Shutters

We bought this late 70's-built lakefront house near Tallahassee. We love the spaciousness of the house and it sits on 350' of lakefront. All the windows have these wooden shutters. I like the shutters but they are light oak colored. Now days, most trim is white. I hate the idea of painting all the shutters white if I change the other trim to white. What do you think of leaving all the trim light oak colored? Also, suggestions for decorating the great room. The kitchen, dining and living room all flow together in one giant room.

Personally I'd sell the shutters on Craigslist and install top down/bottom up shades (if you have need of privacy from the lake) with fixed drapery panels between the windows for some softness and color. May I assume this is the room as previous owners decorated it? Are you buying new furniture or bringing your own? Can we see pics once your furniture is in for better input?

Just because white trim is in doesn't mean you can't keep the wood if you like it. I think you can work around the trim and shutters if you want. I rather like yellow, jewel and mid-tones with wood trim--somettimes white just makes a room look disconnected.

In a room this big,the baseboards are hardly noticable anyway. Most of what I can see is radiators.

Thanks for the input. This will be out week-ender until we can retire (about 4 years). The decor is what the previous owners had. The house came completely furnished. We can live with it until we retire and sell our current home, then redecorate. Just found "houzz" to get some ideas.

Nice not to have to furnish a whole other house. I do like that white couch and the pencil leg tables--very mid-century modern. You have a lot of time to gradually bring in your own stuff and figure out what direction you want to go for decor. No use stressing over decor of a second home quite yet--take care of the structural stuff and the kitchen and such while you have the income.

I also have a place on a lake and lived for many years with light oak trim around the windows, I found that the oak "stops your eye" and instead of focusing on the view, you look at the windows. Last year, I bit the bullet and painted the trim the same colour as the walls.; I couldn't be happier, the view is much better, you see the lake and not the windows. However, at night, the windows become mirrors, so if you need privacy or don't like looking into the dark you may want a window treatment.
