Serendipitous countertop

Hi everyone; haven't posted in awhile and have never tried pics; if this is too small I'm sorry - I will try again! Anyway, choosing countertops has been the biggest emotional roller coaster in this construction - I would get emotionally attached, only to find it didn't fit into our dwindling budget, or I felt I was making a necessary compromise that would haunt me every day I looked at it. Turns our out cabinet installers (we assembled cabs) do concrete countertops. I'd never considered them, but with the dupont/cove edge and the substantial 2 inch width, I love them! The price was right and honestly, now that I have them, this would've been my choice, looks-wise, had my budget been unlimited. Seeing them this week was a welcome, wonderful surprise in what's been an extremely stressful build. Just wanted to share that sometimes things work out just as they should. Happy Holidays! More pics in 2010...

Beautiful - the edge treatment is very elegant and timeless.

Those are very nice. You rarely see a more traditional look with concrete--it looks great.

How nice! I've never seen that edge with concrete. It's beautiful. I can't wait to see your kitchen finished. Good luck!

Wow! How'd they get it that color? I've only seen gray/brown etc.
    That's great looking!

Thanks everyone; I'm really pleased with them; hadn't considered concrete because I hadn't seen it used in a traditional design. I'd decided on a dupont edge in a granite, but really liked the more monotone look of quartz but couldn't afford it; saw their color samples of concrete and this concrete is their basic "white"; they can mix most any color. The dupont edge I wanted wasn't ideal for a 2 inch countertop, which is their standard, so I researched and found a dupont cove edge which I absolutely love. The mix of the refined edge in a more utilitarian material sort of relaxes the whole traditional scheme, if that makes sense.

I'm curious, carolinesmom--what did they tell you about maintenance?

Wow - that's beautiful - it give concrete a whole new feel.

    Writersblock,
I will need to wax and polish probably every 1-2 months. I honestly had not researched concrete to the depths I had my other decisions; I tend to run big decisions like this into the ground. I have no delusions that it will be maintenance free, like quartz, and I'm sure that generous sloping edge is more prone to fracture than say, an eased straight edge, but these fabricators have done excellent work in the other things they've done during our construction and are well established. The concrete is in five sections, and I opted for a standard color offering, so if I did need to repair/replace a section in the future, I wouldn't be out of luck. I sure hope I don't though. Any other maintenance tips from those in the know would be welcome.

Thanks. It's pretty enough that it's worth any upkeep, I think.

Wow, I had no idea concrete could look like that--beautiful!
