kitchen cabinets

Has anyone seen a lyptus kitchen? We have looked at Medallion, Koch, Kemper, Quality and Dura Supreme. Does anyone know how the guts of these various lines compare? I am drawn to Dura Supreme lyptus in Auburn. I have recently been influenced to do more checking under the hood, so to speak, and not to make emotional decisions solely based on the "pretty factor".

Our kitchen is medium to small by today's standards. I worry about the darkening of the wood over time; I have heard conflicting reports of how much it darkens. Does anyone have first hand experience in how lyptus ages?

The sample looks gorgeous; grainy like walnut or mohogany; very rich looking. I heard someone complain that lyptus widely ranges in color. My thoughts are that many woods have a considerable range except for maple.

I have not priced our the Dura Supreme lyptus yet. But if the price is within the scope of possibility, I am leaning toward pulling the trigger unless someone talks me out of it. It is, however, a few shades darker than I originally planned on. And that is why I worry about the darkening with age factor. The wood grows quickly in South America and is therefore considered to be "green"; but I also hear that that is a stretch. So maybe it is "green-ish". And it is very hard; harder than maple but a lot more interesting to look at. Please, if you are familiar with this line or can contribute to any of my questions or comments, it would be welcome. I am getting a bit pressure to decide in order to start gutting the room.

Valentineee, Are you in the Puget Sound area? I know there are a lot of states with a town called Auburn like we have. If yes, I have another option for you to consider. I looked seriously at Dura Supreme and then went custom, for way less money. About 50% less.

No, I live in the Chicago area. I looked to save some money and searched for a custom cabinet maker but could only find companies that do custom work for large business properties. I figured that is the cost of living in a large metropolitan area; why would anyone want to waste their time building kitchen cabinets when they could do a boardroom or lounge or reception area and not have to deal with a home owner. I did not try to contact the cabinet makers; I am sure they would be way out of my ballpark. However, you prompted me to edit the subject of my posting. Thank you for your consideration.

We just had Dura Supreme cabinets installed. The perimeter cabinets are painted maple and the island is glazed cherry. I saw the lyptus and it is really pretty.

As far as the Dura Supreme brand, one of the main reasons I chose it was because the cabinet shop that we purchased them from was incredible; I knew from the first appointment that no detail would be overlooked. They also had Kemper, but the painted finish is not comparable to Dura Supreme.

The price for Dura Supreme was initially more than we wanted to spend, but after getting probably 6-7 quotes, we realized that Dura Supreme was a decent price. They were less than Brookhaven (Wood Mode) and Omega Dynasty. They were more than Wellborn, and about the same as Decora.

We are very happy with the cabinets and they look amazing. There were no problems with delivery and everything is fine so far.

    Good luck!

Valentineee, I'd be really surprised if a city your size didn't have custom cabinet makers specializing in residential. Seattle is pretty cosmopolitan and we have quite a few. Here are some sources I used to find the custom guys here: general contractors who do residential work, friends and neighbors who have re-done their kitchens, independent kitchen designers, appliance salesmen, and my brother who's a GC. There were also quite a few on Craig's list but I had so many I didn't turn to any of them.

I'm so glad I went custom, and for significantly less $ than the comparable but-not-quite-as-good quality semi-custom line. Now that we're in the process it's so convenient to have little adjustments made. My cabinet guy can build any way I want, and he's all about customer service and quality.

My cabs are Aristocratic. The dealer I got them from had a beautiful lyptus kitchen on the show room floor (San Francisco). I was considering lyptus but my husband really preferred the cherry. He thought it looked a little too modern for our 1916 house.

If you have an Aristocratic dealer in your area, pick up a brochure - they have a nice pic in their glossy brochure.
