I don't know how much you are willing to try and this is just my idea, so please, take no offense. I am going off my monitor…


The room looks so dark. Rethink the window treatments.
Roll up the rug.
Remove everything else but table and chairs.
Put the leaves in the table and move it to the center of the designated dining area (right where the tissue box is.)
Hang a chandelier, sized and hung properly.
Consider repainting the fireplace wall to the same white as the rest of the walls.
Remove the mantel.
Trim around the surround.
Hang a beautiful mirror there.
I can't tell if the bathroom door is open or black. If black paint it white.

Drapes, white like the walls, and maybe, as in this picture, you could trim the panels with ribbon the color of your chairs.

I'd try putting the dining table near (or in front) of the fireplace. Then a small sofa in front of the window and "light" coffee table in the "new" living room. A small bench can separate the LR from DR and also be good to pull up to the dining table with expanded with extra guests.

I don't know how much you use your dining room, but I don't believe you will ever be successful in creating a comfortable seating arrangement by the fireplace because it has too much traffic going through it. angled fireplaces are notoriously difficult to arrange furniture around and your narrow room makes it even more difficult. Since you have counter seating in your kitchen, perhaps the dining table only sees use at night when you're not getting maximum benefit from your windows anyway.

If it were my space, I'd try flipping the dining area and the seating area. Your table looks too small as it is for the present dining room area and your area carpet too large. A circular table in front of the fireplace would be a charming dining experience and the roundness of the table would really help with its angled orientation.

Additionally, the chest is waaaay too big to sit where it is and it will obstruct traffic flow. It could act as a coffe table in the new seating area by the windows or sit against the opposite wall down by the window area. A slim console table the depth of the fireplace wall (or the demi-lune table you already own), or a narrow cabinet might be a better option for your new dining space as a side board and would allow for the placement of a mirror to reflect light, or a piece of art that relates to dining.

I would also paint out the fireplace wall back to the same colour as the other walls because this isn't really the focal point of your room and the high contrast isn't helping with light reflection or the feeling of spaciousness in this smallish room. If your really want this to be a different colour, the colour should be something that comes out of the tile and not too much darker than the other walls. As it is, the dark green seems to be overpowering the tile which is very nice, by the way.

While we're on the subject of your fireplace, the present mantel looks too small and too rustic for the clean finish stile of the fireplace, so at a minimum paint it white to match the other trim, take it off all together, or extend it to improve the proportion and then paint it the trim colour.

Your seating area will have lots of light once you add a couple of lamps to flank the settee (which I would put in front of the window. Place the two chairs (perhaps a slipper chair with no arms to keep things open) opposite the settee with a side table between them.

The key is trying out this arrangement before you shop for a single thing.

I think switching the living and dining areas would work the best for this room except for the bathroom door. How unfortunate to have it there. Keep the table in front of the stairs as far as possible from the bathroom.

I think I missed something here, sorry. I thought this was just dining room and you had a living room somewhere else in the townhouse?
