Refacing is only an inexpensive choice if you DIY. If you pay a company, especially one of the chains to do it, it will often be more expensive than buying all new cabinets---with less than stellar results. And you don't have the opportunity to tweak your layout or have the newer sturdier drawer glides, or the newer more durable varnishes, etc. You pay all of the money of a complete kitchen replacement remodel without any of it's benefits.

Thanks, we would love to have all new kitchen cabinets, but we have granite countertops that we are not planning to replace, and are also not ready to deal with a major kitchen reno right now.

We cannot refinish the existing cabinets as they are some type of wood laminate (thermafoil?). Not sure if painting our cabinets is an option but would actually be our preference vs. refacing.

You can do what I am, I'm in the process of replacing the doors with real wood. And getting some paint for the nooks and crannies to blend better so they don't show glimpses of white. I just ordered yesterday. For 1500 i got all the hinges, 21 doors 5 drawer fronts, a big sheet of veneer to cover the end cabs, toe kick etc and some soft close gizmos.
