the counter if I want...but it's so close to the cooktop that I don't mind the 1 or 2 steps to b/w the cooktop & sink! Work space, IMHO, is much more important!
