question about tile backsplash over shelf support

Greetings, I'd like to put a "floating" metal shelf over my cooktop. It will be adjacent to 3/4 inch under cabinet shelves an the flanking cabinets supported by brackets coming down from the cabinets.

The metal shelf is here.

You can't see the flat back support but it is 1.5 inches tall and extends between the brackets. It is made of 18 gauge steel which is 0.05 inches thick.

Does anyone know if the bottom of the back shelf support at 0.05 inches thick could be tiled over so that it is 3/4 to match the front edge and does not look thicker than the adjacent wood shelves? Or does the drywall have to be scraped so that the back support is flush with the drywall? The side brackets would have to stay but the visual line along the wall would be thinner top to bottom.

thanks in advance
