how to Photoshop a kitchen backsplash?

Our kitchen remodel is almost done. I just need to pick the backsplash....and so goes the dilemma that many of us have faced. I've prowled the internet for months, looking at pictures of backsplashed as wells as the FKB (so many times!) and I just can't seem to commit. Although I have access to Photoshop, I am an admitted novice. If anyone could post the basic instructions for Photoshoping backsplashes onto pictures of a kitchen, I would greatly appreciate it!

I would say the easiest way would be to open up a picture of your kitchen as well as a picture of the backsplash.
- Using the marquee tool (dashed box icon or keyboard shortcut m), click-drag from top left to bottom right to outline the area of backsplash you want to copy.
- Copy the backsplash (control/command-c)
- On your kitchen image, paste the backsplash (control or command v)
- you can use the move tool (arrow icon) to move it into place.
- Pasting again will make another copy of the backsplash. You can move this one as well.
Note: Each paste will create a new layer, so in order to go back to a previous copy to move/adjust, find it's corresponding layer via Window -> Layers or F7.

Thanks Shorts! That helps quite a bit. I've got it mostly covered, all except for the 'non-square' parts of the backsplash. Those layers were confusing me before I asked for help. I think I was making it more complicated that it really is :)

Another way to do it so you can easily try multiple types of backsplashes:

1. Duplicate the kitchen photo as another layer so you have a background and layer that are the same

2. Using the magnetic selection tool trace the wall under your cabinets on the top layer. Once selected, delete what you selected.

3. Copy a section of the backsplash you like and paste it onto your kitchen photo.

4. Move that backsplash layer down so it is between the two kitchen photo layers. Note: you may have to duplicate the tiles to get a big enough section to act as backsplah (best to do this in its own psd file)

If you want to try a different backsplash you simply copy another backsplash onto your kitchen photo and move the layer so it is above the other backsplash but below the layer of the kitchen with the wall cut out. This makes it easy because you can just slip in another backsplash without having to delete the others which allows you to easily flip back and forth between the various backsplashes.

The easiest way is to make a pattern of the tile photo you want to mock up. Just select the right area with the rectangular marquee, select make a pattern, and give it a name and save it. Then select the area you want to make the backsplash, and select paste into. You can then move it around the way you like in that space, and also scale it

You can check the pattern beforehand by opening a new document and filling it with the pattern. You can also copy that and use paste into to your selection.
