Good morning ladies!

Morning ladies! I've never heard of micaline, either. MM is right, creeser, change the hardware and light fixtures, that's easy and not too expensive. If it's the right green, can you go with a seaglass motif? Make it look kind of beachy? Add some fluffy white towels, and make it look like a spa?

If not, then I'd call Bath Fitters, or Miracle Method and have them spray everything white, it's supposed to last for about five years or so.
I think maybe micaline was the company name and not the material itself, but yes, it resembles Corain. I don't have any photos right now, but the cabinets are nice. Light fixtures are easy to change out, it's replacing the brass faucets and tub fittings as well as the trim on the shower doors, that will be a pain. Also, the cabinet knobs are single knobs with a plate in behind them. That will be an issue to find something to match the holes in a more contemporary knob as the finish must've still been tacky when he put them on. It's going to rip off that section of it. The flooring needs to be replaced, so it's fair game to any color. I tried every color in the book on the walls as I wanted to update that space for years. Right now it's a pale green, before that a pale gray, before that a chocolate brown, before that a terra cotta, before that a chocolate milk color. Who knows what else I've had up there.
bobbi, I've thought of calling Bath Fitters, but they are so expensive, that we might as well gut and replace as use them. I'm beginning to think that might be our best option.
Do y'all feel that maybe the best thing will be to just replace it all with white and call it a day? It will be expensive, but I think maybe that might be the only solution.
I think it would be cheaper to give an allowance, say $5,000 or so, to the prospective buyer and let them deal with it. Who knows? Maybe the buyer will love green and brass! Or just won't care!
Great idea olldbobbi. That allows a buyer to pursue their vision for the bath.
Thanks, MM. Creeser, with a new roof and freshly painted kitchen cabinets, I think there's enough already to catch a buyers eye. I'd go with the allowance. If I were the buyer I would be happy with that arrangement. Have the popcorn tested for asbestos before you just start scraping, ok?
MM, you would be amazed at how many people can not envision anything other than what is in front of them. That's why I wonder if it wouldn't be better to just fit everything white except for the vanity top. I think I can get granite in there for very little. Then paint the walls a pale creamy color. Very neutral.
We built the house, so no asbestos in our popcorn! :))
creeser, I would not be amazed, R has no vision whatsoever. He takes things at face value and that's that. I'm the opposite! I see things for what they could be, not necessarily for what they are.

Ok, you were in real estate. You know these things better than we do. Go with your gut!
olldbobbi, my gut is cheap. *L*
Y'all have been very helpful and I really appreciate the input. I've got a 'vision' of what needs to be done on the house and after your guidance, I went and priced replacing the shower and tub. They won't be nearly as expensive as I thought as long as I can get a regular tub to replace the corner tub we now have in there. We are going to have to replace the glass on the shower doors and I think that's where the bigger expense is going to be. They are cloudy and after reading roo's comment on glass doors being porous, I can understand now why nothing I've scrubbed and scrubbed with has worked. They have got to go. Well, off to price and ponder.... Thank you ladies!
Any time, creeser, and good luck with it!

    Where's olldroo this morning?
    Thanks!
I don't know. Maybe getting the finishing touches done on her remodeling or sleeping from exhaustion?
Frameless glass shower doors are pricey. Expect to pay around $1000.
creeser take the doors off and put up a shower curtain!

MP, I would, but it doesn't have but 2 walls without the glass. I thought of that while we lived there and I was sick and tired of that mucked up shower glass. I was so frustrated with wanting to update that house while we lived in it. That .... and gagillion steps... were what convinced me to agree to build a new house. Sister-in-law was having some of the same issues, though her's wasn't as dated as mine and had no steps. Her hubby wanted to build and she talked him instead to gut and redo their existing home. They were remodeling theirs the same time we were building ours. I found it interesting that we chose a lot of the same elements, but executed them differently. For example, the coffered ceilings. Hers are elegant white coffers and ours are rustic stained wood.
Can you build a third wall to enclose a regular sized tub? I think that's your cheapest bet... ? Come now creesy....think outside the box my love! we are houzzers!! lol
  • 13 years ago
what's the basic floor plan? Can you pencil it out and take a pic and post? Because you know you can get a deal on sink, vanity top, toilet and regular tub, that's not too outrageous. Just don't get top of the line. Make it white is what I say....everyone's right...the majority of the public can not "see" potential alternate options...or just don't want to deal with it.
Ok, that third wall idea might work. The shower is separate from the tub. We have a jetted tub in there now and a large shower. Now... looking on Lowe's just to get an idea on pricing, there is a shower.. white... that has built in seats that is probably narrower than what we have for $250. If I got that, put a wall in between the shower and the tub, then I could probably get a regular tub to fit in where I have the corner tub. Makes sense? THEN.. I could do away with the expensive glass enclosure and use a shower curtain, saving me that $1000 + for frameless. Hmmm.... I feel my holiday spirits rising!
The hard part is going to get hubby to see my vision on the bathroom. This is where he and I clash. On remodeling and what to do for resale.
Here's a drawing. Remember, scale is not my strong point.
The window is a monster 5' high with an arched top. I remember this all too well as hubby used me as ballast on the rope to haul it up while he went outside to screw it in. Back then, I only weighed 120lbs. The window was a close match and outsized me in bulk. You can fill in the blanks.
Nice bathroom! I was going to suggest doing away with the tub altogether and adding a linen closet, but since there's already two of them I guess that wouldn't work. Would a free standing tub fit in that corner? They're very popular right now.
i think this might work! Just have to ask hub the right way I guess....like put all the numbers down price-wise and ask him what he thinks. IF he wants get rid of the house asap, which I'm sure he does...for the best price of course. Gotta be competative in this market!!! you know all that!
Oh the 80's. Were there ever so many bad design/artistic choices made in one decade? Hair, homes, clothes, music... ...everything.

I am so glad we were broke for most of that decade. There was a gigantic pickled oak dining room set I wanted so badly...

Of course that means it's all poised to come back.
Rio - don't go there! No thanks, I can't think of a decade I'd want to repeat!

creeser - do the shower doors come off? Can you take them and have them sandblasted? Cheaper than buying new, I would think, and then the soap gunk won't be an issue.
    Can you sandblast glass??
They'll come off, but I think I'll still come out cheaper making another wall and using a shower curtain. The only issue is that they can't be full walls. The ceiling is a cathedral in there and while technically, it can go all the way up, if we do, it ruins the look of that cathedral running all the way down the length of the bathroom.
As for the free standing tub, I thought of that as well, but you're looking at over $1000 on up. A regular tub $350.
Now... having said all that, it just occurred to me that we could do the traditional tub and shower combo in there. I'd end up with a lot of leftover space somewhere, but it would work.
And... I just got the call from my son. He is done with his last exam. We now have our second college graduate! Woo hoo! Unemployed graduate, but he's got that degree nevertheless.
The combo is a great idea. Maybe you could find a used chair (or maybe you already have one you could use) to fill the extra space. I've always thought it was a good idea to have a place to sit in the bathroom (ha! except for the obvious, of coure!). Did you already try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser?
WooHoo is right! Congratulations to you guys, and to him. That's not an easy task. I hope he gets the job of his dreams!
Yep, tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Those things are wonderful, but it still didn't clean the shower door film. I've used a steam cleaner on it, every powder and liquid cleaner on the market, WD40, alcohol, peroxide, and any other thing I could find that didn't poison me. The doors are just ruined.
As for the chair, I had a wicker chair in there when we lived there. It's where hubby would sit to put on his socks getting dressed. I had it in front of the window by the tub. A combo would give someone a lot of room for something like that. Also!... and I just thought of this... I never had wall space for a towel bar. If I do the combo, I could put one in there!
Thanks, dear. I just hope he gets a job.. *L*
  • 13 years ago
bobbi, how do you like this? If we get that extra room by using a combo, we could do this bench/storage seat![houzz=

Woo! Fancy schmancy! I love it! In fact, I'll take that whole room! And yes towel bars are always appreciated! One more thought on the shower door, you can buy etching cream. I've done it before on a small scale, it's really easy and can be rinsed off with water once it does its thing. You might as well try it if you've tried everything else anyway!

I hope he gets a job real quick, then HE can support YOU!!!
creeser!!! I just had this seriously cool idea for your shower door! Ok, here goes. Take the door off, and turn it upside down, so it's sitting on it's top edge at a slight angle. Instead of brushing the etching paste on, pour it in a line across the "top" (which is really the bottom). Let is flow, like a waterfall would, then after it's set for the required amount of time, turn it right side up and with a rag, wipe the cream off. That should give it an interesting effect! Then follow the directions for rinsing it.

In R's bathroom, it's the bottom of the door that gets the most soap scum, so this should work!

Another school shooting. I cannot imagine the agony the parents are going through. When will enough be enough? I blame the video games, kids don't understand dead is forever. Please say a prayer for all the kids involved?
bobbi, thanks for the idea! I had thought of etching the glass and your idea is definitely something to try before replacing them. Thank you!

Re the kids.. it's breaking my heart. The young man that shot them was just 20 years old and he massacred tiny children... 5-10 year olds. It's just killing me..
creeser, me too. I'm in tears. They were just talking about the Christmas gifts already purchased for the kids that were killed. My God, what on earth was that shooter thinking. It's just too horrible.
Our kids are just not safe anywhere. I looked at the news photos of that sweet looking little school with the sign that said "visitors welcome". All those precious children...
OMG where was the shooting. How sick are some people!! I worry so much about my LA munchkins every time I read something like this. I honestly do believe video games and movies are behind it all. Of course, once again we will have everyone on their soapbox carrying on about US gun laws and all the do-gooders preaching for tighter controls and the shooter's party screaming guns don't kill people do - leave our guns alone. Like a merry-go-round they go till something else takes it's place and everything is forgotten till someone runs amok again and off they go again, still not achieving anything.

Well Roo has totally hit a brick wall. After napping for 2 1/2 hours trying to watch TV last night, I gave up and went to bed at 8.30pm and woke at 8.30 AM this morning. Honestly took me 20 minutes to get my eyes open and clear my head.
This is weird- I got the email about your comment Bobbi but it isn't showing up here. Went on line and found the story, seems the shooter's mother was a Kindy teacher there and he hit her class first. Obviously a family problem so why do they have to involve everyone else. Said on our reports that there were two brothers. Adam Lanza did the shooting and killed himself but Police ave the other brother in custody.

I must really be overtired, I just cant stop crying at the thought of those precious little lives.
Please excuse weird words, using my iPod at the moment and Apple keeps changing my text.
Remembering the fact that our post shows up on various news sights, I deleted my comments, roo. I can't stop crying or shaking! I can't get any of the info I'm looking for which is making me crazy.
Good thinking Bobbi, I just got an email from my daughter and she said she has been absolutely sick to the stomach all day and can't stop crying. She even picked Miss 6 up early from school, she had another function on, but she just couldn't leave her at school any longer. They are in what is considered a safe area so like that other school it is very open, unlike most schools that only have one entrance. Won't be long before schools will be employing security guards.

Do your teachers have to undergo security checks? Ours do, but it seems they might have to check out whole families.

More dramas here today, but I just don't feel like talking about them. What are my problems compared to what those families are going through.

I do want to say though that the cloudy glass is more caused by water alone. Soap probably doesn't help, but it is right through the glass so etching or anything else won't hide it. I think your water is a lot harder than ours too so that wouldn't help either.
roo, I hope your daughter is ok and I totally understand her picking up Mis 6 early, I would do the same thing. Our teachers have to undergo background checks as do any school volunteers/employees, complete with fingerprinting, but that could just be California, I don't know about the rest of the states.

Here's what puzzles me. The shooter had mental problems. He lived at home. All the guns he used belonged to the mother who purchased and registered them legally. Why would she do this? One of the guns was an assault rifle. Why does the average mom in the average neighborhood need an assault rifle?
Don't worry Bobbi all that has gone through my head too. Not just an average mum but a Kindy teacher even want a gun of any type. Does not compute. Then again was she scared of the son knowing his problems. But then again, aren't all guns supposed to be properly secured? In which case if she was scared of him how did he access them. They say he was mildly autistic - we have a group home next to us and one of the guys is autistic, don't know to what degree, but his violent outbursts are horrific to listen to. I guess, and hope the truth outs. Hope his girlfriend and friend are ok, they might be able to throw some light on things, but I just have a horrible feeling there will be more bodies.

We had huge coverage on the news tonight but it seems to have shocked the whole World. Methinks Obama will have egg on his face and lose credibility on the World stage if he doesn't come down hard this time.

My dd is like me - very emotional, we are hopeless together. Her one aim in life was to be a mum and she waited a long time for it so I don't think she could handle anything happening to her joeys.
Pres Obama is between a rock and a hard place. The NRA (National Rifle Association) is SO strong here. Many famous people (Charleton Heston, Ted Nugent) are strong supporters of the NRA and make it difficult for sane legislation to happen. In fact, the day after the Columbine massacre, Charleton Heston called for a huge NRA rally right there in that little town in Colorado. Yes, our forefathers guaranteed us the right to bear arms, but I don't think they knew anything about semi-automatic assault rifles at the time. If you haven't seen the movie "Bowling For Columbine", see it. It's amazing.

The massacre that hit me hard was the one at McDonald's, many years ago. My boys were of the same age as the boys that were killed that day. I kept thinking, what is more normal than a couple of kids having a burger at McDonald's? How could this happen? I'm sure your dd is thinking the same thing.

I have a feeling autism wasn't his only problem. I think it will show he may have been schitsophrenic also. Doubt I spelled that right! He drove a car; he had a relationship; he had friends. Not signs of a severely autitic person.

On a side note, R is off on Monday and is taking me to the dr for the sleeping issue. Last night I slept a total of 3 hours!!! Agh.
Our shooters party and gun mob seem to have a lot of influence too and they know how to manipulate votes that the main parties need. They were on today about their 'rights'. Heck, what about those kids' rights. As you say things have changed since our forefathers' time. Maybe this time, the age of the kids, the proximity to Christmas just might push more people against them. How could anyone in their right mind support the continuance of this sort of action. The only problem is that with Christmas being so close, nothing will happen till the new year by which time people will have calmed down and moved on with their lives. Here's hoping the anger holds.

Wish this site had spellcheck, but I read your shorthand. They said he was a loner so that is an autistic trait.

I'm so glad you are going to the docs. Just hope he/she is thorough and doesn't just toss some pills at you. Pills are a good start to get your sleep pattern back on track, you just have to be careful of them as the really good ones can be highly addictive. A lot of people say this also has to do with hormones and menopause - have you cruised the web? This is just one of many sites and has some interesting suggestions. http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/menopause/hic_menopause_and_insomnia.aspx

You don't sound depressed at all so I'm sure antidepressants aren't in order. However if the doc does recommend HRT do discuss - it does increase the risk of breast cancer considerably, to the point very few people here take it any more. Have you ever tried lavender? That can be helpful. I have a lavender spray I put on my pillow and really concentrate on inhaling it and it usually puts me out. Of course if the flushes are waking you then they have to be looked at. There is a product on the market called Promensil which is well received here but when you read up on it, the side effects don't sound too good. Have to take things on the web with a grain of salt, some don't stress dangers enough while others go overboard and cause just as many problems.
Emily says spellcheck is on its way but not a priority. And no HRT, ever! We'll see what she says, at this point sleeping pills are most welcome!

Astraea posted a problem on 11/15, I told her to repost on today's, let's watch out for it, ok?
morning ..... i was glued to the tube pretty much all day yesterday. the shooting. so so so sad. Just saw a pic of the guy finally this morn.
I was discussing the same things with J last night. Why would she own so many guns and especially with someone in the house who was mentally unsound. I thought maybe he had been collecting guns in her name after she bought the first one. It will be interesting to see why she had so many. I was of course looking up what it takes to get a gun, what the process is etc. I may have read some wrong facts, but it almost sounded like after the first set of fingerprints have been taken for applying for a gun license or whatever, it's just paperwork, a form, that you fill out and turn in. Could easily be accepted by authorities. When you live in a small town or community, it could easily be passed through. I cannot wait to find out about the whole gun situation.
And why would he go after babies and then kill himself. He should have just killed himself. Do you think it was jealousy? So weird and horrible.
Mal called me last night and said, "Okay Boo Mappin will be homeschooled!" She won't I'm sure, but I figured she would be thinking like this. I cannot imagine what those families are going through. :(

Yes, it's horrible. I don't get the whole gun bit myself. How many soccer mom's NEED a semi-automatic rifle?
