Does this coffee table work here?

What do you think of this coffee table? Do you like it in this room? If you don't like it, what would you suggest - different color? size? style?
Your help is really appreciated!

Great suggestion vincaminor! Schooch the sofa out a bit, with the front legs of the sofa on the rug. Good start sunsmile! The bottom slats of the current coffee table doesn't quite work with the rug. Curves would look best. This coffee table matches the chair legs and mimics the curves in the FP screen and some of the rug curves.

Thanks Vincaminor and Darzy, great suggestions! I got really excited about the adler oval coffee table that Darzy posted, but unfortunately it has a weird geometric pattern on the top (from a different view on Ethan Allen website) that I don't like.
    Any other feedback? Thank you!
Here are some more pictures from different angles:

The table is a little bit small, you could easily go with a double that size, do you have another one just like it?:) to double up? Look into changing the glass on top to a back painted brown or white.
I think the table you have is too casual and small for the room. I would look for a table that also has a darker wood finish, like the legs on your chairs.

    Another option:
Do you plan to introduce a metal finish in the room through lamps or accessories? If so, a larger metal and glass coffee table could look good and show off your beautiful rug.
Agree you need a round coffee table, or an oval one, in a finish similar to the piano. Would also suggest you take advantage of the wall washing light on the piano wall and corner to put in a corner bookcase. Maybe somewhat like in this illustration - the corner one on the left and a single one on the right of the piano.

not sure if this table would be big enough, but i think it would look nice in the room.
I would also get some other throw pillows for the couch. Something with the darker brown color in your rug. A tall plant to the right of the piano by sliding glass doors.
Hmm...well the table is more rustic and your style seems a little more modern, like your furniture. Try something more modern maybe? :)
Agree with everyone - it doesn't match and it's too small. What about a large round ottoman with some button tufts? You also need a plant or something in the corner, beside the piano. It looks empty there.

I like the suggestion of an oval shaped coffee table and a glass top. Here's one at crate and barrel that looks like it would fit nicely.

I'd like to see a small side table between the chairs, for convenience. Currently, there's no place to rest a beverage while seated in the chairs. You might also consider one to the left of the sofa topped with a simple ceramic lamp.

I think your sofa wall would benefit from a larger scale art piece to introduce just a bit of color to the neutral palette. Here's one by Etsy artist Keely Finnegan as an example.

I'd also think about beefing up the piano wall a bit. Perhaps a small gallery treatment would work for you there. And if lighting is good, a tall healthy plant would be great near the sliders.

Hi, Sunsmile! We agree that an oval coffee table ( http://www.atgstores.com/oval-coffee-tables_1021.html?&option0=optionA=137985|12340~Valu) in a mod or transitional style would work very well and like many of the suggestions already out there. The link above will take you to hundreds of oval coffee tables, although we've selected a few fun ones we thought would give you more ideas. We hope this helps and wish you luck!

Here's a little more info. I got that table at Ethan Allen, and they only allow exchanges (no returns). When it got to my house, I immediately didn't like it, even though I really liked it in the store :(
So now I'm stuck with Ethan Allen for a new table. There weren't too many oval options, I didn't see anything oval in the store that caught my attention. I will go back and look again, focusing on oval.

Here's the table that I was considering getting instead of the current one: http://www.ethanallen.com/product?productId=5114000&categoryId=8019
It's a large rectangular table, and it has a better color match for the piano and it's more formal. However, I'm hesitant about the size, it's quite large. We've never had such large coffee tables before, and I'm afraid it will take up too my space and be too big and dominant.

I cut out the size of the potential new table from the newspaper. Here's the photo - the newspaper is the larger table size. What do you think about the size? Is it worth exchanging for this one? Should I keep looking?
I think you should buy a new coffee table somewhere else, if ethan allen doesn't have what you want...and exchange your coffee table for another piece of furniture for the room, or for another room entirely. I would check out their lamps too and see if they have anything you may like for that room. I would imagine you can exchange the table for anything in the store. :)

How about an oval tufted ottoman? Bring your furniture in to rest on the edges of the rug. Elegant but comfy
  • 13 years ago
Think you need a very large round glass one to group the furniture around. Right now neither of the two chairs have a table to sit a drink down on.

I suggest you pull the rug back some so that the two front feet sit on it. Then bring chairs in also.

Pcmom1 is right, your chairs are too far.I dont like that last rectangular table that you suggested but I found some nice round ones on Ethan Allen web site.I hope they are big enough for your room.Your room is very nice only coffee table ruins the look.
The chairs are right next to the fireplace, and I was thinking of using the fireplace surface instead of a coffee table for a place to put drinks... and leave the space for people to walk between chairs and coffee table (I have small kids) - see this pic:

Is this Ethan Allen too contemporary for you? I like the color with the fireplace and the fact it has two additional tables you can pull out for the two chairs.

Rather than moving your chairs back try moving your rug. It needs to go about 6" under the sofa. What you ultimately want is for the coffee table to be centered on the rug. The chairs can be moved in closer to it...or they can be turned so they each face the coffee table and the fireplace can be seen if you are sitting in them. See photos for example.

There should be 8" from the coffee table to the sofa and 18" from the coffee table to the chairs. That gives enough room to walk btween the pieces comfortably and people can converse comfortably as well as reach the table to sit a drink on.

The coffee table you posted the link for will not look good at all. I am not sure which Ethan Allen coffee table you purchased but this one is perfect for your space: http://www.ethanallen.com/product?productId=1011&categoryId=8105

The coffee table shouldn't match the piano. If you turn the chairs as I suggested it will create a barrier between the piano and coffee table anyway and the need for visually unity will disappear.

I can envision a few throw pillows, in the same shade of blue as you have in yor rug, in the chairs and 1 on the sofa. I can also see a large blue flower pot filled withbirch firewood turned on end or even a dark brown basket filled with birch firewood (even if you don't use the fireplace!)

Are you planning on adding drapery panels?

How about a different layout? Couch parallel to the piano wall (but moved forward a decent amount) and move the piano to where the couch is currently. Put the two chairs on the opposite side of the couch with a small table in between them. ...the style of the Ethan Allen coffee table would work well IMO, but too big...keep it simple and open in the room--especially if you have kids. No need for a coffee table right now...small side tables or even a small/thin console table in the back of the couch could work well for drinks.

janishill - I looked at that Ethan Allen oval table (Darzy suggested it earlier in the thread), but unfortunately it has a really weird pattern on the top that I don't like (it's not that prominent on Ethan Allen website, but I found another close up pic of that table that I'm also attaching below).
janishill - I moved the rug 6 inches back like you suggested and chairs a little bit forward - see pic - is it better?
standinginline - there is a very large doorway on the right and it's the only layout that works (and I tried many layouts).

Right judyg - that was my input early on. That end of the room is bare and the wall washing lighting is crying for something to highlight. Did you see the pic I posted 4 hrs ago? I thought it was feasible, at least for the corner and more colorful art over the piano would be a minimum.

Hi sunsmile..I don't like the pattern on that Ethan Allen table either..I didn't see that. Here's an Ethan Allen round, beveled glass top that is round and goes with your chair legs.

Darzy, I almost suggested that one as well. It should work nicely.
sunsmile...it looks better with the rug back, but it can go back a foot or so more. The coffee table should be centered on it and the chairs can com ein closer - like in the attached picture.

You need bigger and lower. I got a great table at macys on closeout that was like 6-800 and I got the coffee and end table for 200 delivered. Check the closeouts online. They have all styles.

The one thing I've learned about being around oriental carpets (and yours is gorgeous BTW!) is, they require a SOLID topped table. The one thing that is really breaking this up is the "glass". The last thing you need is a glass table top with your rug. I think a beautiful oval top will do beautifully. The "outside the box" option would be an AMAZING steam trunk! Or, run with the theme and look for the a Spanish inspired black wood "box" with all the moorish accents. You may want to stick with a very dark wood and allow the carvings to make their own statement! I think "inlay" would be TOO MUCH! Then accent the dark spanish wood with dark wooden bookshelf/shelves "bookending" the piano! You would have three items pulling the room together. It would say, "World Traveller". An antique (looking) globe or map on the wall (above the piano) would do well somewhere in the room. Presto chango! You have "a look"! Three pieces of funiture and a map on a wall! Not bad for a day on the web!

Everyone has made such excellent suggestions for oval coffee table options. Any of these would work beautifully and compliment your existing furniture. I also agree that the piano looks lonely on that wall.
I love the idea of built in book cases on each side but they might interfere with the sliding door.
You might consider upholstered ottomans (not too small) one placed on each side of the piano with framed prints about the size of the one over the piano on each side. Then you could put a framed mirror over the piano.
Full length curtains on the pair of sliding doors would really warm up the space. I would also paint the walls a warm mocha color found in the area rug. This would give a rich back drop to the lighter colored upholstered furnishings. Last but not least I would add a pair of small metal side tables 12" diameter next to each of the chairs.

Could you try this out and post a pic for us: pull rug under sofa some and then pull chairs WAY in towards sofa. That should create a nice spot for conversation and I am hoping would leave enough room by fireplace to reach piano.

The fireplace appears to be the focal point and I notice the structural stone elements. Perhaps you should introduce a complimentary element that matches the fireplace for a coffee table. And an accessory like a room divider folding screen would like good in the corner.
I like the idea of the trunk for your table. RH has a great looking one I think. I'll try and find a pic. You could buy 2 bookshelves from IKEA in that gray/brown color for either side of the piano. I'll find pics.
look at restoration hardware's site...great coffee tables!
and ikea for shelving maybe. If you don't want to put a bookshelf on each side, you could make a corner unit out of 2 to the left of your piano.
sunsmile. If you can't return, only exchange at Ethan Allen, how about exchaning for two bookcases and get the coffee table you really love elsewhere?
Thanks everyone so much for your replies and great ideas! I am planning to add the drapes, and also the end table and lamp in the corner. It's just right now the priority is the coffee table :)
Also, I tried putting the chairs even closer to the couch, but didn't like it - there was not much room to walk to the piano.
Yes, I think I'll end up getting lamps from Ethan Allen for the store credit and will have to get the coffee table elsewhere.
ATGStores showed some great coffee tables that I really like, but they are online only and I'd like to see them in person - the colors online can be so different from what they'll end up being in the room!
What do you think of this coffee table on the pic? (I saw it at Macy's)
I think the Macy's coffee table will go well with the wood tone of the piano.
If you don't like the chairs pulled in then try pulling the sofa in. The pathway to the piano should not be through the seating area, but around it.

What if you turned the sofa so the back is toward the piano and the chairs are directly opposite the sofa with the coffee table between them? You could put a small table between the chairs. See attached photos. Or you could put the chairs so the backs are toward teh piano and th esofa is directly across from them, etc.

When you hang drapery panels hang them as illustrated in attached photo to maximize the windows/sliding doors.

Hope to see more updates soon!

Here are the shapes of 2 potential tables cut out of newspaper. Which one do you like better?
and here are the same shapes from a different angle:
You need a coffee table with a white or colored top. it could be a color from the rug. Your rug is so busy and the room is so colorless. Then take down the little picture from over the piano and hang something that is appropriae to the large size of the wall. Add a floor lmp so the piano player can see his music. Add some fireplace accessories.
If you leave furniture in this arrangement: the oval one will be much easier to walk around to reach the back chair and the piano.

I do think you should look for a round end table for the one chair, the one further away from the piano. Not too large, about 12 to 18 inches across. It can go on the side of the chair away from the fireplace. People need surfaces.

Would love to see a pic of this: leave sofa where it is and put the two chairs at the end of the rug farthest from the piano. Then a small end table could go between them, and the traffic lane to reach the seating and piano would be along the fireplace.
