Peninsula

Hi,

I have an odd sized kitchen. It has a corner sink which i dislike. So I will add a peninsula to it and remove one current side of counter. Sink will be in peninsula, cooktop parallel to the sink. Does anyone have a peninsula, and it's distance to the other parallel counter with cooktops is only 3 feet? Will that work with 1 or 2 more future cooks in the kitchen with my kids grow up? Thank you for your feedback!

Do you have a drawing of your idea (free-hand is fine)?

Are you creating a "U" or a dead-end galley (only two sides w/wall at the end and no cabs/counters)? Are there other alternatives for your layout?

How long will the peninsula be? The side where the range is?

Without more to go on, I can only speak in general terms, but think about it...you will have a narrow 3' aisle b/w the sink and range, can you imagine three normal adult-sized people fitting in the space back-to-back? I would think it would be very tight....

Can't figure out how to upload a drawing here... It will be "II" shape, with the left "I" be a 84" peninsula, the right "I" is the counter against the wall ~160" (where cooktop is). The isle in between is almost 4'. One end of "II" is a wall. I'm thinking not to put counter there due to the space.

There are other alternative, which is no peninsula, with is the current "L" shape. I'm trying to get a center island but the space is too limited. So I'm compromising with a peninsula. Thank you for your help.

The "Read Me" thread contains information on how to post pictures. Scroll down to the "Posting Picture" topic.

It sounds like you're planning a dead-end galley. Is the range centered on the wall? What you don't want to do is trap yourself in the "U" space. So, I don't recommend putting the DW on the outside, I'd put it on the dead-end side of the sink. I'd put your trash pullout on the "outside" side of the sink or on the range wall. I'd also place your range so you're not butt-to-butt with someone working at the sink when you're at the range. You also don't want to have the DW opening into the back legs of someone at the range...not just b/c of the "ouch" factor, but if they take a step back with a pot of boiling water to turn to empty at the sink, you don't want to trip over the DW door.

How close to 48" is "almost 4'"? If you want 2 or 3 people working in the "U" area, the wider the aisle the better. Are you planning seating at the peninsula? How much overhang? With a cleanup sink on the peninsula, I strongly recommend 18" (24" if it were a cooktop or range).

I'd really like to see your space...windows, etc. plus what appliances you are planning.

    Is it something like this?

The trash is on the range wall to maximize cabinet space on the peninsula. You could put a 9" cab (trays?) + 18" trash pullout next to the sink.
