Here's my kitchen layout!

The image is from the first KD that came out. The measurements are accurate but I don't like the design. Not nearly enough counterspace or cupboards which is the main complaint with our current kitchen!

There is a bump-out where the stove is drawn is because of a built-in buffet in the dining room to the west. The south door leads outside. The north door to a hallway. The larger island she drew represents were we currently have a full wall separating our tiny kitchen from our future eating area.

She gave us bench seating which was an idea I mentioned in passing but really wasn't on my list of must-haves (my communication error, I'm sure). The window on the east wall will eventually be converted to a door to lead into the backyard patio. All other windows are not movable.

I hope this makes sense!

Grrr, what did I do wrong with posting the picture?

    Our must haves:
-Cabinets up to the ceiling topped with crown molding to mimic the rest of our house
    -White cabs with some glass
-Style to fit our Craftsman house
-a stove vent hood of some kind. We prefer a stylish one, but space may only allow us a microwave vent over the stove
    -a broom closet cabinet
-apron front sink with double bowls, ceramic
    -adequate food prep area
-room for a full-size DW (right now we have an 18")

I want it to feel light and clean, but still cozy. I want it to remain true to the style of the rest of the house, so nothing overly modern.

I would say our budget is about 30K, but lower is definitely better.

Spice cabinet, a place for our Kitchen Aid stand mixer, pull-out trash and recycling, some really great way to organize our pots and pans!

here's a picture of our kitchen now. What you don't see is the fridge on the wall opposite of the sink. That's it. TINY! you can see why we need more cabs/counters

Sorry, I wish I could edit my other posts instead of the serial posting. Probably breaking all the etiquette rules of the forum

You are right to be concerned about this design. You'd be doing a lot of laps around that tiny island, which doesn't offer enough workspace to make up for its inconvenience.

In your must haves, can you also tell us about your family and cooking style and needs? Do you bake? Entertain? Want room for multiple workers, now or in the future? Will you have teens and friends using it and milling about?

I hate the mini island. I have no idea what that was about. I want one bigger island. I don't know if it should have barstools for an eating area or just stick to having a table. We've also tossed around the idea of putting the fridge against the north wall with some tall cabs to make it look built-in.

We want to keep the general L shape of the old kitchen but beyond that we're flexible. We don't know if should be white like the cabinets or another color.

    Anyway, to answer your questions:
    - DH and I both like to cook and a few times a week are in there trying to cook together, right now we can't
    - we bake some, but would do more when we have more room
    - we like to entertain
    - no children yet (we're newlyweds) but planning on/hoping for 2 of them in the next few years

Is photobucket the only one that works? Shutterfly appears to be down this morning.

We've had 2 more KDs in to check out the space and haven't heard back from them yet. One is a custom builder, the other works for an independently-owned home improvement store. I talked to a neighbor who received quotes from the same 3 businesses and he ended up going with the custom builder. Our first quote for the above design I don't like came in at 16K for the cabinets (Holiday Kitchens) which I thought was high considering there isn't nearly the space we wanted. The model cabinets were beautiful though!

You can use Flickr, Photobucket, or any other photo hosting site or anyplace where you can store a pic online and allow others to access it. The advantage of a photo hosting account is that you can store pics in albums and let others see them w/o having to post individual pics. Also, sometimes when I cannot read a layout posted here, I can see it more clearly at the point of origin (the photo hosting site)...assuming the album is public, of course.

hmm shutterfly should work and I thought I followed the directions step by step in the FAQ...

Anyway - any design suggestions now that you know the basic layout of the kitchen? I need help thinking outside of the box because no matter how I try to configure it, everything doesn't quite fit.
