Keep in mind people post when they have a problem. Seldom do people post to say everything is working just fine. I have a ge spacemaker microwave more than a year old and no issues.

I found this site two years ago, when most of the decisions were made. Oh, if I had found it sooner the remodel of our small kitchen would have been considerably different. That said, we had unprecedented good fortune all around and still so pleased.
I worried alot when I read on this site about my Monogram picks...had already had the cabinet order with a local cabinet maker but at that point had to hope for the best....end story, the same cooktop that you are considering has been wonderful, the double ovens and dishwasher all flawless.

I am looking at a G.E. range for DD. really want the slate, so I am off today to shop, good luck with your quest.

In our last house, we changed out all of the appliances for GE Profile and didn't have a problem with any of them.

You do have to take online reviews with a grain of salt. Most people will not spend the time to write a review if everything is working fine.

You also have to keep in mind that every manufacturer will have defects. Hopefully, those are no more than 1% of their production, but when they are making thousands of a product, that 1% can end up being a pretty big number.

I do look at consumer reviews but what I look for are patterns of particular problems. Those signal either design or quality control problems. I also try to find ratings for the particular model (or something close) that I am interested in.

In the end, you still have to cross your fingers and hope you didn't get a dud.

As far as customer service goes, it seems that you can find negative reviews about most any appliance manufacturer.

Had a GE OTR microwave. Broke just before 1 yr warantee was up. Got it fixed. But, they did something that made the fan incredibly loud. Had them back, was told "normal" (really? Because it didn't do that before you fixed it. "Oh, sorry, still normal"). Lived with it, swore not to replace with GE. Didn't...IMHO, not a great product (door cracked, stuff like that).

Why are you putting an OTR microwave in a cubby? That's going to waste so much space, it uses a bunch of extra space for the OTR venting system. AND you'll be paying way more for it. Why not a regular micro? Do you need the wall-mounting bracket or something? If so, they do make Over-the-counter micros (OK, I don't know if GE does. Because I won't buy a GE micro again :) )

We have GE Monogram range and OTR Advantium, love them both. I seem to remember while microwave shopping that one company basically makes all the microwaves (Sharp? Can't remember exactly which one).

Appliances (and salespeople) are a funny thing. Recently shopped for appliances for a new build. Past experience with GE was great - range (standard true temp ceramic cooktop) and MW. Salesman said GE MW were 'crap' and I just smiled. My last one we had for 14 years with never a lick of trouble. My range the same thing (although he didn't dog on the range they are rated well for reliability in cooking and he said as much). Our Maytag W/D that were supposed to be the last good machines produced before it all fell apart were serviced A LOT. Go figure!

FWIW - I feel like the whole process is a gamble. I have never read anything about GE dishwashers - ever almost as if they didn't exist and have had many people from different places NOT recommend them. I think it's kinda like cars. Chevy makes a van but never put any money into upgrading or keeping up with the industry but they offered one should you want it. I think appliance brands are the same way. They excel in what they want but offer the rest in case you are interested in a matched set.

We ended up going with KA. Almost feel nautious leaving the store since you spend a bunch of cash and it's a crap shoot as far as if you get 'the lemon' and 'they all only last 7-10 years anymore' anyhow. Good luck.

I've only had GE Spacemaker microwaves, (one OTR, one countertop/hanging) over the last 18 years, one in each kitchen and never had a problem with either.

I temporarily rented, then moved into this house and both had GE everything and the fridge in the rental would not hold the temperature. (although I think the kitchen design didn't provide adequate circulation ) and the range in the new house works fine but is falling apart fit and finish wise. These were all entry level though. My dad's had a GE fridge in the basement for 43 years that works great, but its very simple.

I feel like the simpler stuff is, the longer it is going to last but very little is simple anymore. If heard that GE is good currently better at things that heat up. (?)

I think GE is good for ranges and micros. I would not buy a GE fridge, DW or washer/dryer. Before remodel we had GE DW which died about 4 years in. The range and OTR MW no problems in 15 years. We bought them again with remodel last year....range and OTR MW...plastic coating on MW handle is peeling but. GE is replacing entire door free of charge.

I second joaniepoanie's comment. I've had 3 GE ranges during the past 25 years and have never had an issue with any of them. I wasn't happy with our last fridge, which was a GE nor with the GE dishwasher that came with our house when we purchased it.

I did tons of research before getting my GE Profile induction range this past Sept. Most of the reviews I came upon were very positive and a better ratio of good to bad than the other brands I looked at. So when Sears had a big sale I bought mine and just love it. I know its only been a few months so I can't say long term how things will go. But I have been putting it thru its paces big time and can't think of a single thing to complain about. I also feel the look of it has a better quality than some others I checked out.

I agree with JoaniePoanie for the most part. I think GE makes pretty good cooking appliances, but their DWs and some refrigerators aren't as good.

When we remodeled, our old GE Profile range (smoothtop/convection oven) was still going strong and we donated it to our church for a family in need. It was 13 years old and still worked and looked like new.

When we built in 1995, we started with a GE Profile DW that broke down twice in 5 or 6 years. We replaced it with a Maytag that was still working fine when we remodeled (we also donated the DW to our Church). I would never buy another GE DW.

As to refrigerators - it's a mixed bag. We had a GE Profile Refrigerator with a top freezer and ice dispenser in the freezer door. The ice dispenser constantly froze up. The GE repairman said it was a design flaw and that the only way to free it up was to take a hair dryer to it when it froze up. We stopped using the dispenser after a year or two. About 6 or 7 years down the road, the ice maker line developed a leak and we just shut it down - we made our own ice cubes for the next 7 or so years. The rest of the refrigerator worked fine, though, and the temperature control was pretty good - not perfect, but it was good enough.

When we remodeled, I looked around and decided on GE Profile for our cooking appliances (Cooktop, Trivection Double Ovens, and Warming Drawer), KitchenAid for our DW, and then waffled about the refrigerator. We finally took a chance and went with a GE Profile Refrigerator (FD, counter-depth, bottom drawer freezer) with water-only in the door (one of the few requirements/must-haves that my DH had). It's been over 5 years and so far the water dispenser and ice maker are still working. The temperature control isn't quite as good as the old refrigerator - we have to watch it. If I set it too cold, things in the back freeze. I like to set my refrigerator at 35 degrees, but have to use 37 so things don't freeze.

The cooktop, ovens, and WD are all fine - I particularly really like my ovens (which only come in Monogram now).

I don't know about the GE MWs as I've never had one. I have the Sharp MW drawer - and it's also still going strong. Previously I had a "Montgomery Wards Convection MW" that lasted for 20 years or so. Then we got a Sharp that lasted about 5 years. Then an Amana that was still working when we remodeled (we donated it to our Church). We took a chance on the Sharp MW drawer - and so far, so good.

When I redid my kitchen 2 years ago, I gave my 15 year old GE profile side by side regrigerator to a friend. It is still going strong. Not one service call in 17 years. I have been using my Profile wall oven and GE Advantium for the past two years and so far so good. Love using the probe for large meat items and the convection bake for mulitiple pans of cookies in the oven. Also love the versatility of the Advantium

The Profile dishwasher - not so much - just doesn't clean well at all and I'm currently on a hunt for something really quiet and good to replace it with even though it works it pretty much requires me to pre-wash before I put dishes in. I've tried the recommended detergent for the dw, I've tried putting things in dirty and use the enzyme cleaner and I've tried heavier and lighter loads and it still leaves a film. However it comes off real easy if I wet it after the dishwasher is done and just run a sponge over it. Never had this issue with the dishwasher at my old house which was a Kenmore.

Our GE profile electric cooktop has one element that the control no longer works on. Ie we can turn it on, but it stays on high.

My GE profile oven is working, but every recipe seems to take longer than the stated time for the same temperature. Just gotten used to that. The buttons on the control panel are all cracked and broken - they still work though, just doesn't look the best.

All of the above appliances were bought and installed in 2007.

Now my GE microwave has been going strong without any issues for 12 years now. It was a cheapie I bought at Walmart and it has been great.

Thanks for the info, everyone. This makes me feel pretty good about my cooktop choice, but uncertain about my fridge choice. My other option is to go with a 29 cu. ft. Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator. Does anyone have a good or bad experience with Whirlpool fridges?

What I'm trying to avoid is having a stainless refrigerator. I love the slate finish on the GE model, but I don't mind the black ice finish on the Whirlpool model either. But I also need to get a fridge that works, not one that just looks pretty. I have 2 VERY active young sons and I need a fridge that won't break with all the use they will give it.

I just replaced my 17 year old Kenmore/ Whirlpool frig, and only replaced it because it was damaged during the remodel.

Of course we don't know if current manufacturing is of the same quality as 2 decades ago, but I surely was happy with mine.

In my last house (purchased new in 1981) the builder appliances were GE. They were great- they were not the premium line either. At one point after about 5 years I needed a repair, and I remember the repair guy saying they don't make appliances like they used to..........and I think this is true even more so today. I try to make an educated decision- but also tend to agree it's a bit of a crap shoot. Recently had to replace refrigerator and ended up with a Kenmore. I think I really won't know how it is until a few years down the road. It had the features I wanted, the look I wanted, and the price was what I wanted as well.
The repair guys of today have said pretty much that there is no rhyme or reason as to the brands and reliability- so crap shoot it is.

Some general comments:
The appliance industry has been under quite a bit of change in the last two decades. Huge consolidations, relentless new product introductions that make reliability a guessing game. Plants moved off-shore or shuttered. Years ago when I entered the business, a design would have a 10 to 15 year life cycle. I would be surprised if it is more than 5 years now for ANY product.

That said, I have a GE space maker microwave oven still running fine after 15 years with just one minor issue. Once we hit too many buttons at once and it locked up. I thought for sure it was a goner, but simply depowereing it for 2 minutes and turning it back on brought it back to life. Overall, excellent if not exceptional value.

My GE Profile dishwasher just died after 15 years of service, I am told a pretty good run in the realm of dishwashers. The pump seal, made of a Buna-N material, finally started leaking. I could not get a new seal by itself, and the $150 pump housing was no longer available. Had they invested an extra $.50 and made the pump seal out of Viton it would likely still be running. Overall, good if not great value. The dishwasher was acquired for $329 in 1998.

I have never owned a GE refrigerator, but have been in the Louisville, KY, and Decauter, AL, plants and they were well run and had excellent staff in the early 90's. Again, two decades later companies can change incredibly! I'm not sure if either plant is still in business.

My overall perspective:
while some appliance players are focused on delivering long term value in long lasting machines, others seem to have thrown in the towel in favor of cutting edge aesthetics to make a quick sale, but at the cost of some mechanical reliability.

It can be a crap shoot as one poster noted above. What was working 15 years ago has likely been abandoned in favor of some new scheme and no true comparisons can be made anymore.

So I know this is many years later but in case anyone is still looking, STAY AWAY from GE appliances!! Bought a new range, fridge and microwave 8 months ago. The fridge compressor already went out, they had to fix it and took them 2 service calls before they figured it out. Teflon is already peeling on the griddle of the range and now today the microwave stopped working!!!!! I’m flabbergasted by just how terrible these appliances are. NEVER EVER EVERRRRRRR buy GE appliances.

I bought a 36 inch counter depth refrigerator. At 10 months it stopped working for no apparent reason. I have been trying to get GE to replace it for 4 weeks. They keep putting me on hold or telling me they'll call me back, which they never do. They changed 2 reports that said it was unrepairable and denied the claim. 4 weeks and no usable fridge. Arghhh.

I have a GE Profile Inbuilt refrigerator that has been broken for the last 3 weeks. I called GE Appliances to fix it which to 1 week. When they arrived said it needed parts and scheduled an appointment for a week later. I now here the parts are delayed for 1 month and was told to open a case and call. I have been calling for the past week waiting 40 minutes each time to no one answers the phone.

GE clearly is not what it used to be and I will never buy another GE appliance.

Very dissappointed in the lack of customer service and the products.

We have a GE stove and fridge purchase in 2018 , had the control board replaced on the stove within the first year and now it’s gone again, no warrenty on parts, what a ripoff... stove keeps going on and off on its own, been off now sence 12 pm yesterday. Fridge has the rubber coming off the door and don’t keep anything cool, never purchasing anything else from GE, piece of Garbage...

I had purchased GE dual Oven Advantium series. It worked great for 5 years and then the controller stopped working making both the ovens stop working. It took GE over 5 weeks to send out technicians to diagnose the problem. After diagnosis, the parts that needed replacement were out of stock for prolonged period of time, as in 2~3 months. My oven was out of service for almost 5 months.

Keep the post sale service in mind before you buy any appliance. For me, I would not recommend GE appliances to anyone.

The Most Unresponsive Company I have ever seen!

I bought the pair of freezer fridge to the tune of $12,000. After installing I noticed the frame hardware is bowed at the top. Not part of an install, but cam out of the box. I called GE and they sent me to the dealer. I went to the dealer to complain and his unit had the same issue! The dealer sent me back to GE. I had an unrelated problem with the fan shroud hitting the fan so they to send a GE tech to come and look at both. The tech said the trim piece at the top of the unit was too large causing it to bow out! It took weeks for the tech to submit pictures adding to the ones I sent. GE has giving me the runaround and I recently got off the phone with someone who should be fired from GE. She basically said if it's not functional, they won't warrantee it. I consider fitting in the cabinet functional, but she did not. She agreed to send out another tech, but made it clear that if he can't fix that's it. They will NEVER take back the unit. I found her attitude unbecoming of what GE used to be! She refused to accept that it was a manufactures defect and said is maybe was a one of! Who cares! I have an issue and they won't make it right. I would run from this company and its products. This is an attitude that must come from the top and they don't care about their customers. When you spend $12,000 on a product you would think you would get some better treatment!

GE appliances are not reliable. My refrigerator came with poorly designed hinges resulting in leaks that damaged the floor. It took nearly a year to get replacement redesigned hinges. Ice maker is a regular problem. The ovens failed. Broilers go out regularly. You will learn what error code F7 means after a few years. Also error code F0. Control panel replacement is about $450 plus labor. My second one just failed. The GE dishwasher was replaced under warranty, but it took a while. GE Service is a joke. RealIy. I now use an independent repairman.

The glass on my GE Profile oven door cracked four months after purchase. Part has been on order . . .

My GE refrigerator is only 5 years old and was not cooling and I called the authorize service center and what I got in return was a bill for $125 and a half done diagnostic and a another estimate for $325 and told futher test was required. Very unreliable repair service. This is a ripoff. The name of the authorize service is Elite Appliance service.

This is my second GE fridge. I love it. No issues. When I had my kitchen renovation done a few years ago I got a new Samsung range, a new LG dishwasher ( both of which I love too) and kept my GE fridge❣️

I got my mom's GE gas range around 30 years ago after she passed. The only issue was the heating element for the oven went out and my friend replaced it. Then several years went by and it happened again. I decided to buy another GE stove/range in April of 2024, So far I like it but still haven't used the built-in griddle in between the burners that goes down the middle of the top of the stove. Two complaints. It didn't come in the almond color that is the color of my refrigerator. I don't like the stainless steel that I had to settle on. Hate having fingerprints. And the other complaint is the volume of the timer. I can barely hear it when I'm in the other room. When I called GE to ask and then complain, she told me this model doesn't have a volume control on it like the others. And that I should set the timer on my phone or bring my small kitchen timer in the other room with me. The timer on my old range was plenty loud and it didn't even has anything where I could control the volume. So, I hope GE reads this and makes a change on this model to be able to increase the volume--or just make the volume louder! Numbers are: JBGS66REKSS. And not everyone is a fan of stainless steel! And white just wouldn't work next to my almond-colored fridge.

DO NOT buy GE appliances! Disappointing Reliability Across All GE Appliances!

I purchased 5 GE appliances (Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Stove, Oven & Microwave), and all installed in late 2019. Unfortunately, every single one has required repair, including my high-end GE Profile counter-depth refrigerator, which has experienced consistent cooling failures since 2022.

Despite multiple service visits, the same refrigerator issue has recurred over and over, indicating a defect that was never properly fixed. The time, cost, and frustration involved—especially with a premium-priced appliance—have been extremely disappointing.

Based on my experience, I would NEVER purchase GE appliances again and cannot recommend them to others.

GE sold the appliance division to Haier, a Chinese company in 2016. GE has nothing to do with appliances now and I sure wouldn't buy them. This is why your GE appliances are junk CV W.

GE gave Haier the right to use the GE name until 2056.

GE is a conglamerate. They sold the entire appliance division to Haier. The people who make GE appliances are the same people who made GE appliances before it was sold.

Their main appliance production facility is still the Appliance Park in Louisville KY. Which is a unionized facility using the same workers and engineers they used before.

The reason GE appliances was sold is because GE Financial ran it into the ground. GE appliances existed only to fuel GE deferred interest financing. They invented planned obsolescence in order to drive more financing arrangements. When they spun off GE Capital as Synchrony bank, there was no need to keep the appliance division.

I know several people at the GE appliance park and they believe that quality is improving. Whether it actually does or not, who knows.
