Another almost finished kitchen

last modified: 11 years ago

We are enjoying our new kitchen which was part of a whole house remodel. Not surprisingly, reading this forum helped tremendously and I have loved seeing all the finished kitchens. So here's ours!

{{gwi:1963775}}

Details:

European beech cabinets with walnut trim; custom made locally

Cumaru (Brazilian teak) floor

GE Monogram cooktop, oven & Advantium

Dacor downdraft

Frigidaire dishwasher

LG FD refrigerator (which is currently freezing my lettuce)

Broan trash compactor (which will have a stainless panel)

Kohler smart divide sink

Moen Showhouse Woodmere faucet

Giallo Ornamental granite

Emser 1x2 subways with Oceanside glass tile mosaics

Love the deep drawers. We have 30 inch deep counters on the sink and cooktop legs of the U; it is amazing how much the drawers will hold. Lazy susan is in the corner. Wine refrigerator is a free-standing one we owned. I was waiting until the copper backsplash showed up but that has been delayed and I just couldn't wait to share the photos. LOL

GORGEOUS!!! The wood on your cabs looks so satiny (and pretty, too!).

What a great kitchen! Your cabinets are wonderful with some sharp details, and they give you a ton of great storage. Love your stone, so sleek and rich. And I envy the view to your yard.

I love your cookbook storage. That is something I forgot to consider in mine. Now they are stacked in my foyer closet. The windows look great as does everything else.

Lovely! I'm glad to see someone else likes beech, I think it's a vastly underused wood. Lovely golden tones that are really set off by darker woods. My laminate cabs have a beechwood half-round trim all the way around each door, with a thin walnut strip inset, and I just love the two woods together.

Beautiful kitchen, and it should be stunning when you get your copper in!

Teak floor is a stunner. And everything goes together really well. Just beautiful. But then, so is that view.

How is the downdraft working? Would you recommend it? Do you do some high heat cooking?

And do you like the smart-divide sink?

    Considering both.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the kind words! We know that each and every kitchen is the result of a lot of thought, love and labor and it's always nice to be appreciated. VBG

Djdoggone, So far the downdraft is working well, perhaps not as well as a 'real' hood but I traded the hood for the view. I have only used the wok once and boiled a large pot of water to really test it and I think it is adequate. It's good with regular cooking. I'm sure that I'll occasionally have to clean the windows but it does seem to direct most of the cooking fumes/steam into the vent. How's that for waffling? It works for us so far. I do a fair amount of Asian cooking so time will tell. The sink is great because it fits my way of washing up. I tend to have a bowl or pot with soapy water and wash things from there rather than have a huge sink of hot water. It has worked well for large cookie sheets and other bulky items. My kitchen is a joy to cook in -- what more could you ask?

Forgot to mention that the space between the end of the peninsula and the pantry cabinet is 5 feet. Our cabinet maker suggested making it this size and I already like it. It will eliminate that bottleneck at the passageway.

Really beautiful! Would you have done the window behind the cooktop if you hadn't done 30" counters? Has it been difficult to keep the window free of grime? Any issues with heat on the trim? I know people do glass backsplashes all the time, but I get lots of negative comments when I mention putting my cooktop in front of a window, and even more when I say I want a window that is flush with the counter. Sigh...

Also, we're considering Braz teak floors. Are those stained at all? How are you liking them? Are they as hard as they say?

    Thanks!

Jraz wa, Hmmm, good question. I'm not sure because the deeper counters were at the same priority level for me so they were both going to happen. If they weren't this deep, I'm sure you'd do more window wiping. As it is, I don't need to clean the window any more often than about once a month -- and, yes, I'm cooking a lot. LOL There are a number of kitchens where they have bumped out the counters around either the sink or the cooktop so that might also be a possibility. I don't mean to be an evangelist for deeper counters, but do consider them if your space allows, both for extra counter and cabinet space. So far no problem with heat on the trim, probably because of the distance. Someone else on GW has a window over their stove and it is trimmed in bullnose tile which could answer that question too. You will get negative comments but, hey, it's your kitchen. I wouldn't have given up my view to the creek in the woods. Our architect did question me about the window and I knew I wanted it as long as there was no worries about the code.

Love the floors. They are not stained; this is the natural color. They are hard but will dent if you drop a screwdriver blade down on them! Ours were site finished with 'green' products. I was very impressed with the process and expected clouds of dust like we had when we had other floors refinished. They had everything set up to giant vacuums and it worked great. There wasn't even a film of dust on the walls or windows. There also were no fumes when they finished; amazing. We do love the color and warmth of the wood.
