Kitchen distribution ideas needed

Hi everyone!

I'm on the process of building my home, and the kitchen is still the big debate.

The usual kitchen distributions do not seem to fit here. Also, I cannot move or change any walls.

All and any ideas are most welcome! (click on thumbnail for larger image)

I clicked on it late last night & all I saw was a larger version of that floor plan. Clicked it just now & got a larger version of that floor plan.

Maybe you have a bug in your 'puter, Fava?

    try clicking on it twice..

did you also notice this at the bottom..

"get link code for this image.
advertise here at 10c CPM and get mad clicks!"

might just be the hosting site.. and not marky45 that is trying to pull a fast one..

thou im not sure how to respond to marky's question if there is one based on that image.. or what "kitchen distribution" means? so would be happy to help Marky if marky wants to come back and expand upon the question?

    Hi everyone

Not sure about the unapropriate links/adverts that the hosting site displays (imagevenue). I'm really not that knowledgeable of how to embed an image, so I embedded the code the site provided me.

Expanding more on my question - I've been cracking my head on what to do with this kitchen space and I'm at a dead end. What I would appreciate is an opinion: if this was your kitchen area, what would you do with it? As mentioned - the only condition is that I cannot modify the walls and that we would really love the sink against the backyard window. You can suggest anything - I'm pretty open at this point!

Marky...perhaps you should switch photo hosting sites...try PhotoBucket.com, Flickr.com, or Snapfish.com. There have never been problems that I'm aware of with any of these.

To be honest, if your site has even a hint of that type of material, I will not visit it...even for kitchen pictures! You need to understand that many of us have children and we don't want any hint of this on our computers. Those sites also often "host" viruses as well...and we don't want to expose our computers to any known possible threats...especially if we haven't backed up our data in the past day or so! No, we can't protect our children or ourselves completely, but where there's a known "threat", it's smarter to avoid it.

And I'm sorry, but the picture I see here is too small for me to work with.

But...please don't give up...try another photo hosting site or post a bigger picture....we really do want to help you!

hi Marky, I took the liberty of putting your picture on tinypic, a more reputable free image hosting site. You can try using that in the future; they don't do the advertising/chat/revenue thing.

Here it is, so nobody has to click anywhere at all:

Is the kitchen window counter height?

Marky...I think we need more measurements so we can see what will fit where... We can give you very general advice, like

Be sure you have 42" (~1.07 m) aisles

Range/vent Hood should be 6" (15.24 cm) wider than your range/cooktop (and centered over the range/cooktop).

Be sure you have ample landing space around each appliance (range/cooktop, MW, ovens, refrigerator) and enough work room around your range & sink. Normal workflow is:

.....Refrigerator --> Sink --> Range/Cooktop or Oven or MW --> Dining Room
    then
.....Dining Room --> Sink & DW & Refrigerator (store leftovers)

Dishes, glasses, & flatware should be stored near the DW

Be sure none of your aisles are blocked by an appliance door.

    Etc.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But, to give you more specific advice, we will need more measurements and the answers to a few questions...

    A. What is the total length of the kitchen (top-to-bottom)? Right now, it shows 3.3m + an unknown wall length

    B. How wide is the window?

    C. How wide is the wall between the bottom wall and the door to the pantry?

    D. How wide is the wall between the bottom of the pantry door and the wall to the Laundry room?

    E. How long is the wall between the top wall and the Laundry Room door?

    F. How wide is the Pantry door?

    G. How wide is the Laundry Room door?

And...I know you cannot move walls or windows, but how far into the DR can the cabinets go?

    Other questions:

    • What are your goals? E.g., a lot of counter space, a lot of storage, seating in the kitchen (island? peninsula? table?), etc.

Do you bake? Do you want a coffee/tea/beverage center?
What appliances do you plan on having (helps to figure out work flow, work zones, and types of cabinets...upper/lower vs full height, etc.)

    • Range or Cooktop?
    • Single or Double or no Wall Oven?
    • Warming Drawer?
    • MW? (Advantium, drawer, OTR, countertop, built-in, shelf?)
    • DW? Standard or drawers? If drawers, 1 or 2?
    • Refrigerator CD or standard depth?
    • Vent Hood?
    • Other?

Sizes of desired appliances (e.g., 30" or 36" or 48" cooktop; 36" or 42" or 48" wide or other Refrigerator? Counter depth or standard depth refrigerator, etc.)

    ***** Very Important *****

    Is there anything you:

    • Can't live without?
    • Definitely don't want?
    • Would like if you can find a way?

This information is valuable for us to help you. It will also be valuable when you talk to your architect/builder and if you talk to/hire a Kitchen Designer.

OK....a rough draft. Since I don't have measurements, I'm not sure if this will fit, but I think it will...

I used common measurements to USA...yours may vary...another reason why we need your specific info!

Pantry...I don't suppose you could close off the Pantry door & enter via the Laundry Room (LR)? (LR door would have to swing in the other direction if you did that)

I'd rather have the DW on the other side of the sink so it isn't an aisle blocker, but you don't have any room for dish storage on that side. On the current side, there's a small upper cabinet, possible peninsula storage, and storage or trash pullout on the other side of the sink. If you keep the aisle b/w the peninsula & DW at least 48" (1.22 m), I think you'll be OK.

Hmmmmm...maybe the DW would work on that side, now that I think of it...just stand in front of the sink and reach over to the left to put things away. It would also put the dishes/glasses/flatware closer to the DR. Yes...let's move the DW to the other side!

This gives you plenty of workspace & landing space around your appliances. It also protects the range from the traffic coming in/out of the kitchen, especially the laundry room traffic! (The peninsula directs traffic away from the range.)

The peninsula is in a perfect place to "stage" food from the kitchen to the DR...straight from the range or MW to the peninsula to the DR. For roving snackers, they can access the MW and Refrigerator without getting underfoot of the people working in the kitchen.

If desired, people can hang out on the DR side of the peninsula and visit without interfering with the kitchen work. If you have enough room for a 12" to 15" overhang you could add a seat or two.

    Hello everyone!

First of all - thanks circuspeanut for helping me with the pic. I will no longer use that website.

Second - Thanks a bunch to buehl! I never expected this much help! I'm taking a good look at your drawings.

Small update: We decided to steal some space from the laundry room and give it to the kitchen. That way it forms an even rectangular shape. I also added the measurements you asked for, they are in this new pic:

    Replying to questions:
    - How far can the cabinets go into the DR? We'd rather have no cabinets in this area.
    - Goals: Have regular counter space and seating (2-3 people) in the island / peninsula. Storage - the big pantry will help a lot (also w/dishes)
    - Bake: We don't bake much, but think that the island space next to the cooktop/range is ideal
    - No beverage center needed.
    - Range/Cooktop: We're thinking of a slide-in range for an island. Cooktops are still kinda pricey.
    - Oven: Preferably in the range - same as above... in-walls are pricey!
    - Warming drawer: Meh.
    - MW: Shelf
    - DW: Next to sink, 24" (as in your second draft!)
    - Fridge: top freezer, regular depth.
    - Vent hood: Yes
    - Other: Nothing too fancy, nor shiny. Just a feelgood, work-sensible kitchen.
    - Sizes: range 30" w/4 burners and oven, fridge top freezer, standard depth. DW: 24"
    - Can't live without: Sink facing the backyard / island or peninsula
    - Don't want: Range/cooktop facing a wall. Nor rats ;)
    - Would like: Kitchen as a social area that integrates the dining room as we cook/eat/drink/have fun
    - Pantry: we'd like to keep the door as it is.
    - Measurement: We're using metric as we live in Costa Rica. A VERY VERY NICE kitchen will go at around $5,000 a FANTASTIC one at $12-15k!
    - And please: Don't spend too much time on this. We don't want you to lose sleep...

    Thanks!

    Marky
