A couple sets of bunk beds!

If one is a twin over queen and the 4b and 6g year olds shared the queen, then that could sleep everyone. But then the decor is harder to split

Bunk beds and a trundle bed may work temporarily. The older ones will soon need privacy. The bunk beds can be split when the two rooms are split into boys' and girls' rooms.

But I must say... I think teenagers will need separate spaces at some point from the younger kids.

The toys/games room will probably have to be sacrified to hold either the smaller children or the teens. Temporary fixes will have to allow for bedding to move from one room to another. In this case, the games room will eventually become someone's bedroom = moveable furniture.

This is a temporary residence while our new house is being built. Then lots of space and privacy. So for 2-3 months I need to make this as best as possible.

Both the oldest boy (12) and girl (14) hate all the younger kids toys cluttering up their rooms so the play/game room seemed like a good idea. Also this allows for fewer interruptions when doing homework or hanging out with friends since the younger ones can have play dates in the playroom rather than fighting for space in the "girls" or "boys" room.

And by all of us using a single large dressing room/walk-in closet all the clothes are kept orderly and neat, so that typical teenage clutter-trap is stopped. Outfits are chosen the night before so there is plenty of time to dress in the morning without fuss.

Any design/decorating ideas? I need to do this ASAP

Friday: paint (Ben Moore, sherwin Williams and Home Depot)
Saturday : furniture
Sunday: Windows and decor

I would make the best of a situation and not worry too much about decor think of it as a long sleepover it will teach the teens some patience with the youger ones. Maybe the teens can find a different place to do homework. If you are planning on bunks in the new house get them but if not I would not spend the money as for windows som roller blinds Take the closet door off take the cloths out and make a fort for the youngest to sleep in that would free up some floor space .

I would not even decorate, let them bunk up ,hang out ,sleep wherever however,make it fun...and if the little ones drive the teenagers crazy let the little ones sleep with you for a while.If this is truly temporary just make it fun,like camping.

Construction is notorious for delays, so I was hedging my bets. Also to use this as a testing ground for colors, styles, etc. for the new house.

I will take your advice keep it simple and use what I have for the bedroom and not spend too much time or money. Paint, curtain rods, bookshelf I already own for a room divider. Door off closet, coats out, girls vanity in there. Boys vanity next to door.

We are certainly having a playroom at the new place, so I'm concentrating on that room in the apartment because the furniture and toys will move directly into their new room.

Given that this is a very temporary situation and that you will be taking the bed furniture with you, try just letting each kid pick out their own bedding at Target. That will add enough color. If they change their minds in a few months, it's not a big investment.

I suggest you leave the walls alone. Any paint you put up will have to be painted over when you leave. When construction is finished on the new house, the last thing anyone wants to do when moving is repaint a rental house back to its original color.

The closet door removal is good. You might want to see the doors are wrapped in old sheets or clean paper to preserve the paint when stored for a few months.

You might consider simple folding screens for privacy. No holes to patch, easily moved around, cheap.

Interesting how very pertinent information was withheld and then slowly added as the suggestions came in....glad I didn't take a lot of time with research and pictures and then discover this is a strictly a temporary arrangement while waiting for a new build. A couple of months?

Bluenan- ouch. I'm new to this and didn't know the rules. I'm sorry you feel like your time was wasted. I know how frustrating that feels. I assure you, I sincerely appreciate any time/energy/attention anyone spends on me and my children.

For example, I never would have thought of the privacy screen idea from the previous post and I'll construct it out of the doors that I took off the closet. I'm not going to worry about protecting them - rather I'm covering them with black removable contact paper and letting the kids put glow-in-the-dark stickers on.

Although this is temporary, I want the children to feel grounded and safe. We have been moving since hurricane sandy and I try hard to create "home" wherever we are "living".

I'm putting up the beds and decor today. I'll post a pic when I'm done.

I just came across this post and cannot wait to see your end results. I saw the recommendation on the 2 sets of bunk beds (one with trundle underneath) and that would have been my recommendation. I've seen that done lots of time for ski cabins and they call it the bunk room. The other nice thing is that when you do move, if you do not need the trundle for daily sleeping, it can either be used when kids have a friend over, or you can remove the mattress and use it for extra storage.
