Were you planning on putting stools there? or just a lean on it conversation type bar? 6" would be fine if you just want people to lean up against it from the other side of the peninsula, but the recommended distance for counterheight stools is 15" and I wouldn't go any less than 12"

I guess the real question is, do you want it functional? If you do, you'll need, according to NKBA Guidelines, 12" for bar height & 15" for counter height. Some people say they're OK with 10".

Do you have to have an overhang? Why not take those 6" and put in open shelves? They could be used to display some nice items, store small books, etc. I think 6" shelving would be more functional than 6" overhang.

If you're dead set on an overhang, then just don't expect it to be a comfortable place to sit at...even if you do get those backless stools. And, if it's on an aisle, expect anyone sitting there to block the aisle.

Thanks for your response! I am not looking for a true bar where someone can eat. Just a place to sit while the other person is cooking. I would probably just get a barstool.

I wanted an island in a small kitchen, so my base is 22" deep and the overhang is just 9". It's primarily a kids' snack spot and hang-out-with-the-cook spot, not a dedicated eating area. I wouldn't want it any smaller than that.

I didn't angle off the end of the bar, I angled off the whole end of the peninsula because it is in an isle way. The peninsula is on a 45° angle from the regular counter. Under the angled off end, there will be a small open shelf for decorative items. The cabinet guy is building it now.
